OKAY SO I AM LE BACK, ME, FORMERLY POIVRE NOIR. So during my absence I have been noticing how much Muse sell themselves for money, to TWILIGHT! I love Muse, or should I say... Loved, because now I don't even care about checking updates at Muse.mu, which I did daily before they went Whores for Glittering Vampires. Discuss, am I right or wrong to feel this way? I really love the old Muse, so I usually pretend they are still young underground brit-boys.

They've changed. Thank god their old stuff is still intact. I wasn't too fond of The Resistance (don't get me wrong, it had its moments but Absolution was a purely cut diamond and OoS was a freaking masterpiece as well, you just don't hold a candle to those two), so if they decide to release another album of that caliber then I might need to start looking into other bands.
To put it in short, I won't be as avid of a fan if they continue down the path they're on.

I agree with you to the fullest, I wasn't such a fan of The Resistance either, to be quite honest. Though the old stuff is truly genius, even though I might not have the same taste in music now as then, I still think it's outstanding. I miss the old Muse gonk

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I started looking for 'other bands' a year ago. sweatdrop
I grew tired when twihards started to walk around and declare their love for what used to be my band. I mean, I started listening to them when I was 9, back in the OOS era. I was hardcore. I bought every CD I could get my hands on twice; I read every magazine they featured in...I did fanart and read muse news religiously every day. I remember when NOBODY knew who Muse were, outside of the internet.
When people would ask me what kind of music I listened to, and upon my reply; they would be baffled, and think that I said 'the news', having never heard of 'Muse' before in their lives.
That Muse - the one I knew and loved - is dead. And now we're left with a mainstream band, that's like every other. Granted, I haven't actually seen them side with twilight other than when they've been asked if twilight can borrow their work, or if it's been a bit of creative fun (which is what all good bands enjoy and wont pass up)...but even though they 'feel' the music more than other mainstream bands, and they aren't stooping to using their fans...I just don't feel the same connection to their music as I used to.
The best thing to come out of the resistance was the exo tracks...they actually made me cry. But that's because I'm a sucker for classical music; and to be honest, it was the orchestra that gave me that feeling.
I'm done with Muse. I'll always be a fan, but that's all. They're not my favourite band anymore. Hell...I actually found a song that I dislike! (Guiding Light). That's never happened to me with them before.

I actually really like their recent stuff; it's different but I think if they had kept doing OoS or Absolution style albums they would be kind of boring by now. Even if the experimentation with new styles doesn't always work, it's better than doing the same thing over and over until everything they do is just stale.
I must be the only person in the world who loves both Citizen Erased and Undisclosed Desires.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is they're blowing this new style up and saying it's the new them and selling out to the highest bidder, as if it's their best. It's certainly good, but definitely not their best. If you're gonna sell out, sell out when you're at a grade-A caliber. Not this rank C okay material.

"We always have group sex in the studio. *Agrees* sweatdrop EDIT: I've been like Skye as well. I've had a new found love for Apocalyptica, Get Scared, and Nico Vega. Although Apocalyptica is really big, they're still reallly down to earth with their fans. And the other two bands haven't made it big, but deserve to. So they're still down to earth with their fans. Maybe I'm freaking out? But I think you're right. They're just in it for the money now. I'm just kind of happy that it took them this long and I still had a good solid 2 years of the Muse we all love. Music is love between men." -Perttu Kivilaakso

Well I think what's got me is the 'tossing of glasses off to the fans' et cetera. That just seems really showy and egocentric.

Here here!
I'm fed up with hearing about "oh, I want to take it to the next level and go crazy...maybe we can land in a UFO, or maybe we'll do a whole album full of 60 minute songs."
I want them to stop thinking of ways to impress people, and to start actually doing something original. I mean, they are original, yes. But...how much would we rather have something moving, that maybe makes us cry? I know I'd want that a billion times over, compared to flashy gigs that nobody can get to anymore because they're so god damn expensive and futile. (I mean srsly...they have abandoned their own country in favour of europe. They barely tour here...and when they do, it's probably in the middle of a semester, or it sells out before anyone has a chance).
I want them to do something for ALL the fans - on the CDs. I want it to be moving, and I want them to put their heart and soul into it. Sure, they want to have fun...but...it's still about the fans. And the resistance didn't feel like that to me. I want another Absolution. Something full of emotion and ideals.
Absolution had a post-apocalyptic, political vibe. But it didn't need to sing about the 'leaders in disguise' or anything even remotely conspiracy-ish, because it got the message across through sound and feeling. I want something like that. Not something that sells CDs because it's "crazy Matt."

crying I don't have much to say. Personally, once I like a band, there's not much that they can do wrong in my eyes.
Muse is still my favorite band, but they don't have as big of a spot in my life. Honestly, I don't think it's anything they did, so much as it's what I did. I lost my ipod, so I rarely sit and listen to music in general. Also, I'm so busy it's ridiculous, so it's not like I can spend hours researching them and talking in our guild... I've also discovered a new band, Arcade Fire. I feel like someone already posted something about them, but I was actually introduced by a personal friend. So if I've taken the time to bust out my old laptop and pop in a cd, it's theirs.
Honestly, I still get excited when I walk into Hot Topic and see a new Muse shirt, or when they randomly pop up in a magazine. The fact that they have something to do with Twilight honestly doesn't bother me that much either. It's the fans of both Twilight and Muse that bother me. The former: You don't know Muse, shut up. The latter: They didn't sell themselves to Twilight. They let them borrow their work. It's not a crime! It's not like they're constantly talking about it in interviews or anything like that. They're not wearing Twilight tees or endorsing their merch. Chillax.
So I guess Muse will always have that special spot in my heart. They introduced a new sound to my ears. Matt's talent inspired me to start taking both piano and guitar lessons, which have helped me so much. My love for them brought me here, which we all can admit is awesome.
Really, I have no complaints. I'll be uh... uh.. Canada? Switzerland? I think it's Switzerland. I'll be neutral.

It seemed like they... gave up on this album. I mean, their other albums had many lyrics on as well as the music. But The Resistance had THREE symphonies! It was full of just music and not as many lyrics. Now, I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it's not as great as Absolution. And I agree, they should try out new directions to keep us entertained but they should remember what sold and what fans loved and try to steer in that direction again. Although in an interview they said 'We really don't care if everyone thinks it's terrible' or something like that.
But some of the songs seem a bit pop, and that's what I ran away from. To tell you the complete and honest truth I would give anything to be where I was a year ago. Then, Muse were just a band that a friend liked. Then, music was the forbidden subject 'cause all I did was talk about Mark Owen. But I was comfortable then. People automatically knew to say that it's terrible, because I was the only one who liked that music. But now, one of my friends is caught in a limbo, she can't say a song is terrible 'cause she dosen't feel that way and she won't say it's insanely amazing because then all I'll do is go fan-crazy.
Now, I'm not saying I wished I'd never heard of Muse, because I don't. I'm happy that I listened to a band that redefined my attitude to lyric-writing (I'm a lyricist). They were the band that showed me that all rock is not just a load of shouting nonsense, but can actually have meaning. I would just give anything to be where I was last year, comfortable.

It's ok, Rat.
Loper, I'm pretty sure Muse did say that at one point. Personally, I respect that about them. At least at that point, they were making the music because they wanted to. Not because other people wanted it.
