The kakapo is a critically endangered bird native only to New Zealand. Also called the "owl parrot", it is nocturnal and entirely flightless. Its name itself means "night parrot". It is the world's heaviest parrot, as well as the only flightless parrot ever categorized.
This species is defined as having "finely blotched yellow-green plumage, a distinct facial disc of sensory, vibrissa-like feathers, a large grey beak, short legs, large feet, and wings and a tail of relatively short length". The males and females are of the same size (although females tend to be narrower and will a smaller "facial disc"), and the males take multiple mates at one time but have no involvement in raising the chicks. They attact mates with their distinctive call.
As of February 2010, there are only 122 kakapos recorded and most have been given names. The kakapos once lived without mammalian predators, and so lost their ability to fly early after breaking off from a common genus. With European and Polynesian colonization came predators like cats, rats, and stoats and the kakapo were almost wiped out completely. Conservation efforts began in the 1890s, but not much was done until the Kakapo Recovery Plan in the 1980s. The surviving kakapos were then moved two two predator-free islands, Codfish (Whenua Hou) and Anchor where they are monitored closely. Two other islands, Resolution and Secretary, are currently in the process of being restored to be a suitable kakapo habitat.
As stated before, kakapos are nocturnal. They roost under cover in trees or on the ground during the day, and emerge at night. Although they cannot fly, they are excellent climbers and can "parachute" down to the ground by spreading its proportionately small wings. Their legs are very strong as well, and they move in a "jog-like gait" that can continue for miles. Younger kakapos indulge in play-fighting, in which one bird often locks the neck of the other under its chin, but are generally gentle. They are known for their curiosity as well, and have been known to interact with humans and have distinct personalities. For food, kakapos are generally herbivorous with a beak specially designed for finely grinding food. It eats plants, seeds, fruits, and pollens and is known to hold a leaf beneath one foot and tear away the edible parts with its beak. The little ball of indigestible plant matter they leave behind in the process is a sure sign of kakapo inhabitation.

Name: Connor Gender: Male
Likes: The boy would do almost anything for fresh fruit, and he very much enjoys music and dancing. His favorite time of day is night time to early morning. Dislikes: Pain is a big problem, and blood never sits well. If you ask the boy, thunder is a terrible thing. Personality: He is endlessly curious about anything and everything from new people to that funny wiggle in the grass. His determination knows no bounds when it comes to sating said curiosity, and he can often be found getting hurt or in trouble in the process. The boy is apt to getting lost and placing himself in harm's way on a regular basis. Otherwise, he is a pleasant and happy child who rather enjoys cuddling. When it comes to meeting adults, Connor tends to be more quick to trust and accept than with children his own age, which poses problems with making friends. Given enough time or the proper prompting, though, he will happily open up. Along this same line, he prefers to be with others than to be alone, although he could sit alone for hours listening to music.
Miscellaneous: Regardless of how large his wings grow to be, Connor will always be flightless.

Name: Tegan J. LaChett Age: 28 Gender: Male
Location: The City of Aerr Occupation: Baker Appearance: He has curly or violently wavy red hair, usually tied up high to keep it out of his face and his work. His eyes are blue and somewhat sleepy-looking, but not otherwise spectacular above his freckled cheeks. There are brown tattoos visible on his hands, and on his forearms while he works. They are unreasonably tribal for an upstanding gentleman, but he seems neither ashamed nor proud of them. To further counteract his demeanor, his ears are pierced multiple times, as is his right nostril. Personality: Tegan is extremely personable and will spend hours on end talking and listening to total strangers. He often experiences wanderlust, though, and will travel between the towns and further on a whim. Romance is not at the forefront of his mind, even as much as he loves people. It will come in its own time, he thinks. The man has almost no temper and is near-impossible to rile.
History: Mr. LaChett was a wealthy businessman in the City of Aerr, traveling to the town of Nuan for a possible shipping contract. It was there he found his future wife, and chose to remain with her there. Marriage came quickly, soon followed by a little boy, whom they decided to name Tegan. The boy grew in the natural way, and when he was old enough he left for school in the City of Aerr where he boarded. On holidays and free week-ends, though, he would make the lengthy trip to Nuan via tram.
By the time University ran around, Tegan had already realized a deep affinity for history and culture. He spent most of his time reading or studying for his favorite classes, and at 19 he decided to leave school for travel. With his father's money supporting him, Tegan joined a band of wandering merchants as they explored the land, and he learned many things that others could never explain. In three years, the group was headed back for the City where he was meant to break off and return to school. These men were not trained to predict sand storms, though, and they were rather confused when a man appeared to warn them of one oncoming.
The merchants followed this man to a small village that held a tribe of odd people. They were tattooed and pierced, and they wore heavy clothes even in the heat and wrapped scarves around their heads. Sturdy walls stood behind each of their tents to protect from the sand storms, and Tegan took refuge with a young couple and their infant daughter. A violent sand storm came and passed with no lives lost, but when the group decided to continue for the city the next morning, Tegan chose to stay. He was enamored with the place.
The young man stayed 5 years with the tribe who called themselves the Dala'rai and grew deeply involved in their culture. He was eventually accepted as one of the tribe, passing through their rites and rituals and eventually being tattooed just as they were. Tegan loved the time spent there, but after that time he chose to leave; to go back to the city and spread the knowledge of his travels. Again with his father's funds to back him, he started his own bakery and tea house within the City, selling product he had learned to make in his years abroad, as well as the traditional fare. He still makes occasional trips to visit the Dala'rai.

Oooooh, Rabid!<333 I fell in love with Tegan. :3 I love how you took the initiative to create the little tribe of people in the desert. ^_^ <333 That was creative. ;3 Obviously, it's a small tribe of people, but I'm SO glad that you decided to do it. It's quite interesting to say the least. ^-^
I love the child as well, taking the characteristics from the bird of being more 'nocturnal' and liking the same foods as does the bird he came from. :3
This is accepted by the way! <3 Since you said you were done. ^-^ <3 I accept it. : D Buuut, I would like to see a little more on Conner as far as personality goes...I don't really know what though. xD Maybe a broader spectrum of traits? But besides that, I find this to be quite the interesting little concept. :3
