Selkies are beautiful water maidens that are found mostly in Northen Coastlines off of the English and Irish shores. Practically they are found where ever seals maybe found. They usually disguise themselves as seals, when they don't want anyone to find them. It is said in folklore that if you steal a seal skin from a sielkie they are entirely indepted to you for life, so in order words they will become your servant. This was rumored as to why so many sailors had wives. A selkie can never return to the ocean unless her skin is returned. A great book to read about the selkies is one called "The Folk Keeper" by Franny Billingsley. Your job is to come up with anything dealing about selkies!

James A. Hetley's books Dragon's Eye and Dragon's Teeth feature a family of shapeshifters that become seals. (Not exactly selkies, but close.)
There are also the movies The Secret of Roan Inish (in which a boy was lost at sea and raised by a selkie), The Seventh Stream (in which a man falls in love with a selkie), and Ondine (which I don't think is directly about a selkie, but the woman is suspected to be a selkie or a mermaid).

Selkies are usually beautiful women who can turn into seals.
As you said, by taking a selkie's sealskin while she is in the form of a woman, one can enslave a selkie. They sometimes try and trick their captors into revealing the location of their skins, and escape. Some fall in love, but are torn between the love of their husbands and their love of the sea.
