The shop was pretty quiet today. Odyssey had taken to dusting off the shelves while Humfrey Two set to reorganizing the backroom, but grudgingly so.
Truth be told, he'd rather be in his favorite corner reading in one of his books rather than doing anything remotely mundane and seemingly filled with toil! Obviously both were doing busy work until their next visitor could make his way into their humble shop.
"Should be here any minute." Odyssey muttered glancing at the door as she glided past it to another shelf.
Humfrey Two made no response, but only grunted and shoved another jar onto a freshly dusted shelf.

Mako wandered the streets in a mild confusion. He didn't exactly know where he was going - not that he didn't know his intended destination. He had earlier expressed interest in Adoption, but the details perplexed him...as did the organization itself. Something about a land called...Zanth? He was a bit foggy on the details, but assumed it was a foreign adoption agency and planned on getting the rest of the details once he arrived.
How he arrived, he did not know. Objectively, he might have attributed it to coincidence and aimless wandering, but something now suggested to him that his feet hadn't found their way to this rather obscure shop. Yes, this was definitely the place - bracing himself for confusion, he headed in.
"Hello? It's me - err - Makokun...I believe you've been expecting me?" Stepping in, he scanned the shop for any signs of life, be it foreign or native.

Mid-dusting she stopped, dropped the feather duster and was in front of Makokun wearing a large welcoming smile, "Oh! You're here. I'm so glad you made it!" she sounded sincere midst all the gushing she did after he had come in, "Humfrey Two! Get the rest of his stuff ready, Mr. Makokun has arrived."
"In due time, woman!" Replied a gruff voice from the back. The voice was followed by a clatter and a series of shuffling.
Odyssey rolled her eyes but continued smiling, "Glad you made it, and I hope your travel here was just wonderful." She wasn't sure how long it took him. Various people take various amounts of time around here it seemed, "Any questions on your mind?"

Mako nearly fell back out of the doorway in surprise as Oddy appeared suddenly in front of him, but he regained his composure and returned her smile. "Ah - hello!" he replied warmly.
His attention was immediately drawn to the back of the shop as Humfrey Two's voice came echoing out from wherever he was. He hoped that wasn't the typical Xanthian accent, but couldn't help but chuckle all the same at the character it contained.
"Yes, I'm glad I made it too, almost thought I wouldn't, for a moment." Posed with a question, he stopped to think. There were numerous questions on his mind, but he didn't know where to begin. "Ummm - there was something about a tome and...magic? Sounds like an interesting culture they've got."

He certainly was nice, and if it was one thing Oddy enjoyed it was nice people, "Well, again, glad you are here. Yes the tome and magic. In Xanth everything is magic so I guess I do not make such a big deal of it. If you will follow me to the counter here.." She turned and strode over to the counter moving to get behind it. Odyssey obviously expected him to wait on the other side of the counter even if she didn't say so.
"This is not just a book not sure if I got that point across. It's actually a person turned into a book via magic and potions." Odyssey explained patiently.

Following her every word, Mako nodded to to show his vague understanding. Magic? Well, he had heard of stranger beliefs, and he was rather inclined towards anything unusual himself. He had a son at home who spent all day practicing magic in his room, in fact, but he was best left alone in his room, so Mako was not entirely sure he believed it completely. Nor was he used to dealing with it.
"Yes, of course" he said as he walked over to the counter and waited on the customer's side. "Wh-what?" he spluttered as the information hit his ears. "You...you don't mean to say that it's a - a book of memoirs, then?" His head felt light, as if all fact had just flown out of it. "An...actual person?" He was almost positive that he had misheard her, and was now making a fool of himself.

She giggled a bit and nodded, "Yes, he was once a person. He came to us to make a new life for himself, but he didn't really specify why. Though now here he is and needs someone to care for him also guide him in his new life." Odyssey spoke as she dug up some things from behind the counter and produced a tome that even now seemed to pulse and glow, but was otherwise unreactive.
"He was quite an unusual soul. Very shy and such toward me. Though he was more open and comfortable with Humfrey in Xanth." She explained, "I am guessing he got sort of rejected by a lot of girls because of his shy and bumbling demeanor as far as it came to impressing one went." Odyssey shrugged and drew up some papers, "Seemed sweet if not panicky though. He ever so desperately wanted to leave after a few moments."

Mako stared blankly for a moment before bringing his jaw up as he fell back down to earth, nearly biting his tongue in shock. "You..you mean, that book right there?" His fingers inched closer to the book, and the bookworm in him was suddenly yearning to flip through every page of that tome and discover all of its secrets. he looked up at Oddy as if for approval before contenting himself with simply resting his hand on the cover. It was very slight, but an undeniable warmth that told him that this book was more than just pages, binding, and 2 covers crept through his fingers.
"Oh...oh yes, I see what you mean" he said at once, amazed with the tome. "Ok, well...it's more than I expected...much more...but I'll be glad to look after it - err - him." With this he smiled and drew his hand away from the book reluctantly, grasping at a pen on the counter as if to sign the papers. "I do hope he'll do better here, and don't worry, I won't let him regret coming here."

Giggling lightly Odyssey gently pressed the pen into Mako's hand and pushed a paper or two toward him. Usually this step was done prior to people coming to the shop but sometimes this was unavoidable, "Don't forget to put his new name in the name slot for your child." Oddy instructed patiently.
"Humfrey Two, please bring us the journal so Mr. Mako can get home and adjust to his new addition." Odyssey chimed out afterwards.
No sooner had she spoken when a gnomish, and very grumpy looking older gentleman stomped through the doorway leading to a backroom one cannot quite see, but the smell issuing from it was pleasent enough. Nice soothing herbs and other such things.
"Keep yer pants on. I'm here." Humfrey Two grumped out as he made his appearance.

Mako took the pen in hand and looked down to read over the paper, still listening to Odyssey and nodding in reply. He had been thinking about the name for a while, and finally arrived upon a name that he liked last night. Scratching out 'Garin' on one line, he then signed and initialed where it was necessary and pushed the papers back towards Oddy.
His head inclined curiously towards the spot Humfrey had appeared, and he immediately concluded that he was indeed rightfully curious. This place got all the more interesting by the minute! "Oh!" he said simply in surprise before stifling himself, not wanting to appear rude, even if this "Humfrey" person didn't mind it.
"Hello, sir!" he said, fighting between staring and averting his eyes suspiciously. Even if this man was little, he was a lot to stare at. "Ummm - journal?" he asked, wondering for a moment if the tome before him wasn't really the book Oddy had been talking about. His heart sank - he certainly hoped he would be leaving with this tome! "Another book, eh?" he said hopefully.

Instead of allowing Humfrey Two to hand the journal straight to Makokun she plucked it out of the gnomish man's hand much to Humfrey's disapproval by the way he glared at her. She slipped the cert into the journal and handed it Mako, "Explain the journal to Mr. Mako." Oddy said to Humfrey Two.
Humfrey grunted and glared at Oddy as she stepped away so that Humfrey Two could have the spotlight for now. At first the gnomish man seemed to refuse to say anything before he suddenly spoke up, "Well it's where ye can keep records of things an' write journal entries. Be sure t'check it oft'n for various instructions and tidbits of guidance. When the journal writes somethin' at ya it means somethin' will happen if it hasn't already." Without much further explination Humfrey Two turned and walked back into the back area leaving Mako with Odyssey yet again.
"Don't mind him he's always that grumpy, anyways, any questions about the journal?"

Mako eyed the other book somewhat nervously - it certainly wasn't as interesting as the tome before him. Errr - the boy, he should say(from what he had come to believe, at least). Thankfully, Humfrey's explanation offered more relief than his stern expression. Mako doubted that happy expression coming from that face would've been incredibly relieving either, but he was happy to know that he'd be leaving with both nonetheless.
"Oh...so, is the journal magic too?" he asked, now eyeing it curiously rather than apprehensively. "Like, it records my responses and sends them to you guys? Sounds like a good system, unless you're just trying to sneak another kid out with me" he joked. "I think I understand the journal, but I'm still a little curious about the tome - err, child." Indeed, it was the child aspect that had him most curious.
"Is there anything I should know about...him?" There were almost too many questions to ask, so, of course, he chose to do the logical thing and ask them all at once in one fast breath. "Like his personality? Will he come out as a child or baby or teen or what? How will I know when it's...errr...'time?' How does he come out?" He gasped for air, hoping his flood of questions didn't disarm the cheerful girl.

Odyssey nodded a little wearing a smile, "Oh, no, we'd never sneak another child on you. Unless you wanted it." Her smile turned into a grin which was followed by a wink, "The journal also will let you know when we have the antidote and stuff ready for your little one, and thus prompting you to come to us once you collected the items deemed needed for the change over." She added to his conclusion.
She shrugs a bit, "He will come out as a baby, they usually do. They don't usually start off above the toddler or baby stages. As far as his personality goes, we do not know how he will turn out. That would depend on you and your parental skills. You may end up learning a lot from eachother in the end." Odyssey chuckled, "You'll do fine, sir. Is that all you needed?"

Mako chuckled as Oddy reassured him in her quirky, addictive manner. "Well, I'll just be taking the one for now, then" he replied, also sporting a grin. "Ah, alright, so it'll just...appear in the pages, then?" he asked, wondering whether he had completely grasped the concept. "Alright, that sounds quite useful" he added, not completely sure why they couldn't just use the phone - ah well, to each their own. He supposed that these were the customs of the land, and he was all too happy to follow them - it'd be nice to give his son background on his heritage.
"Ah, a baby? He...wasn't a baby before, was he?" He'd hate to think that they just went around kidnapping babies and turning them into inanimate objects for some odd means of profit. "Well, I'll do my best - I'm certain he'll teach me quite a few new things, if he's as magic as the rest of what I've heard about is!" The task of raising a magical baby seemed quite daunting, actually, but he was certainly not going to back out now. It'd simply make things more interesting, really. "Ah, I guess...any pointers for me? About raising a - errr, magical son, I mean..."

She shrugged and nodded in response to question about the journal, "Something about the Gaian air seems to do that to our journals. They weren't originally able to do that, but we find it to be very useful." Odyssey explained.
Odyssey just laughed a bit and shook her head, "Don't be silly, he was a full grown man when he came to us." She wrinkled her nose and chuckled again as she listened to his continuing statements, "I am sure you'll do fine, and as far as pointers go, don't let him be ashamed of his talents and encourage him to further his skills. Basically it's like any other child, you nurture them. As far as item care goes, be careful to not let the book come into arm. Harm to the book could have some consequences that we can't quite promise will be good for either of you." The warning tone seemed out of place in her voice.
