I'm pretty new to Buddhism, and I was wondering what should go on an altar and what I should actually do with it. Does it just sit? Do I meditate in front of it? Thanks.

I think altars are there to remind you of your path. You don't have to do anything with it, you don't even have to have one. But you can do anything you want with it such as pray, meditate, contemplate, etc.

well, i have noticed that the use of Altars is universal among Spiritual Faiths. smile the way i see it, an Altar is your Spiritual Workplace, your secret place to commune, or just some kind of personal Symbol, depending on your prefference.
there are many different ways to use an Altar. assuming that you are the typical Buddhist who does not believe in any gods or such, just decorating it with mood-enhancing imagery, lighting some incense, and meditating in front of it is fine. ^_^ if you perform any kind of rituals, like offerings or meditative physical practices (i believe there was some kind of Buddhist practice in which you trace coloured sand in certain ways?) then that is fine too.
if you don't feel comfortable with th euse of an Altar, you don't need to have one either. after all, it's a PERSONAL thing, and therefore whether or not you have one is also personal. it's your own business. smile
personally, i use mine for Rituals, Spellcraft, and Spirit/God communion. but i am not nessesarilly Buddhist (or any religion actually), i am a Shaman.
