The night air was chilly; but, then again, it almost always was, now-a-days. Even the stars shone differently than they did those many years ago.

A cloaked man, drew his inky cloth tighter around himself. He could sense change, something was going to happen soon. "Or already is..." he amended, quitely. Stepping from his perch, he began to walk down the hill and was swallowed by the darkness.

It is the year 2050 and the earth has changed so much. It started long ago, so long ago, that even if someone had known, and tried to stop it, it wouldn't have happened.

Demons and monsters now roam about, tearing things apart, feasting on the dwindling human race as though they were livestock. They were not they only things slowly wiping out the human race; plagues and diseases flowed through town, ceaslessly destroying and killing.

And...well, the apocolipse thrity years back didn't help any.

Was that the start? you ask. The apoclipse? No, many people think so, but it not true. The start was about 10 years before...and even that might be skewed. No one remembers anymore and those that do...have been dissapearing.

Well, why worry about the past; the future is here and demands a payment...so lets go along, shall we?

Why thank you!

I stare up, through the darkness, at the ceiling. Or perhaps it was the wall. I don't know anymore. The dark has filled my eyes so much so, that I don't know where anything is.

I sit up and rub at my eyes; I've probably smearing dust and muck all over my face, now. How long has it been since I've been down here? Hours? Days? Weeks?

Time is no longer even an awareness for me.

Standing up, wobbling slightly, I blindly stumble around trying to find the stairs. It was hard work, things were scattered everywhere. Eventually, my feet found the stairs, shortly followed by the rest of my body.

"Ouch..." I mutter, pushing up with my hands. "Aaah..." I cry softly, hot tears splashing down onto my hands, leaving invisable trails through the dirt and grim. Crawling up the stairs, I push against the door, calling out, "Ma! Ma! Please let me out now!"

There was no answer; nothing. Using the door, I get tp my feet and open it. My surprise came when it opened, but only about 10 inches. "Ah..." it was dark out there too, and no sounds, but a very peculiar smell was out there.

"Mama! Papa!" I call out, expecting them to peek over, smile and let me out. Again, no one. Craning my head, I see that a chair has been propped against the door. Twisting, I reach out with my right arm and make contact with the chair.

With a clatter, it goes to the floor and the door swings freely open....

"Mama...papa...where are you?" I call out; the silence is deafening and nothing seems to be moving. Looking at the floor, I find myself startled at the thin layer of dust that was settled on the floor.

Confused, I slowly make way to the living room, and it's the same here, too. Nobody around, no noise, nothing. "H-hello...?" I call tentitivly. Slowly, I open the front door.

"...no...." comes a whispered voice I don't recognize as my own. I go to my knees, staring at the sight before me.

Houses that I knew, place and other buildings, were smoldering...the fire that had been there, long since gone. Now I knew the smell that was floating on the air. Burnt flesh; human flesh. Now I understood...what didn't burn was either eaten by monsters, or slowly killed by a plague.

"Mama! Papa! Don't leave me here! Come back!" I know it's useless, but can such a such a young person like me do. I cry hot tears and call out again and again only to recieve no answer.

It seemed like hours passed, but I eventually got back onto my feet and returned into the house. No longer was this to be my home; it was time to leave and go elsewhere.

"But where...?" I muttered; I didn't know the outlaying lands, or even what the next village was. I did, however, know that somewhere in the house was a map.

All that was needed now, was to find it, get some food and water and leave. Pulling a chair over to the far wall in the living room, I stand on it, to get a shelf.

The chair was wobbley, not well made, but it held my weight as stood onto my tip toes and pated the shelf. I found the map and pulled it down; jumping from the chair, I returned to the kitchen and spread the large paper out.

"Um...mama and papa never really told me how to use this...but, I think I gotta go here..." I said to myself, tracing with a finger a path from my village to a larger town.

With a nod, I fold the map up, shove it, along with food and water, into a bag, and head out the door for the last time.
