In a time of swords and magic...
100 years ago; The Black Tower, birthplace of all necromantic energy, shot out a shock wave of necromantic energy. This shock wave changed the world. Effected by the evil energies, the wildlife changed. Animals turned into monsters and corpses turned into zombies and liches. Even the roads are dangerous to travel on to the unprepared adventurer.
People fled the cities and took shelter in castles and fortresses. They started training their people how to fight, cast magic and heal so that they could fight back against the Black Tower. Some humans instead were called to the evil energies, becoming cultists. Which became outcasts among their own peoples.

The shock wave was caused from a master necromancer, trying to do what no one had done in 300 years. Use the black tower... The black tower, birthplace of all evil magics, could be used to give oneself demonic power beyond all mortal means. However, just before he could finish, a young warrior destroyed the Dark Crystal causing the black tower to be broken, releasing the evil magic into the world. The only way to fix the problem is to fix the old crystal and draw the magic back into it. However, the closer adventurers go to the tower, the stronger the monsters and undead there...
