Quote: Because more often than not, we are all Closet Singaporeans at Heart.
Okay, so we have a thread about what we dislike about our country. We have negative articles on the papers every other day. Your friends around you keep lamenting things could get better. You openly declared if you are rich enough, you would migrate to another awesome city. National Service is driving you crazy.
And we have Complain about Everything stomp.com.
Yes, we all have a thousand and one thing to complain about imperfect Singapore. Yet, which country do not? Before we set up to start saying the grass are definitely greener on the other side - researches have shown that people who complains the most are people who have the luxury to do so.
We have the privilege to complain, but it is now time to look at the factors that gave us the time and rights to do so. To search deep in your heart and say: Actually, Singapore is where I truely belong!
Enter: 1. Before NATIONAL DAY ENDS, every member of the Singapore Guild can join this competition to name 10 things they absolutely love about Singapore (no more no less). It could be anything!
2. Then, I would go through the lists, and pick the one I love the most, and presents it with a gift.
3. So, put some heart and sincerity to it. The more you describe each love, the more it persuades me to agree.
4. What more! You could earn something while showing your Love! The prizes will be unknown since you should not do this for the rewards. But I know Singaporeans from inside out... Soooo, some tidbits: The 1st prize is currently estimated at around 100,000G++. The next top ten may recieve 10,000G - 20,000G each. You may opt for cash if the prize is not to your liking. If the results are awesome, I may push for a secret 1st prize for a whooping 5,000,000G++ reward (although you can't opt for cash in that case). The prize will be Singapore related.

1. Friends and family are within a 2 hr travel radius even if they are at the other end of the country. 2. The nearest good makan place is 50 meters away. 3. On the topic of food, we get practically every kind of cuisine we could imagine. And done really well. 4. Connectivity. There's almost no such thing as being out of communication range. 5. How difficult it is to get hopelessly lost even if you don't have gps and don't ask for directions. You just walk straight along the road and you get a taxi or the next bus stop. 6. How I actually start missing home if I stay out of the country for awhile. 7. Shopping. Alot of shopping, open 24-7. 8. Streets are clean, and nobody's sleeping on it. 9. Efficiency. 10. I can walk out to 7-11 at 3am and not be afraid of being kidnapped. (... Not that I'm a kid anymore. D; )

Woops. Sorry for the long delay. Was kind of busy in life... sweatdrop Sooo, before I announce the winner, I am going to bore you guys with my version of 10 things I absolutely <3 about Singapore!
Go!!!
10)Those be-damned complainers: So, it is a love-hate relationship, maybe more on the hatred side, but sometimes, they are just purely entertaining. Don't you see the irony of Singaporean complaining how we are always complaining about everything? So much as that we are often stereotyped, by ourselves, to be Complain Kings and Queens.
Like how people are lamenting about Orchard's rain puddle?
I was eavesdropping a nearby conversation recently about Orchard's misfortune. The conversation was purely driven by whose mistakes it was, and that how incapable those people are for letting it happen. And how Singapore always claim we are flood free.
In retaliation, as I was reading the paper, I commented to my friend out loud on the China's flood which took the lives of 1,000 of people and were still counting. "Now that is what I call a flood!"
If only I can share with you the pictures of their faces, and the victorious long silent of their own embarrassment.
Now guys, researches have shown that only people living in great conditions has the luxury to complain. The better their lives are, the more they complain. So next time, before you open your mouth to blame, remember that your rights to complain is what our dear country have given us, painstakingly thoughout history.
The tenth thing I truely love about Singapore is actually my given luxury to complain.
9)Pasir Ris: I stay here, and I absolutely love it here. In fact, I will never ever move away if I can help it. Even if some 2012's End of the World Flood is rumoured to eat away such low-lying town first.
It is a small quiet town, with its own flair and attractions, that brings some life around from time to time.
First and foremost, it is at the edge of Singapore, which means there will always be seats in the MRT when i board it there. xd
Next, face it, we may be the second biggest beach in Singapore, after East Coast Park, but does ECP have a mangrove swamp? Does ECP have an amazing large playground? Does ECP have ponies rides? Does ECP have so many chalet lining the shore that almost every single Birthday Celebrations seem to somehow end up in Pasir Ris?
Remember one of the first theme park in Singapore? Sure it does not have the scale and grandeur of Universal Studio Singapore, but ten years before, we only have Escape Theme Park to fulfill our young hearts. As it now stay forgotten in this small town, Escape was the memories and love of many young souls, that can never be replaced. Like, where was the first place you tried go-karting?
Then we have E-Hub, a shopping mall with a smaller Singapore Flyer? However, how many towns and cities in Singapore have a Ferris Wheel? How many in the world? Not many, I reckon~
And and, Pasir Ris Town Park! With gigantic fishing pond, a nice view, and a small pub at the side for some late night gathering for a mug of hoegaarden and a slice of those amazing amazing Milan Magnus Pizza~ Better than Pizza Hut!
cool Home: Whenever I am feeling low, I look around and I know~ No matter how you like pop, rock or heaviest metal; Even if it isn't sang by Lady Gaga, Jay Chou or Justin Bieber; there is a place deep within our heart that is reserved for Kit Chan - Home.
Home was the first series of annual songs commissioned for Singapore National Day Parade Song, which was sang again in 2004, and recently in 2010. Its awesomeness can hardly be forgotten that just once I heard it, I fell in love with it, learnt it, and still be able to remember the lyrics some 12 years later.
It resonates with me so much that, wherever I am, I will never be alone, for this is where I know I am home~
7)Transportation: I am so so so so so glad I never have to spend more than 2 hours sitting my a** off in a train or car to get from one point to another point. Even if the said point is at the other end of Singapore.
Our transportation system, while not perfect (I am still waiting for a Pasir Ris to Town then to Jurong Express Train), is extremely lovable. Sure that that is only because Singapore is small, but you still have to give them credits because transportation in Singapore is just something I extremely love however the reasons is.
The network, and the continous effort to better the experience, with the new circle line, all those underground shopping malls and LRT, and Taxi, and Buses (when I want to take my own sweet time). Transportation in Singapore, is da seventh place~
6)Singa the Courtesy Lion: Now, most of you would never thought about that, but Singa has a very special place in my heart. It appeared in my childhood, teaching us that courtesy is very important. Imagine the pain and horror to have it disappear after the Courtesy Campaign ran for ten years.
While it still exist in certain part of Singapore, I thought that Singa and his family was doom to slowly vanish into thin air.
So imagined my happiness when it appeared again inside our NDP2010 tote bag?
I hope youngster today will learn more about Singa and his family of kind, friendly and courteous Lions. For if Lions can do it, so can you~
Better and cuter than taking that extra mile~ xd
5)Singlish: So, everyone is talking about how bad our English are. Okay, I am guilty of that. However, can we PLEASE just enjoy our infamous language for a our informal conversation!!!>???
America decided to have their own version of English, so why can't we have it too? We can still follow the Queen's English during formal events. However, we should popularized Singlish as our informal language!
It takes skill to speak it! "What lar?", "What leh?" and "What sia?" all are used and meant differently! There is a deep study and rules to apply in Singlish, it is not just gibberish that everyones try to put together in string of different languages.
It is truely and uniquely Singapore~
4)Food Heaven: Recently, I had I conversation with an overseas friend since I often hear Singaporeans lamenting about how there is a lack of place to go or do.
So I asked, "What do you usually do?"
"Oh, we watch movies. Go to the beach. Drive around."
Watch Movies, check. Go to the Beach, Check. Drive Around... Check. Sure we don't have states to drive around for, but here, there is a hell lot of little place to drive to.
A hell lot of delicious little places...
Buffalo Wings at Youth Flying Club, Milan Magnus Pizza at Pasir Ris Town Park, Scenic Bottle Tree Restaurant, Satay Beehoon at East Coast Park, Prata at Upper Thompson Road, Tea at Haji Lane, Nasi Lemak at Changi Village, Holland Village, GEYLANG, Dempsey Hill, Bedok, ETC ETC!!!
I can list a list of place to go to and eat. But that takes out all the fun of you exploring and searching for it~ Face it, Singapore is going to be one of the only few place on Earth where you can eat so many delicacies from so many different cultures, just a short drive from your home.
For the older crowd, there is just a ton of place to go for a good and enjoyable drinking session. Bar Hopping has never been more enjoyable anywhere else~
3)Racial Harmony: Or tolerance. Singapore has some bad bad history on Racial discord. To spare you the history lesson, let just say it ends up pretty sad.
Therefore, our forefathers promised themselves to never again repeat the mistakes, and remember the scars it left us. Thus we placed inter-racial respect into the very heart of the vision for Singaporeans.
We however, seem to take it for granted. It takes alot to set aside differences, and I am often guilty of trailing off into chinese at times (of course not on purpose) when in a group inclusive of other-races. It takes greatness in oneself to able to accomodate another so different from us.
However, despite the differences in our skin-colour, languages and beliefs, we are all, at our core: Humans. I begin to learn to accept and learn from other cultures, and BOY! they do have very interesting cultures and beliefs should you ever approach it with an open heart.
Multi-cultural and races make Singapore the more unique and special. We learn to develop tolerance and respect for each other, which better ourselves, and broaden our horizon.
Not many place on Earth that offers such chances~
2)Security: Something we always took it for granted. Sure, there is too many fines, too harsh sometimes, too many police lurking in the corners whenever you play void-deck soccer... However, we all know that it takes alot and alot of unseen hard work to deter crimes and terrorism to happen in our small peaceful island.
Name me a country out there that is as safe as Singapore, I say: probably just a handful~
I rather be here, than almost anywhere else. 'Nuff said.
1)The Little Red Dot: Nothing spell more "I-N Y-O-U-R F-A-C-E" than this LITTLE RED DOT does because, Singapore was not exactly something everyone was looking at 50 years ago. Even our own colonial master did not think we could make it.
In year 1979, our first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew said during the National Speech that, "A faint hearted people would have given up long ago. We never gave in, never mind giving up. For that alone, we deserve to succeed. If we press on, in twenty years we shall build a great metropolis, worthy of a hardy, resilient and stout-hearted people."
Guess where were we in 1989? I WAS BORN! -cough- Fast forward abit more, and now you see Singapore, on the World Map. Hosted First Youth Olympic, First Night-Street Formula 1 race, in Pirates of the Carribean, extorted by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association. Singapore is one of the most famous in relative to land mass country in the world (the other being the Vatican City, but they cheated with their centuries of history).
And how many countries can boast going from 3rd World to 1st World in a period of merely three decades?
To be fourth World Leading Financial centre, after the likes of London, New York and Hong Kong? Second most densely populated nation in the world after Monaco? Was the most globalized country? 11th in Quality of Life index? One of the best Ports and Airports in the World?
Some many years ago, nobody thought that Singapore will make it, and our forefathers had done and endured alot to create what we have today. While we take things for granted everyday, and complain and throw tantrum around, and would rather migrate.
Remember, it was the hardwork and foresight of our forefathers. Their determination and dedication that make Singapore what we are today. That we can stand proudly in the face of others.
Remember, we inherit this country from our ancestors, who fought tooth and nail for our future. It will be entirely our fault should the nation fail. Because the government does not make a nation, nor its history, it is the people... You and Me.

As for the winner....: AngelxDevil's rendition of her ten favourite things about Singapore.
To be fair, it was really a tough choice.
I liked
Mystix's Reason for loving National Day, Red and White is really beautiful to put together.
Tidesong's freedom of beliefs.
Kiri's facts about a good makan place is really only 50 meters away (unless you live in some richman landed property area).
However, it is ultimately AngelxDevil's humor when putting the point across. Not just about our multi-cultural jokes.
It is just really really hard to get lost in Singapore.
---
And since I haven't had time to buy the prizes and stuff, I share dish out monetary values~
100,000G for AngelxDevil.
40,000G Mystix, Tidesong and Kiri
10,000G for the rest of the 3 for you~ ^^
Meanwhile I will really need some sleep. I will send all the trades the next time I come online. Which should be soon enough, at least by this weekend.
Don't worry, I will keep to my words. ;D

Yarrr didn't thank Silvern yet too smile smile So thanks!!! And great thread too!
Singapore is what it is today because people, like real people in this very forum and most of their parents and grandparents contributed to building Singapore.
In a sense ya, its good that people are at least complaining. Hopefully one day they (and me... lol) will mature and give constructive criticism and then step in to volunteer results. Singapore is only as loveable as the people living in it are smile
