In the Gotei 13 the 10 strongest members of each squad are given rank according to their abilities, with first seat being captain, second being the lieutenant, tenth seat being the lowest ranked position, and all members below seat ten are not seated, that is they are without rank and are merely the rank and file mass members of the squad. Additionally the third seat is given the title of assistant-lieutenant and functions in much the same way to the lieutenant as the lieutenant himself does to the captain.
