Doctor Who's American run, contrary to popular belief, did not start with Tom Baker, it started with John Pertwee.
The BBC first syndicated John's episiodes to Time-Life Television. However, Time-Life was liberal in it's broadcast order, making Three's adventures rather confusing.
Then the BBC syndicated Tom Baker's episodes to various broadcasters, finally settling on PBS. PBS was far more faithful to the originally intended broadcast order, and the show really took off this time. It would seem that the show ran well past Tom's era, but that Tom's episodes were the ones most reran.
In 1996, the movie was made. Unfortunately, viewership was low and the planned revival would not be for some time.
In 2006, the Sci-Fi Channel (now known as SyFy) aired the 2005 series, running it for 3 years before it moved to BBC America where it is currently shown.
The Peter Cushing movies also have a DVD release.

Truthiness. I'm an American viewer and was born only 3 years before the movie, and knew nothing of DW til Christopher Eccleston. Then I went back and tried to watch all the other Doctors, but lost track, ended up only seeing a few episodes of each Doctor at the end razz

In some good news, apparently they are planning to release the Doctor Who Movie in the States. Up until now it was only released in 'Region 2' format (I believe. Which ever one covers the UK) but now they are going to release it for 'Region 1' DVD players. That's great. I'd like to see it with better quality than what's on Dailymotion. 'Course, it may look even sillier with better quality... But hey, the sillier the better. The level of epic fail actually makes the movie... somehow epic. = )

A Region 1 DVD of the movie would make a good addition to my DVD collection, alongside my Region 2 DVD. The audios and books did explain the movie's inconsistencies, though.

Yes, and quite well, I think. But with or without them, that movie was... well, it made episodes like 'The Happiness Patrol' look mundane by comparison. I mean, acid spit? What the hey? But oh how fun it is to watch.
