Does anyone of you as a Christian smoke and/or drink? I'm a former smoker (going on 3 years without it, woot biggrin ), and was never really a drinker. On special occasions (weddings, new years) I did drink some bubbly, but I don't stock up on beers during my weekly grocery shopping.
My question to you: is it ok for a Christian to drink occasionally? I'm not referring to the "woohooo, let's get wasted" type of drinking.
Scripture is pretty silent on the smoking thing...

i have smoked before - never been addicted and it wasn't always a pleasant experience.
i believe that smoking is sinful because it doesn't help keep our temples clean. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Ghost and our bodies are to glorify God.
I dont see how smoking a cigg glorifies God or helps our temple in any way. It depletes our bodies of oxygen and poisons us.
1Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
As for alcohol, I am certain that we're not supposed to get drunk, as we are commanded to be sober. I think that a small amount of alcohol is okay when taken for medicinal purposes or other circumstances that may call for the consumption of alcohol. but i can't really think of any situations that absolutely require a person drink booze. Also... this is where ppl run into conflicts because they can't agree on how much is a small or moderate amount... ect. I would think it depends on the person?
I completely hate the taste of alcohol so it's never been an issue for me. i'm not the type who enjoys a beer or a glass of wine. My husband sometimes askes me to have a glass of wine w/ him and i try to choke down a few sips every now and then. But i usually just can't because i literally am repulsed by the taste. And it seems like the more expensive the wine is the more i hate the flavor. lol

Not trying to find a loop hole here, just wondering. I know I should keep the temple clean.
At times, I'm unsure about say sharing a beer with a friend for dinner. I mean, in Jesus' time, there weren't sodas around, so does that mean, people only had water or wine to choose from?

I know many christians who like to have the occasional bottle of beer with their dinner. But drinking to get drunk or just to drink isn't alright. This is just my opinion on the subject, many people have different opinions and you'll probably get many different answers anyways.

I mean, in Jesus' time, there weren't sodas around, so does that mean, people only had water or wine to choose from? I didnt feel that you're trying to find a loop hole xp Well, back then they had fresh fruit & vegetable juices, milk, water. Not sure when tea and coffee came about but i think they are really old beverages. i have a super health conscience sis-in-law and her son, for the first 5 years of his life never had anything to drink other than water, fruit & vegetable juices and milk. Also i believe that not only should we never get drunk, but we also shouldnt get buzzed on alcohol or tipsy. Because when you're tipsy or buzzed are you sober? Nope. so i'm curious tho - Do your friends ever pressure you to have a beer w/ them or get drunk w/ them? i know it's not easy. If i loved the taste it would probably be more difficult for me to refuse alcohol, but hating the flavor kinda helps lol

No Sarlo. My friends never forced me to have a drink with them. And now most friends I hang out with, don't have wild drinking binges anymore.
As for the not being buzzed or tipsy, I understand that we should be sober. But there are times we can't be. Like when experiencing side effects from medications. Now I don't want to be legalisitic about drinking or not drinking beer. I definitely know my limits and I had to come to terms with that with myself and God.

Hi this is the former PrayerWarrior and I feel I must say something because I know there are alot of younger people in this guild. I don't drink but I used but by the grace of God I am still alive to tell about it. Smoking. It IS a sin because it is bad for your body and mind. I say it's bad for your mind because the poisons in cigarettes are as addictive as the drug heroin. Therefore it is very, very hard to stop. JUST DON'T START!

I occasionally drink some wine or some bubbly at parties or special occasions... besides that, nothing else. Well for me it's okay to drink as long as you don't get drunk. Being intoxicated is not only bad for you but for the people in your surroundings as well. I mean, you become a liability and a security threat anywhere you are when you're drunk because you're not controlling yourself anymore but rather the alcohol is controlling you... eek
On smoking, well, it's bad but it's odd how some smokers don't get sick even in the long run...

Jesus himself drank wine. I believe that drinking is fine so long as you drink responsibly. Smoking on the other hand, I find to be bad.

Cry of the Celts Jesus himself drank wine. I believe that drinking is fine so long as you drink responsibly. Smoking on the other hand, I find to be bad. i disagree. i dont believe Jesus made or drank alcoholic wine. i believe the wine He created was the best tasting, freshly squeezed what we call juice. God referred to the juice that was still inside the grape as "wine" Isaiah 65:8"Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster.... Fermentation is a picture of sin like leaven is also a picture of sin. Also, Jesus would have been causing the people at the wedding to get drunk which is clearly a sin for one to do. Habakkuk 2:15, "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also..." Of course everyone has the right to believe whatever they wish about Jesus. but I believe Jesus was and is the perfect sinless Lamb of God. it is my belief that He did not consume alcoholic wine nor give alcoholic wine for anyone else to consume. heart

SARL0 i did not suggest that your friends ever forced you, ok? are you like... frustrated w/ what my posts say? Why do you think I was frustrated with your post? I just replied to your post, and answered your question. Nothing more, nothing less. As for the later discussion of Jesus drinking alcoholic wine... I'm sure, HE appreciated good foods and drink. Yet, HE was also wise not to eat things that were corrupted. HE was Jewish after all, and they had eating and surely drinking laws as well.

I will chalk that one up to being a woman - LOL! i think we do that alot (misunderstand someones tone) via interwebs communication. lol ayup...... redface
