User ImageThe afternoon was muggy and damp. Heavy. The heat was like a wet blanket, covering everything and making it hard even to breathe. And the sun didn’t help much either. It was bright, high in the sky, beating down on the already lethargic creatures of the clearing. Not that there were too many out and about in the clearing; the normally fresh green grasses had started to brown and wither, making poor food for the flat toothed grass eaters. The flowers had all disappeared, making the area look more like a short grassed plain than an abundant meadow. It was even too hot for the bugs; they all seemed to be elsewhere...conjugating near the one source of relief. The river. Well more of a stream really, since the water had mostly dried up, but it was water nonetheless.

Even the solid Xanti was feeling the effects of the humidity, he had situated himself somewhere he would rather not be, but it was practical for the heat. He was near the river. It had taken him some mental coaxing to get close with his aversion to water, but he had finally managed it. He was lying not five feet from the murky liquid. In the mud. Cooled. And with a small deer right next to him. Although he had already eaten much of his fill, he still kept it close. It hadn’t been reduced down to bones quite yet and it gave him something to do.

Xanti looked a mess but he was fairly content. He had rolled over once or twice in the mud and no longer reassembled anything other than a monster. Mud had dried to his leathery hide, got stuck to his mane and it still engulfed him up to his sides, since he was lying down. Dragging his recent kill had also made a mess, splattering blood everywhere and attracting plenty of flies. But he was happy, as happy as one could be on a hot day like today, gnawing on one of the deer’s leg bones and occasionally snapping at the annoying flies.

A young, small unikalona mare made her way towards the river to relieve herself of the heat. Her mane clung to her neck and her leathery wings tucked at her sides. She sighed softly as she approached the murky river and allowed only her front hooves to enter the water. The feeling cooled her off only slightly. Her pupil-less eyes scanned the area quickly then she lowered her head and placed her muzzle in the water.

As she lifted her head out of the water, the scent of blood filled her muzzle. Her ears flicked back and forth as she lifted her head a little higher to find the source. Her kalona blood began to pump through her veins quickly as she looked around. Any blood thirsty creature would be going wild at the scent. The mare shook her head. She wasn't blood thirsty... she wouldn't allow herself to be blood thirsty, but she wouldn't mind having a peek at the carcass in question.

Xan was wallowing in the mud. After chewing the leg bone off, he had swallowed it. Then proceeded to heave it up once it got caught in the back of his throat. After he had dislodged the offending object he resumed gnawing on it, being careful not to swallow it this time. The carcass was still next to him. Its smell of blood and iron bathing the area and dampening all the other scents that drifted on the feeble wind. Xan wasn’t perturbed by this at all. In fact, he preferred the smell over any other. It told him that he wouldn’t go hungry. But it did numb the nose somewhat.

As compensation, Xan had his ears working double time. Swivelling around, trying to track every little sound. From the flies, to the water lapping against its banks, to the sound of hooves moving through mud.

Wait What?

Xan jerked his head in the direction of the disturbing sound, and was a bit surprised to see a bloody unikalona mare some distance away. She appeared to be coming closer. She looked small, definitely not the size of any of the Kalonas he had yet encountered. Easy prey if he was interested in more meat, which wasn’t too likely at the moment. Xan was comfortable. So comfortable that he didn’t even bother to rise from where he lay. He didn’t even know if she knew he was here.

He resumed masticating the leg bone, watching her as he did.

Morana's steps were light and delicate as she let her cloven hooves dig into the mud. With each step, the sound of the mud squishing under her hoof filled the air. Her ears flicked back and forth as she tried to ignore the sound and continued to follow the scent. She looked past a group of trees and noticed a large, leathery looking creature laying in a puddle of mud. As she continued to approach the scent of blood, she noticed the creature had blood splattered on him with a mixture of mud. He was a disgusting looking creature.

Morana held her head high, her white fur tainted with the splatters of blood and bits of mud on her once pure white hooves. She frowned as she stared at the carcass. Her spaded tail lashed back and forth as she tried to ignore the craving for blood.

As the stallion stared at her, Morana watched him closely. Her pupil-less eyes holding little to no emotion in them as she stared. She shuffled her wings as she glanced at the carcass he had once more then smiled at the stallion suddenly. It seemed as though her whole disposition changed and she was suddenly a happy, loving mare. She broke the silence with a child like question, "What have you got there?" Her voice was almost child like itself and rather angelic, an oxymoron to her appearance.

Xanti watched as the mare approached. She looked so out of place with her head held high. Her bearing, so proper, made her seem regal almost, like she didn't even notice the filth that stained her crystal white coat. Like she didn't even notice the blood and gore her delicate hooves trod through ...and somehow that disturbed him.

It seemed like an act, fake. He had noted her few glances at his kill. Had noted her tail lashing. Had noted the coldness in her movements...and he was starting to feel weary about this little unikalona. She was trying so hard to ignore her surrounding's that Xanti didn't know whether she was just oblivious or if she was trying to lure him into a false sense of security.

"What have you got there?"

Her voice. It was high, and soft, like a foals'. It instantly raised Xanti's hackles and brought a throaty growl to his lips. She was definitely putting on a show. There was no doubt in his mind.

"Why do you want to know?" His gruff, growl tinged words were laced with violence. Yet, he didn't rise out of his muddy burrow.

Morana watched the stallion's movements closely. Obviously, he was not one to trust many others. Her tail again started lashing wildly as she looked down at the large stallion. Her white ears flicked forward then back towards her skull as she snarled at him suddenly. She was not one to be scared off by a pathetic growl.

The young unikalona, with little experience under her hooves, stepped forward once more. He had a pretty tough bark, but how hard was his bite? It couldn't be too bad, considering he refused to leave the disgusting mud he wallowed in. What a lazy and worthless stallion, or so she thought.

Morana couldn't help but shake her head slowly at his question. "It was a simple question, stallion." Her voice was sharp now as she seemed to grow irritable with the stallion.
