Welcome trainer! I hope this little guide can be of some help!

Please excuse me, for I still am sort of new to all this IV and EV nonsense. There are still a few things I don't get, and the things I have read are confusing. So I write this to, hopefully, make it simpler to understand. If I miss things or am incorrect, please correct me so I can edit this.

IVs and little about EVs

What is an IV?
An IV, or Individual Value, is a number that determines the strength of a pokemon's stat. It is a number ranging from 0 through 31, with 31 being the best you can get.

Example. I have a Shinx with a 31 IV in HP. It will have the best HP a Shinx can have, with no outside influences, such as EVs.

What is an EV?
Effort values, or EV for short, are on each Pokemon, and you earn them when defeating the Pokemon. The EVs help boost the certain stat, and makes it stronger.

Let's say I have a Luxray, and the opponent uses a Torterra.
Luxray has 3 Attack EV attached to it. The enemy's Torterra uses Earthquake and takes out my Luxray. Torterra has now earned 3 Attack EV.

I don't want to get too into it right now, because there's so much to it, so I'll leave it at that.

Can I change IVs?
Nope, they are set.

Boo!
I know, right. But there is hope!

Do tell!
You can compensate for a low IV with EVs.

Let's say I have a Machoke. He's good in everything but only has a 12 IV in Attack. I want him super strong though! So I have him battle with Pokemon with Attack EVs, and the more I get, the stronger he becomes.

Super pumped Machoke! Yesss!
More like pumped, sadly. While you can compensate for IVs to an extent, its better to try and get a better IV, and then add onto that! Then we're talking super pumped Machoke!

I'll go more into numbers in the next lesson. This is really just for an introduction.

How do I check IVs?
Good thing I made you ask! There are a few ways, for the most part its much easier to check IVs on Pokemon from eggs, who have not battled.

1. IV Calculators. This will be the big way to check. All the other methods will require an IV calculator. There are a lot of them out there, and I have only really used the one I will post after this paragraph. This is good if you keep tabs on your pokemon's EVs as well. It also works for pokemon with no EVs, like recently hatched or whatever you don't use in battle at all. The higher level the pokemon is, the better the calculator can determine what IVs you have.

http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/Calculators/IV.aspx
1a. When you open it, it will ask for you to fill out some boxes. Pokemon, its nature, Characteristic, Level, stats, and EVs. Then it will use its magic to give either an exact number or a range of the possible IV.

All these are ideal for pokemon with no EVs, unless you have been keeping tabs on EVs.

2. - Daycare Center
Save before you do this. Drop the Pokemon off in the day care, and bicycle around. A lot. I mean a lot. I usually wait for them to get to level 25 to see what IVs are. The higher the better though. 25 usually gives a decent feel for it, but level 50 is better, and so on. You can check at any level though. Once you get an idea for the IVs, you can reset! All your money is back, and you have a level 1 Pokemon that you now know all about.

3. This is a lot faster, provided you have like....99 rare candies. Basically just cram the pokemon full of them until level 100, crunch the numbers, and voila! IVs. And save before this too, so you can get those rare candies back.

4. There is a thing that people call IV Battles. I'm unsure if it works on all the Generation 4 games, but apparently it does work in Diamond/Pearl. You can take a full team of level 1 pokemon, or whatever you wish to check, and enter a level 100 battle. They will be raised to level 100 for the battle, from there you can crunch numbers again and find out. Only works in the Wi-Fi room.

Anything else?
I'm pooped. I can't really think of anything else that needs to be covered yet. I'll write up something on IV breeding, then EVs. But I think this is a good start. :]

I'm you, so no complaints here.
Awesome!

Thank you for reading. :] Just some info for those interested, if you're super casual and don't care, that's fine too! Pokemon is about fun above all else, in my opinion. Enjoy your Pokemon, no matter what!

~EV TRAINING~

Good day class! 4laugh Today I switched up the lesson, because this is the longest one. .___. And there are some items that are mentioned here that are so very relevant to IV breeding, so remember them!

First, let's go deeper into the world of Effort Values.

This can be the equivalent of a text book:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_effort_value_yield

Open it up. :3

Okay, look at the columns for the Pokemon and the Stats. Experience is just...experience, doesn't have relevance to the EVs.

Those are the Pokemon's EV yield, or what EVs you obtain upon defeating a Pokemon.

We'll go old school! Pokemon Red time!
I've chosen Charmander as my starter!
My rival chose Squirtle!
Pokemon Battle!
I won the match! Squirtle has 1 Defense EV attached to it, so my Charmander has now earned 1 Defense EV!

Each Pokemon can only have 510 EV attached to it.
Charmander has gained one, so now it can only obtain 509 more.

Additionally, you are only allowed 255 EVs per stat. Only having 510, you can, if you choose, Have two stats at 255 and nothing in the others. But, I wouldn't recommend it, unless it has good stats across the board.

Example of 255/255

Let's take the Charmander. It's fairly even pokemon. It's HP is its lowest factor though. So maybe I want it to have lots of HP, I would focus on a Pokemon like Caterpie, which has 1 HP EV. Sorry if the initials get confusing, that's what lost me a lot.

I grind like crazy, and now my Charmander has 255 EV in the HP stat. I only have 255 left to play with, 254 if this is the one who had gone against the Squirtle!

In which case we could grind even crazier on Metapods, who carry a 2 Defense EV yield, and get to 255 in it. Make sense?

While your Defense and HP are going to be really, really good, now you have no way to better anything else, besides leveling up. If you're looking for HP and Defense then who cares, but more often then not you're gonna want to have EVs in about everything.

The better alternative is right below, but I'll leave this up to show that you can do this if you really feel like it.

Example of 252/252/4, Better Than 255/255

Bigs thanks to lord bartimus for this. I had seen this but didn't quite understand, but thanks for clearing it up for me!

For every 4 EV a pokemon gets in a stat, it gains one stat point.
252 divided by 4 is 63, so 63 bonus stat points! Those 63 points are rewarded through levelling up until Level 100. If you did all the EV training at Level 99, then you'd get that hefty bonus at level 100. Also, Level 100 Pokemon cannot be EV trained.

Even if you aren't really going for that level 100 business, I'd recommend the 252 EV. You can't get 64 extra points in a stat sooo you might as well put those extra EVs into something else.

Math wizards will have realized that 252/252/4 does not equal 510. The last two EV points sadly won't affect the stat bonus, so feel free to put them where ever you like.

Example of 252/the rest being split up between the other stats.

This is the method I will be using on a few Pokemon.

This time we'll use my favorite Pokemon...Luxray. Let's say, for the sake of argument, my Luxray has no EVs at all. Leveled up by Rare candies or whatever.

If you take a look at Luxray, you will see that it has crazy Attack power. So I would want to expand on that. I train it on Seakings, which have a 2 Attack EV. Little time later, I now have 255 EV in its attack, making this powerful Pokemon even stronger!

But what should I do with the remainding 255? I see that Speed is Luxray's weak spot, but I also feel the Defenses and HP could use some love.

So! I will EV level them in those areas. Maybe I'll put 100 EV in speed, 60 EV apiece in Defense and Special Defense, and 35 in HP. Go check the chart and see which Pokemon I should use to get those EVs!

85's. 85's everywhere.

You want balanced EVs? 85 in everything. Probably the most tedious one to do, but I bet its worth it.

Sidenote

There are endless possibilities on how to use EVs. It's your call. :] I would recommend research into the Pokemon prior to starting, so you can maximize what you want.

Also, and this is involving the research, use the EVs the best you can.

While Luxray has a strong Special Attack, its not as good as its Attack. To use Luxray to its fullest potential, try not to put EVs into Special Attack, maximize on its strengths. A weak Special Attack doesn't harm you. Likewise, if I have an Alakazam, with a monster Special Attack but a lacking Attack, I wouldn't push Attack EVs into it. I would make the Special Attack even better!

You can if you REALLY want, but I wouldn't recommend it. Play the strengths. :3

This seems really complicated.
It is at first. With time it comes to you though. That's what I'm doing this for! I'm trying to make it more accessible for the trainers here, for those who are interested.

Anything you can recommend I do?
TAKE NOTES. >:U Keep a little tally or a calculator or whatever and track your EV progress. It'll help a lot, promise.

Wait...let's say I'm fighting a pokemon with a 3 EV yield in HP. When I beat it, I get the 3 EV from it, does it lose those EV?
No, the EV yield is seperate from the Pokemon's personal EV number. It's like experience. You don't lose experience points for losing.

This is sooooo boring! Can't this EV training go faster?
Actually, yes. There are quite a few ways.

Tellmetellmetellmeeeeee!!!!
Well, tell me where to start! Pokerus, Vitamins, or Held Items.

What's Pokerus?
That's a good place to start. I'll try and cut down on numbers, but let's just say its a fairly rare thing to stumble across in the game without any outside help.

It's a status condition that is a time based thing. Not removable by items. But its a good status to have!

What it does is double the EV yield you get. I have my little Shinx knock out a Squirtle. Squirtles, as we learn, have 1 Defense EV. With the Pokerus however, you actually get 2 Defense EV. Neat, huh?

It is a one-time condition on pokemon though. Once it gets cured of it, that's it. No more Pokerus for that Pokemon. But! You can infect other pokemon with it! Its as easy as having the infected Pokemon in the party, surrounding it, then entering a battle. In the grass is the quickest. After the batle ends, the pokemon surrounding the infected one are now infected! And you can just keep doing that.

It is a one-time thing as I said, but there is a way to hold onto that Pokerus for a long time. PC Boxes. Actually, as long as the Pokemon is in there, it will never lose the Pokerus infection. So you would be smart to keep a few in there.

If you're going with Pokemon in your party, the Pokerus will eventually go away. Apparently it involves a bunch of complicated things which I won't get into/don't know, but when the system clock hits midnight, all the infected pokemon in the party will lose one more day of the pokerus. So you may want to put those Pokemon into the PC before bed!

To clarify, the Pokerus isn't a one day thing. It only can be on your Pokemon once, but it lasts a few days. Longer in a PC box. :]

ALSO! biggrin If you're breeding, and the parents are infected, the egg will be too! Awesome, right?

I've set up a trading shop in the Poke'Colosseum. Go check it out!

One last one, in all of this I am speaking of Generation IV. The earlier Generations do things a little different. If you have questions on how things are changed, I'll do my best to answer.

Awesome! I want one!
...Technically, you do.

Oh...right.
lol

How about the held items?
Oof, there's a few of them out there.

First, there's the Macho Brace, introduced in Generation III. Only one in each game. I'll try and post their locations later. I want to get through this first.

The Macho Brace doubles EV yield earned in battle, similar to the Pokerus. The drawback in this and in fact all the held items affecting EVs, is that in battle your speed is cut in half. It isn't permanent, so no worries. Just sort of annoying.

So if my Charmander is holding that Macho Brace, and we beat the Squirtle, we've earned 2 Defense EV instead of only one!

These next items were introduced in Generation IV, and I think they're a better option to the Macho Brace. Again, they all half Speed in battle.

Power Weight = HP
Power Bracer = Attack
Power Belt = Defense
Power Lens = Special Attack
Power Band = Special Defense
Power Anklet = Speed

Now these work different. All of these give you 4 EVs in their field, regardless of the Pokemon you fought.

This time Charmander has the Power Bracer in the battle.
After defeating Squirtle, he will have earned 4 Attack EV and 1 Defense EV. That's pretty sweet, don't you think?

There's one more thing. Pokerus stacks with this.

You have a Bracer on your pokemon, and you battle a Luxray, which has 3 Attack EVs. You beat it! You have earned 7 from the luxray and the bracer, then double it with the Pokerus. That's 14 EV in one battle!

They aren't even too tough to grab either. You buy them with Battle Points at the Battle Frontier. 16BP per item.

These six items are used in IV breeding, so remember them!

That's sweet! Does Pokerus stack with Vitamins?!
If only. That'd be a bit too easy lol.

:T Man...
Well they're still good to use!

All the EV vitamins add 10 EVs to their corresponding stat. They can only be used up to 100 EVs though. To clarify, that is 100 per stat, not 100 overall.

So, if my Luxray has 30 EVs in Attack, I can only use 7 of the Attack EV vitamin to get it to 100.

The EV vitamins are, but if you've been playing Pokemon you should be a little familiar:
HP Up - 10 HP EVs
Protein - 10 Atk EV
Iron - 10 Def EV
Calcium - 10 Sp. Atk EV
Zinc - 10 Sp. Def EV
Carbos - 10 Speed EV

Remember when I said you can't EV train level 100s? It's still true, but you can still give them Vitamins, but that'd only be up to 100 EV. Besides, there's no more leveling for it.

That's all I got f-
WAIT!
Yes?

I've heard of EV-reducing berries but don't understand them. Can you explain?
Buuuh....sure. -hasn't really read about, gets handed papers- Thank you.

Let's see...ah! That's not too complicated actually.

There are 6 berries available that reduce EVs on your pokemon.
Like...say you have the Alakazam. And without realizing, you've got 200 Attack EVs when you've been meaning to get Special Attack! You can fix it with these berries! As a bonus, they increase a Pokemon's happiness! Sweeet!

The berries are:
Pomeg - HP
Kelpsy - Attack
Qualot - Defense
Hondew - Special Attack
Grepa - Special Defense
Tamato - Speed

So, we're gonna give Alakazam a Kelpsy Berry. Each berry drops the EV by 10. However, When an EV is above 100, it drops it to 100. Alazakam has 200, so one berry and poof! Down to 100.
Then you feed him 10 more to get back to 0 Attack EVs. Whew! handy info. Thanks to bartimus for bringing this to my attention. I recall seeing these in the games with Contests, so look there. I'm sure there somewhere in HGSS, but I'm not sure where.

Now, we're really done for the EV training info! I hope this helps out!

Next little lesson will be some information on IV breeding. There is randomness in it, so its not a set science.

Thanks for reading! This should be open to responses, so let me know if this is helping! :] It'd make me happy to know I'm not just doing it for me lol.

IV BREEDING

Final lesson time~

There really isn't too much that I can think of for this. I am only covering IV breeding and breeding natures, not egg moves. I might make that another topic however.

Breeding requires a lot of patience. A lot! There are very few certainties in breeding. If you want that ideal pokemon, you need to be patient.

Natures?
Oh, you've seen these. Calm, Adamant, Impish, so on. You can manipulate odds via Everstone.

I have a Luxray with a Timid nature, and I want a Shinx with it too. If I have it hold the Everstone, there is a 50% chance it will have a Timid nature.

That sounds good. So if both have Timid, and I give them both an Everstone, it's a sure thing!
Not in my experience. The 50% is something I've been seeing around. It is up to luck, so it might work for you.

Although Two Everstones isn't a bad idea. Once I tried it, I was getting the desired nature a lot more. My theory is...

Let's use some numbers. Each Parent is 100, and the Everstone is 50. Combined, the parents are 200, while one Everstone is 50, which is 1/4th of the total. So essentially, you now have a 25% chance to get the desired nature. So two Everstones is 100, so 50% chance.

I could be waaay off with this, but experience tells me this is fairly accurate. If I am wrong, tell me, please.

Also, info on natures.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nature

Are IVs easier?
Kind of. You can guarantee two IVs. I'll get into that in a moment, but first, how IVs carry over.

Proceed.
3 IVs are brought over from the parents. Without any items, it all will be random. 3 of the IVs on the baby will be inherited, and the other are random.

Example!
Taillow 1 = 31/31/31/31/31/31
Taillow 2 = 0/0/0/0/0/0
Baby Taillow = 31/0/12/5/15/31

It's worth noting that a Pokemon with higher IVs improve the odds of having good random IVs. But, no guarantees.

Odds...chance...can't I get something for certain?!
Power items, from the last lesson, pass along the corresponding IV.

If I gave the Taillow with perfect IVs a Power Anklet, the baby Taillow will get its Speed IV. If I give the other Taillow the Power Weight, it will get the IV for HP.

You can manipulate 2 of the 3 IVs, but the other one will be random, then you have 3 totally random ones.

Sounds frustrating.
It is for me. I have poor patience, so I'm not looking for 31s all over, nor am I trying to IV breed everything. Just the few Pokemon I love and want to be the best...like no one ever was.

But there are people who enjoy it. If you can find someone, perhaps you can get their assistance.

How do I breed a perfect IV Pokemon?
As far as I know, you can't guarantee it. You can weed out lower IVs over time, but ultimately half of it will be chance. Stick with it until you get IVs you are happy with. :]

This concludes the whole rant! If I have missed something, let me know! Breeding is the only fairly gray area for me, so if you have additional info help me out, to help out everyone. :]

I'll do my best to clear up things if you need it, but just understand that I don't consider myself a super great breeder, so I don't know everything.

Thanks for reading!~

so does this mean, by training my pkmn without having this in mind they could have random stats or something? Will that be a VERY bad thing?

I wouldn't say bad, but you wouldn't be getting the most you can out of your Pokemon.

Though I've been carefree about all this until now and I was beating the games just fine.

This stuff will be helpful to have and do in-game, but if you ignore it it won't really ruin the experience. This is a lot for people looking into competitive play, where they actually care about this stuff.

The only things that will be random is EVs, which you can fix with those berries.

Great guide, nice explanations, and a nice read.

Seeing as most of this applies to competitive play, perhaps a small section on IV's and their influence on Hidden Power could be added? But that's just me feeling like I have to add an idea and be contributive redface

FINALLY! I understand IV's and EV's! I've never really gotten up to speed about them but now taht I've read this I'm going to go work on them! <3 Thanks a bunch for this!

This is very useful... Maybe add a few examples of which pokemon gives which ev? E.g. Onix gives 2speed ev... and stuff

♥ | So I just got done taking the EVs off of my FAL2010 Mew (I got the berries from Scratch Off). Judging from how many berries I used, I ended up having inadvertently put the following EVs on Mew:

HP: 31-40
Atk: 41-50
Def: 41-50
Sp. Atk: 101+
Sp. Def: 91-100
Speed: 101+

Yeah, random... ninja

Just to add a little about the EV berries: I would definitely recommend using them on a pokémon that already has max happiness. If you give a berry to a pokémon with maxed happiness and EVs in whatever stat it is the game will say, " adores you! Its base fell!" and tell you, "It won't have any effect." if there are no EVs. If you use one on a pokémon that isn't happy and has no EVs, it will say, " became friendlier. Its base can't go any lower."

Just a note if you want to save yourself some berries. xd | ♥
