This is something I can't seem to stop asking myself, & it seems some of my MTG playin' friends have a similar problem. - How many decks should I have? - There's always a level of personal preference, some are fine with 1 or 2, but for others its 5, 8, 10+ decks. So, what is a good formula for the amount of decks?
I'd think, it would break down into a formula based on factors about player;
1.) How many cards does the person own? (200-50,000)
2.) How many rares/uncommons/staple cards does the person own?
3.) What is that persons play style? (Timmy, Johnny, Spike)
4.) What is that persons preferred format? (T1, 1.5, 2, Ex., Casual, etc.)
5.) What is that persons preferred color/type? (the MTG quiz)
6.) How much variety does the person prefer?
The list can go on and on, & it just gets more and more complicated; So over-thinking it's out, but there's still something to be said about these listed aspects, but then it just comes back to the first question; How many decks should I have?

I have about: 18,000+/-cards.
I have about: 800+/- rares.
I have about: 1,600+/- uncommons/staple cards.

My preferred format is: Casual
My favorite color/type is: Black/Hate
I prefer: More variety
Seriously neutral I have 11 decks, 2 of each of the main colors & 1 multicolor (white black). I can't get over the urge/want to build or re-build whenever i look at my magic cards anymore. I'm not sure if it stems from being unhappy with some of my decks or from the inability to create more from personal limits on the number of decks I've allowed myself.
I've often thought to myself, what about say, 1 of each, but then i go 'oh, but i like both of my black decks' - & my OCD won't let me have an uneven amount of decks anymore (i used to have 5 black decks, no blue, 1 green, etc.) *bangs head against wall*

I was told a million times of all the people in my way I have about: 12,000+ cards. I have about: a bunch rares. I have about: enough uncommons/staple cards. I am a: Johnny My preferred format is: standard My favorite color/type is: white I prefer: fun set ups and combos. I have only one deck right now, but it's actually an evolution of my first deck. I started out with white soldiers. Through the months since I picked up the game it's taken a unique road to what it is now. When Zendikar came in and lowyrn and shadowmoore rotated out, I made the bold leap to branching into other colors. My friend suggested red because I played aggressively, so I tried it out. I had a lot of fun playing red, but the decks I built always felt like they were missing something. Because of the strategies I'd always come up short in one way or another, and I gotta admit, the learning experience was awesome. Eventually against my friend's advice I started experimenting with 3 colors, trying to figure out red white and blue together. I was on and off it for a few months because of how little actual guidance I got from it. My friends would rather see me build a deck that wins more than a deck that would help me learn the specifics of the game. Eventually I went back to one color until I got an impulsive hair in my a**. At the pre-release for RoE I played Red, white, and Black. I loved it. I did so bad I ended up placing second to last but I had fun with it. So it inspired me to make my main deck 3 colors. I did a lot of tests with synergy, and eventually I came up with the deck I have now, which I'm retiring when Alara rotates out. My next deck in production is a naya enchantment deck that I'm gonna try and play at least one or two fnm's with, but mostly use for casual play. I have no idea what's gonna start me off for Mirrodin, and I'm trying to keep it open until they leak spoilers, so hopefully by October I'll only have 2 complete decks and 1 mirrodin deck in construction. how I had to keep on trying and get better ev'ry day

Well Most of my cards just stack up and gather dust after the set cycles out, I can't bring myself to Throw them away or sell them for too low of a price. I try to keep a playset of Every card (including the arts soo like 4 m10 Lbolts, and 4 revised Lbolts) They are all ordered properly and what not. I havn't played any M11 because i have been tryingto save money and wait till scars comes out to make a actual standard deck.
Anyways as for decks. well you can't ever have too many. I have three EDH decks that are finished and 2 that are in the works (i like having the abbility to play star edh with everyone). I have one mill deck. I try to only have ONE standard deck that I play with, and I have most of the top standard decks built in order to play test with friends and what not.
I dont play too much extended or vintage competitively, but i have some decks just built. I have five "biginner decks" decks that I use to teach new players (common abbilities that are the basics and no combos, no synergy) I find that way the easiest to teach people or else they ONLY forcus on the combo.
Honestly I need to jst do some cleaning and get rid of a lot of my cards. I don't think it is the number of Decks that is the problem, but the number of unplayable cards there are that just sit around in our houses

I have about: 2,000 +/- uncommons/staple cards.

My preferred format is: Casual
My favorite color/type is: Grixis = Blue/Black/Red
I prefer: Variety, Creativity, and Overkill.
I've got about 20+ decks right now all ranging from a white whienie/life gain deck to a 5 color progenitus and sliver deck. Although I play with about 5 or 6 decks the most simply because they're so much fun to play with. So far my favorite ones are my white whienie/life gain deck, a 5 colored deck that consists of slivers and progenitus, a red/white deck that is a really balanced deck (for once), a red/black deck that was my first deck that I built, and a Grixis discard deck that has 4 planeswalkers in it.
As for deck sizes, I just throw that kind of logic out the window 'cause the decks I play with that I do really well with are at least 100+ cards.
I don't like playing standard or in tournaments simply because if you get a rule wrong you get yelled at and most people who play that format around here have giant egos that take the fun out of playing. I don't care about winning or losing, as long as I can annoy the heck out of you with how I play then that's all that matters.

I prefer: Wide, wide, WIDE variety.
So, I've been playing for the better part of... 5, maybe 6 years now (started around the time Guildpact was coming out) and have traveled all over the Type-train. Started with strictly casual when my high-school friends taught me how to play. Then one of my friends got me into the competitive/standard scene around Planar Chaos, and I stuck there until about the time Lorwyn cycled out. At that time, I would have anywhere from 2-5 standard decks built at any one time, along with at least twice as many "extended"/casual decks.
These days, Standard is a format I only play at FNMs, as my meta is more or less all about EDH. I currently have 6 EDH decks built (technically 7, but Kraj doesn't really do anything o.o;; ), one Legacy deck (really bad burn) and one sub-par Standard deck that lets me wrack up Promo points. In my opinion, the only time you have too many decks is if you think to yourself "Damn, I've got too many decks." No one answer will ever be right for everyone, it's all about personal preference.

 I have about: (good gawd I don't know) probably over well over 1,000 cards.
I have about: not a lot I've never counted them, but guessing i'd go with 25 (maybe) rares.
I have about: hmm a lot? I don't know i've never counted them, but i'd guess over 50 uncommons/staple cards.

I started playing 3 years ago this month actually. Been to long because I can't remember what I started out playing lol. I know that DA-FDNT taught me how to play over the phone <3 I love playing it, but not many around here play it; well really i know no one that lives near me that plays it.
I have probably over 10 decks, but I really only play like less than 5 of them; my awesome Goblin deck, my awesome burn deck, my blue/red, and my white/red decks. I'm currently working on a solid white deck centered around a combo I love. I need to remake my blue/black deck and my black deck too. I haven't been in a mood to really play for awhile now.
I have to say I just play casual since the only person I can play against is DA-FDNT and we have to play over the phone, not easy to do, and I've really just been in a "blah" mood about mtg lately. Hopefully the new set might snap me out of it. I do think if you have more than 20 decks that might be to many lol.

Sooooo, I recently lowered by constructed deck count to 9... lowest it's been for me in quite a while...
I still can't get over the OCD urge to have a certain number of decks based on color/tribe/combo/type/etc. - & it's eating away at me gonk what to do.
~ I think it still all falls back on percentages but when your collection reaches a certain point, finding things i.e. your sorting process becomes key in building any deck & I'd wage any day that my collection is 2 blocks overdue for a massive re-sort. - But then that brings on a whole host of questions.
neutral Crap.
PS: I actually designed a piece of furniture for sorting cards... I'm thinking about adding shelving above it with lights over the sorting area xD

I prefer: a deck that isnt main streem or over done ! my burn deck uses walls to burn not just spells. my elf deck using a fire ball and my discard deck runs with mill and crying. i need a deck that is more fun to play with then it is effective or powerful
umm beleive it or not i now have 53 decks O_O yeah no jokeing ! and am working on like 36 more lmao XD i love making decks its my hobby. Each of my decks runs in a different way so it makes me more fun to play againt cuzz you never know what am going to bring into play. i dont go for overly powerful decks that can kill on turn 3 or 4 or any thing like that infact i only have 1 decks able to do any thing close to that. am much happyer with a deck that plays with style and tricks ^__^
a few decks i own are my demon-orges
wounder land nightmare ( a mill / scry / draw and discard feary deck witch can pin the enemy down and make it impossable to fight back ! )
raging land ( a red green and blue land fall deck )
fire ball elves
wolf back ( its a ally / wolf deck )
The black plage ( using -x/x spells and effects instead of kill spells or effcts )
and am working on a moon folk deck witch gets stronger with a bigger hand of cards !

I prefer: Red//White life gain and burn with haste and protection
I have about 20 decks
5 Angel decks
2 Mill
3 Elf
2 Dragon
1 Goblin
2 Artifact
2 Infinite Combo Decks
3 Black(mostly vampire)
I was annoyed with several decks and the kids got a hold of the box so my deck number went down,
I prefer my Angels and Goblins, My dragons do good but the cost is a little high at times,
Goblins on the other hand go pop and deal five damage so it's all good.

I recently cut my commons & uncommon's almost in half, taking out about 6,000 cards ~ I still have 3 4x corrugated storage boxes full, & my recently re-organized rare binder (turns out i had a great deal more than initially estimated, nearly 1,850+ rares) & took apart about 7 decks, leaving me with 7 & 1 version of the Sliver Premium deck...
I haven't been playing MTG for a while & I've got to say that going back through your stuff after a long down period can really give you some perspective. - So I'd say that it would be a good idea to run about 5 main decks, & 5 project decks 3nodding good balance, keeps things in order, & doesn't decimate your rares. ~ of course this is just my opinion, to each their own biggrin

I don't have as many cards/decks as everyone else but... I'm working on it. sweatdrop I started Magic like a month ago or so.

My preferred format is: Almost every widely played format.
My favorite color/type is: Every color all mixtures, but Artifacts are my favorite.
I prefer:Legends and shinny lands.
I have played MagicTG ever since I was 4 1/2, Mageta being one of my first Legend cards. I started with a old pack of portal and have been collecting since.
I have used theme decks ranging from Angels, Thralls, Demon's and ect. My best was a Merfolk deck with a Mill deck that followed on the same principle. I might be wrong about the full amount of my cards since storing them became a problem at one point. So I have a small store house out behind my home. I made sure that they where stored away correctly.

I pack about a dozen or more decks constructed or proxied up. I like to keep the gauntlet tuned for training to be the best.
