Hello! I'm new and I'm thinking of starting an herb garden, the problem is I don't know which herbs to use...
Is outdoors better than indoors? I live around Seattle, so we don't get much sun, but lots of rain.
Any suggestions for which herbs I should use?
Thank you!

I live north of Seattle, just south of Bellingham, so I know the rain too! If you want a winter herb garden, plant indoors, in pots. But honestly, in this area, it's best to start your herbs inside and then when the last heavy frosts are past and the rain slows down (Around April) move your plants to the garden outside. Plants like mint will die off and then grow again the next spring, if you have them thriving over the summer.

At least you don't have to worry about the sun roasting your poor plants to death in the summer or the rain drowning them in the spring. That really sucks a lot about Georgia. Every time I try to plant anything outdoors here it gets alternately fried and then drowned. I remember at the beginning of spring one year I had like gazillions of seedlings and they were so beautiful but they all got killed off. When we get a house with more space I'm going to plant some of them in a sunny window. That'll be nice.

I have a little greenhouse thing- it's a portable greenhouse on wheels. I use it to start my seedlings, (or try to, I kill things so easily) and then I plant them when the danger is past. ^_^

Mint is a invasive species, If you don't want mint to take over your garden i suggest you make raised bed.

When i lived in portland i noticed that you should start them inside near a window. and or you could make a plasitic rap tent for the starting seeds (a cheap greenhouse)

I noticed lemon balm, mint families, sage and other do really well!

Oh, I didn't know that- it's good to know. My dad loves basil pesto, so I'll try my hand at that. ^_^

For some reason, where I'm living now I can't get ANYTHING to grow. Indoors, outdoors....

A rosemary bush that had been growing for YEARS died when I moved it with me. I was so upset.

So I guess I'm going to have to wait until I move somewhere else to start a garden.

...bad air maybe? What on earth would cause that?

It all depends on what you want the herbs for; that will determine which kinds to plant. If you're looking for help in the kitchen, rosemary, basil, oregano, cilantro, mint, parsley and thyme are good to start with. If you're looking for more of a medicine chest, the herbs are a lot different. Chamomile, lavender, marigolds, mint, lemon balm, fennel, colts' foot and many others would be best to plant.

Every seed package comes with guidelines as to what your plants will need light and soil-wise. Try to follow that as much as you can! A south or west window or at the side of the house would be best for plants that need moderate to large amounts of sun, while the north or east windows are better for shade loving plants.

I have been gone for a while so hello! biggrin With spring around the corner it reminded me to come back to post on the guild. I have so many seeds to plant. I already started some indoors this week. I have basil, parsley, chamomille, peppermint, and sage. I never have any problem getting those plants to grow.
I cant wait for spring. I have moonflower, morning glory, fouroclocks, snapdragon and about 15 other flowers to plant biggrin

Careful with the morning glories, they can be toxic- and they can choke other plants. ^_^

Gah, so can sweet pea. I knew that it was a climbing plant, but I didnt' realize that if I didn't give it something to climb, it would put a chokehold on my other plants in an attempt to climb something.

Yes, I know how those morning glories like to grow rampant. I love them for it. I usually plant my vines away from the rest of my garden. Last year we had a gazebo, I planted moonflowers, morning glories and fouroclocks together at each of the four corners. By summer the whole gazebo was covered and it was really neat to have a tent of vines and flowers. Thank you for the advice. biggrin
