Sommer stood outside the home he shared with Robin and Rodanza and stretched. The shade around the enormous tree that doubled as their home kept the summer sun from beating down on him too harshly.
A giant redwood, the bottom had been hollowed out, almost half way up, ages ago by woodland animals and rain had washed away a lot of the soil around the base of the tree, so the huge roots formed a canopy over a den that had once been the home to a family of some sort of animal.
But after observing the burrow for some time, he'd come to the conclusion that whatever had lived there vacated some time ago. Thus Sommer had spent weeks in secret, digging the den bigger and retrofitting it to suit a new family.
After digging the den deep and far enough to suit at least 8 grown herla, he'd carefully pulled up turf from some of the softest points of the forest, replanting it into the soil of the den. After a couple weeks, the grass had taken root and now the floor of their home was soft, alive, and always growing. Rodanza would like that, a soft, comfortable place to live with the loves of her life.
(The grass also doubled as a convenient midnight snack if one was too lazy to leave the den!)
The tree above them was still alive, providing them ample shade and protection from the rain. Their surroundings were of the deeper parts of the forest, so it was always cooler where they lived then in the meadow. He knew Robin would like that, living again in the parts of the woods he'd roamed and loved most of his childhood. Both had been delighted when he had finally presented the new home to them, and quickly...celebrated...their new lives together.
But that was a season or two ago. Now the pitter patter of tiny hooves over ran the meadows again. And the three of them, though unconventional parents by many other standards, also felt the pull of their biological urges.
Robin and Sommer pooled their caps together and had bought a bottle of liquid love from the bear trader.
That had been a couple of weeks ago. Other then the, uh, obvious, they hadn't been sure how to use the potion. Each had drank a large swallow of the stuff and then..did what young herla in heat do.
Now they were waiting to see if the potion had worked. Sommer grinned to himself, also blushing furiously. If it hadn't worked, he was more then willing to find more caps, buy another bottle and give it another go....

Rodanza had awoken not long ago, having slept in a little later than usual. She found herself starving for some reason and exceedingly thirsty. She headed down by the river, and even though she had a good dinner the night before she proceeded to nom away a patch of dew-covered grass and quench her thirst. She felt much better afterwards.
She looked at her reflection in the river and something seemed...off. She blinked, noticing something about her middle, but she couldn't believe it. She bent her neck down, looking at herself upside down from between her forelegs, quirking a brow at her suddenly larger midsection.
She blinked, straightening up.
Was...was she getting FAT?!
She had to be imagining things...A little worried and needing a second opinion. she headed back over to their hallowed out tree, finding Sommer there and approaching him," Do you think I look bigger?," she asked him directly, not wanting to beat around the bush.

Robin was climbing out of their den home as Rodanza came trotting back from the river. He had returned home with Zev, his winged mion after a morning out wandering and exploring. The little rodent had darted up the trunk as soon as Robin had ducked the thick roots that served as ceiling and was in her nest now, probably napping, if the faint snores coming from up there were any sign.
His ears perked when he heard the question she posed to their hart and he looked at her as he approached them without hesitation, a slight swagger in his step. His eyes following the line of Rodanza's form; there was a definite bump, perhaps a bulge, he put on his most dashing smile as he closed the distance, his eyes twinkling merrily.
He saw these two every day, and they had not ceased to fill him almost to the very top of his heart with joy each time. Robin nudged her gently, trotting along her side, brushing his torso along hers and turned to stand next to Sommer, nuzzling him, trying to contain his expression. "Yes, do you?" He murmured teasingly, Yes, you do~ he thought, but waited for Sommer to say anything, before saying more himself. Robin knew, at least, if his own mother's words held any weight with him, that positive words were best in this type of situation, what she wanted to hear, rather than the truth, but the truth was so important to the trio, and perhaps the truth might be what she wanted to hear.

It only took a moment for Sommer to know that Robin was going to be no help in this situation. He was barely holding back a smirk and was waiting for HIM to answer first.
Oh you...b*****d....
He looked at Rodanza. She seemed to have a earnest expression on her face waiting for the answer. He shifted his gaze for a second to more thoroughly inspect her profile.
Huh...maybe she had gain some...curves recently....her tummy and backside seemed a big more...round then usual...and it wasn't completely a bad thing actually...
Wait..focus...fooccuuussss...He scolded himself.
"Well...Rodanza...you look..." He searched for the right words, fearing what wrong ones would cost him. "you..look...."
Just outside his peripheral vision, his guardian appeared, waving his arms frantically.
Do....NOT...EVER...tell a woman she looks bigger! Never!
Sommer's nose wrinkled a little as he though. He had tried to be more honest and upfront about things but wasn't this one of those...what did his guardian call them...woman traps?
"well..you look..."
"Lovely!"
"lovely as always! Maybe just a little bit..."
"No no don't say it!"
"more...curvy then usual..."
The guardian threw up his arms like "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???"
His guardian's reaction caused Sommer to feel a little panicky.
"But But you glow! Positively glow! And are beautiful! So..so beautiful I just..am..overwhelmed by..your beauty.."
The guardian face palmed, and with a tiny wave, turned and vanished.
"You're on your own now pal.."
Sommer began to panic more.
"I..I UH...UH..." he whimpers "please don't kill me Rodanza..."

Rodanza's expression went blank for a moment as she stared at them. For a minute, one would've thought the doe was going give her mates a swift reminder of how to treat a Woman but....
Her expression changed comically from blank to utter confusion, her haunches sitting themselves on the ground. She looked very much like a confused puppy.
"That...doesn't make any sense...," she muttered, sitting before them and trying to figure out why she had suddenly grown thicker," I've been eating the same as always...nothing new...Not sick...," she murmured.
Her ears perked and she tilted her head at them silver eyes blinking.
"Hey...guys...What if...I'm pregnant?," she said, blinking at them, not really knowing what to do.

"Then we will be the happiest of herla, yes?" Robin was smiling full-out now, he went down to his knees and nuzzled Rod, because of the confusion on her face, the lost expression, he wasn't making fun of her. Robin would never do that, but perhaps she had forgotten, Robin looked up to Sommer, their hart did tell her what that potion had been that they shared, did he not?
"You look so worried, this is what we wanted, what we planned for... If you want advice, there are our own mothers-" he stopped short. Robin had not spoken to his own mother in ages, not since before... Rodanza's own mother, he had never met, never seen, and Sommer's, while she was a lovely herla, might be a bit too high strung, finding out that she as a grandmother (again), but she was not the only herla that had carried, that they could get advice from.
"Or any other that has carried, surely, yes, we can talk with. That can answer any questions."
He sounded more sure after the pause that had made him frown with his own worries. More and more Robin had been thinking that he should go and seek out his own parents. While he had been so sure that he had nothing to say to them, for so long... did they even deserve to hear this happy news, would they even care. He didn't think so. They had not even sought him out, not even after this long.
edit: small edit made to Robin's train of thought, to keep with canon.

Rodanza blinked, nuzzling Robin," Does the potion really work that quickly? I mean, even now I can feel my belly growing bigger. And I'm hungry again even though I just ate...," she mumbled.
And then a whole new emotion emerged on her face that moment, warm and filled with kindness as she stood, feeling the added weight of the life they had created. He little red tail wagged and she gave a joyous little laugh, doing a little prance in place.
"I can't believe it! I'm going to be a mother!," she exclaimed, the warm glow about her hard to ignore. Her smile was infectious, her unbridled happiness causing her to nuzzle her two mates repeatedly.
