OsirisEgyptian god usually identified as the god of the Afterlife, the underworld and the dead. Through the hope of new life after death Osiris began to be associated with the cycles observed in nature, in particular vegetation and the annual flooding of the Nile, through his links with Orion and Sirius at the start of the new year. Osiris was widely worshiped as Lord of the Dead until the suppression of the Egyptian religion during the Christian era IsisShe was worshiped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the matron of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, the downtrodden, as well as listening to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers.[1] Isis is the Goddess of motherhood, magic and fertility. Thanks to Kagome Rocker for mentioning Osiris and Isis.

I used to know a bit much about these two, but sadly my knowledge took a swift turn to Greek and Asian histories. As I recall, tho, he was associated with the eb and flow of the river Nile. The eyes usually seen in shows like Yu Gi Oh are called the Eyes of Osiris. One was for life, and the other for death. Opposite spectrums as one, so you could even ssay some of Hybridian Lord is derived from tales of him and his bride. He was slain by his evil brother, and there are multiple tales. However, each one has his body being divided and seperated. His bride Isis would search and find the body, save for the phallus, and put it together for proper burial. The ancient Egyptian gods would be so impressed by such devotion, that they turned him into an immortal, who judges the underworld and the restoration of life. Agriculture is also tied in with him. Thats about all I can recall tho.

Yayness! Thanks for doing this post! I really like the epic love story between Isis and Osiris. Did you know when Osiris was murdered when he was still considered mortal; he was a Pharoah. Anyways the legend goes that his body was chopped up and scattered throughout Egypt. Isis realizing this decided to go and track down every single piece of his body. Isis then asked the gods at the time to help her put her husband back together. Showing her love and devotion towards the one she loved when she was alive...gave her the right to become a goddess of Egypt, and Osiris a god of Egypt. They then had a son named Horus whom is depicted as having a falcon like-head and human body. He was considered the God of the Dead.

*smiles* This... is going to be fun. So far everyone has bits of the story right, but here's the whole thing as I know it. *rubs hands together*
Alright, I'll skip the preleminaries of explaining how Geb got Nut pregnant and their father had to seperate them but then she was forbidden to give birth on any day of the year so light was stolen from Khonsu to make five extra days and that's why the moon waxes and wanes and get right to the part where things start to get interesting: after the births of the Osiris and Set and the twin sisters Isis and Nephthys... also, after they all paired up and got married.
OK, so Ra was Pharaoh of Egypt at the time, and he'd been Pharaoh for so long his bones were silver and his skin was made of gold, and he drooled when he walked; Isis wanted Osiris to rule over Egypt, and she followed Ra where he walked and collected the mud made from his drool in the sand and made it into a snake that she sent after him. The snake bit Ra and he was filled with venom, and because it was made from him it could possibly kill him, and Isis came to him and said she'd heal him if he told her his true name (even gods have true names that can bind their power if spoken: this is not just a faerie trait); he didn't want to die so he told her, and she spoke it in her healing prayer and he went to the realm of the immortals because he could no longer dwell in the mortal realm, and so Osiris became Pharaoh.
He was a good Pharaoh and everyone loved him, which caused his brother to feel intense jealousy. At the time Set was worshipped very heavily, but everyone loved his brother even more than him, and things reached a boiling point when Osiris and Nephthyis slept together and she got pregnant. Now, here's the confusing part of the story, because there are two answers: Nephthyis, being Isis's twin, only had to pretend to be her and trick Osiris because she'd always loved the older brother more, or Osiris knowingly did it... Either way, it set Set off, and he would have no more.
He made a box to his brothers exact measurements, then threw a party with 99 of his friends, inviting his brother; clever, he got his brother drunk but didn't let him realize everyone else wasn't drunk yet, and then he brought out the box. It was beautiful, inlaid with gold and made of rare wood, and Osiris wanted it, so Set proposed a game, where whoever fit the box perfectly could have it. Everyone tried, but only Osiris fit, and when he cheered that he fit perfectly Set told him it would be his coffin, and then he and his friends stabbed his brother to death, sealed the box, and flung it into the Nile.
It drifted until it reached a land and then a tree grew around it, a sweet smelling tree because the gods have a certain fragrance in Egpyt that's supposed to be very nice. The queen of the land smelled the tree and had it cut down and turned into a pillar in their palace.
I can't remember quite what happened once Isis got to the distant land, I think I remember she became a nurse to the queens infant son and was going to turn him into a god because she was so attatched to him, but she was caught in the act and left him to die (Sort of like that one Greek myth... though the Egyptian one predates it), and then she took the pillar with the box and left.
When she opened the box however and prepared to revive Osiris with her powers, Set appeared and tore his brother to shreds, flinging the pieces into the Nile; none of the animals ate any of the pieces, except for this fish sacred to Set who ate Osiris's phallax.
Isis went deep into mourning and began scouring the Nile for the pieces of her husband's body, but she couldn't find them at first; she made a boat of papyrus and sailed the Nile, which is why crocs don't attack those boats. She found her sister along the way, who had turned out to have gotten pregnant from the affair, and she left her child in the desert to die, begging forgiveness for what she had done, and Isis forgave her and allowed her to accompany her in her mourning, but went into the desert and got the child and raised him. (This was Anubis.)
Eventually she found them all, erecting burial tombs in the places they were found, and then she reassembled him and made a fake phallus and breathed life into him and they had sex, where she got pregnant with Horus; but Osiris could only live for the one life and became God of the Underworld.
Horus went on to challenge his uncle for control of Egypt.

*blush* Sorry... I can't help it, I'm pagan and this is my chosen pantheon. ^^;; Just don't get me started on the whole Egyptian/slave issue... or the demonization of Set. I can go for hours.
