-Etsuko II: War of the Phoenix- -Introduction- Welcome to the sequel of Etsuko: The Land of the Phoenix. First off, I'd like to so that I will be allowing characters without phoenixes into this RP in order to try to make it flow easier and try to keep it alive. Etsuko I was way more successful than I thought it would be. However, it began to die after the fifteenth page. I hope that this RP will be even more successful than its predesessing storyline, so let's make it happen! Thus, I, Shiro Yoshiyuki am proud to present Etsuko II: War of the Phoenix. -Table of Contents- 1.) Introduction and Table of Contents 2.) Rules and Guidelines 3.) A History of Etsuko 4.) Prequel Summary 5.) Profile Information 6.) The Characters 7.) Blacklist and Whitelist 8.) Map of Etsuko 9.) Updates

-Rules- 1. This is a LITERATE role-play. Should I spell it out? L-I-T-E-R-A-T-E! Literacy is expected of anyone who joins this role-play. This means that correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation must be used. Nobody simply adores reading something incorrect. Also, if you use stars or dashes for your actions, you will be immediately removed from the role-play. (Translation: Don't do this: -walks in and says hi- hey peeps asl?) 2. Be descriptive, people! It's not a hard thing to do! However, writer's block is part of life, so one-liners are okay every once in a while. 3. DO NOT GODMOD! (Must I really say this?) 4. In order to kill off another character, you must have the person playing the character's permission. Also, notify me before killing the character so I will be able to add on the profile that the character is deceased. 5. Romance is allowed, even encouraged, but for Pete's sake, DO NOT CYBER! Cybering will not be tolerated. If you want to get jiggy with it, go to PM. 6. Spamming will also not be tolerated. Spam and die! 7. This is a medieval fantasy type role-play. I need say nothing more. 8. Multiple characters are allowed, but don't get them mixed up. 9. No bumping! Go bump somwhere else! For example, the chatterbox. 10. Post all profiles in the OoC Thread. If you post your profiles in the RPing thread, you will be flamed and maybe even put onto the blacklist. 11. Don't post anything in the RP thread until you have been accepted and instructed to post. 12. Curse words are a part of reality, but don't go overboard. Your sentence, nor your dialogue, should be a straight stream of curses. If you absolutely must use a stream of curses, do it in third person. (RP Ex: A stream of foul language flowed from his mouth as he stubbed his toe.) 13. I understand that sometimes you may have to take extended absences. Therefore, if you know before hand, please notify me beforehand. However, everyone has emergencies sometimes. If you've been gone extensively without telling beforehand, but you have a good reason, your character will be allowed back into play, but you will have to come up with an event where your character returns. (You know, kind of like how Sherlock Holmes died, but he came back.) However, make sure it's believable. Dont' just say, "I magically evaded the attack and lived and hid away for a long time." Be creative! 14. If you have any questions before or after you send me your profile, please don't pester me with private messages. I dislike logging on only to find my inbox completely full. Please post your questions in the OoC Thread, which is located in a link at the bottom of this post. 15. If you find it imperative to add something in OoC on your post in the RP thread, please do something to differentiate it from character actions. (Ex: ((OoC)) [OoC])
*Note: I will add things as they are needed.
I also understand that people make mistakes and I will compromise if you have an 'oopsy.'

-A History of Etsuko- Etsuko--that was what the continent was finally called by its first inhabitants. However, what were these first inhabitants, anyway? Humans--no! Demons--no! Dwarves--no! Elves--no! Any other race you'd expect--no! All of these different creatures were nowhere in existence when the ancient beings named the continent Etsuko. The beings were the phoenixes.
Yes, the phoenixes. No one quite knows from where they migrated, but there were there. Soon, that was the only region where they could be found.
The phoenixes delighted in the Etsukan landscape. It was full of mountains and lush countrysides. There was even a small desert that allowed them to relax, for, after all, the phoenixes' elemental affinity was fire.
For many years, the phoenixes leaved in peace and harmony, until, inevitably, settlers from distant lands arrived. The phoenixes, being as curious as they were, found themselves interacting with the settlers.
First came the demons, who delighted at the thought of beholding the power of the phoenixes. They even began to interact with them more than any other race would. Their efforts lead to a way to telepathically communicate with them.
Next came the elves, with all their grace and splendor. They, being more in tuned with nature than any other race, found communicating with the phoenixes quite easy. They even began to form pacts with the phoenixes.
Next came the dwarves, with their mining and different sorts of crafting. To describe the phoenixes' reaction very simply, is that they angered them to the extreme of wars between the dwarves and phoenixes. The phoenixes were angered by their uprooting of the land and the dwarves were eventually forced to a small settlement in the northwestern part of the continent. There, they came to an agreement with the phoenixes that stated that they would only mine in their personal settlement. Then, all problems were solved and the dwarves eventually isolated themselves from any other part of the continent.
Then came the humans with their bulky ships and simple, yet unique customs. They were quite fascinated with the phoenixes, but preferred to stay away from them, for the fear of their immense power always stayed in the back of their minds.
Eventually, the communication methods of the demons and the pact traditions of the elves spread through to the humans. The dwarves even joined in on the customs after being isolated for hundreds of years. Everything was peaceful for some time except for the every now and then trivial conflict.
However, the peaceful era of Etsuko didn't last for long. It ended with two simple discoveries that would change the lands forever--the value of the tears and feathers of a phoenix.
The debate on how the discovery of how valuable they were would last forever, for no one is sure how the discovery was made, but once it had been discovered, the word traveled fast. A single feather was worth a large fortune and a single tear would heal any would faster than the most advanced medicine.
And so the peaceful era ended.
Poachers soon set out to hunt down the phoenix for their feathers and tears. Any phoenix who was caught would be plucked and tortured to tears. Their bodies would be thrown aside as if they were nothing but scraps of garbage. Those who opposed such an atrocity endeavoured to end it to save their phoenixes, but to no avail. They eventually became extinct.
The last phoenix sighting was rumored to have been just north of a village on the Southwestern edge of Etsuko...but that was five hundred years ago.

-Prequel Summary- There were no more sightings of phoenixes for five hundred years...until a demon heard a rumor.
Yes, a widespread rumor that phoenix eggs had been found just north of a village ont he Southwestern edge of the Etsukian continent.
Working for a group serving under a half angel, half vampire who wanted to use the phoenixes fofr his own purposes, he, Dax, set out toward the tall tower where the precious artifacts had been hidden away from the public view. He successfully took the eggs and rode and escaped through town on a black horse. However, as he was escaping, a rip in the bottom of the sack holding the eggs apepared in the sack and eventually ripped. Five of the eight eggs fell to the ground and scattered into the crowd, who was in a massive panic by the events that were occurring.
Three of the five eggs that had fallen to the ground were found by individuals who fortunately took them in, but the fourth and fifth rolled out of sight, not found by anyone.
Not noticing that the eggs had fallen through the sack, Dax continued on his way to the forest edge north of town.
In the hands of the individuals who had found them in the crowd, the three eggs hatched, revealing forth the phoenixes Hotaru, Shreya, and Mia.
However, the other four phoenix eggs were given to those who worked for the half vampire, half angel Raziel. Three hatched to bring forth Tee, Maeve, and Kaze. The fourth had yet to hatch. Each of the phoenixes that hatched formed a mental bond with the one who had been there at their birth.
Soon, the two sides conflicted, resulting in a calling of the ancestors and the saying of a terrible prophecy, one of the phoenixes' end. That day, everyone could hear the propecy of the ancient fire bird that came through a tear in time.
~~~ "Now the time has finally come, The final ring of beating drums, The world's day slowly comes to end, It's lands and seas will never mend, The seas will dry with fiery wrath, Prosperity of lands, no one will hath, The darkness then will slowly teem, And war it will surely bring, It will be led by one of holy greed, Who seeks only but reprieve, To restore the power he once had, To use the fire birds will be his plan, The twilight then comes very near, Filling many creatures with anticipated fear, To morning or night or terrible blight, And so the war will end, Revealing morning or night transcend, Either way, imminent doom rests to the phoenix wake, For their lives the war will take, And their race will die again." ~~~
Thus, our story continues two years later...
A soft wind blew through Aiya's long brown hair, and she sighed with quiet contentment as she viewed the purplish-golden sunset. Peace at last... But, she reflected sourly, they had no idea how long that peace would last; Amara was still out there, and then there was that damn prophecy...
You're ruining my dinner, Shreya complained from a few feet away, munching on a beetle. If I get sick later I'll make sure to heave it all up on you.
Oh, shut up, Aiya told her half-heartedly.
Shreya tilted her head back, swallowing the rest of the beetle and eyeing her demon with concern. Will you give it a rest? That time's over. Amara disappeared along with Raziel, and we're together again. That's all that matters.
Yeah, I guess. Aiya smiled. You have such a way of putting things.
Glad to be of help, said Shreya, fluttering to Aiya's shoulder despite the fact that she was twice as big as she had been when she first started doing it. She preened Aiya's hair and said sharply, You're still thinking about it. No matter how much you try to shield your thoughts, I can see everything you see, think everything you think. She shuddered briefly. It affected me as well, Ai. I think about it every night.
Amara suddenly loomed in Aiya's blurry vision, distorted from the fiery pain in her belly. She carried something limp... and red... "Shreya?" Aiya wimpered, trying to struggle upright. Shreya looked about as bad as Aiya felt; her brilliant eyes were dull and unfocused, her feathers lusterless and dirty. "What's wrong with her?" Aiya demanded, forcing herself to stand and stumble forward.
Amara merely backhanded her so that she fell back to the floor and drew her katana, laying Shreya out on a cobwebbed table with her neck outstretched. Maeve peered over Amara's shoulder in fascination and eagerness. She raised her katana, glaring at Aiya with pure hatred. "Watch!" she commanded. "I want to see the pain on your face." She twisted her hand and Aiya writhed in pain as the spell doubled in strength.
Suddenly, a piercing screech cut through the air, and Amara dropped her katana, partly out of surprise and partly out of fear of the strange voice that had suddenly burst into her head. The only voices that Amara allowed in her head were those of Maeve and Raziel, and this unearthly voice was neither of those. Maeve gave a trill of fear, her black beady eyes wide and unblinking as she listened with awe to the words of the great phoenix echo throughout the land.
Aiya took her chance, scooping up Maeve and Shreya, making sure to hold onto Maeve's claws and beak to avoid being gouged. She listened to the prophecy with one ear, but was concentrating on this one advantage that the strange phoenix had provided. "Let us go!" she shouted at Amara over the song of the phoenix, one hand encircling Maeve's slender neck. Amara's eyes widened, confused and afraid by this barrage on her emotions and mind, and she dropped the hand that had been reaching for her katana. Aiya backed towards the window, then flung Maeve to the floor and leapt out of the window with Shreya. Amara gave a cry of rage and pain, scooping up Maeve and hurrying to the window, but the two had disappeared... or so she thought.
One floor below, Aiya had landed on all fours and immediately used her remaining power, camouflaging herself and Shreya. The two crept through the winding halls and fled to the relative safety of the forest, where both collapsed and were found by Shiro when the spell had worn off.
((Is this okay? I tried to do as little godmoding as possible... sweatdrop ))
It had been two years ago to this day when he had felt a tap on his toe in the midst of the chaos that surrounded him back on Etsuko. It was two years ago to this day that he had found crimson, oranged-marked egg on the snow-covered ground--two years since he had named the phoenix inside Hotaru.
It was her second birthday.
"What are you plotting!?" she demanded as he swept away from her into his small cabin back on Akiko.
"Just stay outside for a minute," her replied, covering something with a blanket.
Outside the door, he heard a beautiful squawk of protest. "Hurry up, already! I'm freezing my tailfeathers off out here!"
Making an effort to hurry his endeavours, he brought forth a dish of different fruits arranged in a glorious design; most of the dish was covered in mangos, Hotaru's favorite food. There were several impatient clicking noises on the other side of the door now.
He couldn't help but remember Hotaru's birthday last year. He had forgotten and she had been furious. She severed their telepathical connection for over a week. On the eighth day of their discommunication, she finally allowed communication and he begged for her pardon.
Shiro sighed and winced as he heard the door splinter under Hotaru's sharp beak and ran over to the door. "Okay, okay, I'm coming!" he said aloud, forgetting about the telepathic connection once again.
As he opened the door, she swooped in and landed on the bedpost, where she preferred to rest since he wood it was made of was 'agreeable' as she said. She peered around the room and then at the platter on the table. She chirped happily and swooped down onto the table and gulped down one of the mangos.
"So you remembered this year," she said with a chuckle.
"How could I forget? I have a scar on my left middle finger from the last time I forgot," he replied, sitting at the table and claiming a strawberry for himself.
He got the impression that she was forcing herself to keep from saying 'Is this all?' since he could feel fragments of her feelings seeping across the link.
"Now, for your present," he said and looked over to what he had covered with a sheet earlier.
"Where've you been hiding that?" she asked and gulped a grape on the edge of the platter. "Your thoughts are mine. How could I have missed it?"
"Hah! I know you better than anyone! I just had to store that information in another series of memories that you'd never search."
"And where might that be?"
"I'm not telling you," he said and laughed.
"Never matter, now show me what it is!" she exclaimed, plucking at her crimson stomach feathers testily.
Shiro stood and, instead of taking the blanket off immediately, placed a hand over it. A bright green aura permeated through the blanket and there was a slight movement from within it. Then, he jerked off the blanket and a silver version of Hotaru leapt from a podium and flew across the room. It was his best work with mythrilclaiming. A scale version of Hotaru made of mythril landed next to the original on the table and eyed her with emerald eyes. It opened its mouth with a silent chirp and flew back to the podium and became still.
Hotaru's obvious delight seeped across the mental link. "You must have worked hard on that," she observed as he sat back down in the chair.
"Yes, and it was very hard to keep hidden from you thoughout the period in which I was making it since you get into everything. Cabinets, drawers, boxes--nothing stops your curiosity."
Hotaru waddled over to Shiro and pinched his nose with her beak affectionately. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome," he replied, stroking her crimson head.
"We're returning back ot Etsuko tomorrow, yes?"
The randomness of the question struck him off guard. "Yes, but how did you know?"
"You were keeping it a secret from me. Why?"
Shiro knew she already knew. "I thought you might resent it because of the prophecy," he replied.
"We would be returning eventually."
Shiro shook his head and sighed. "This is your birthday. We shouldn't be worrying about things like this!"
"You're avoiding the subject, but I guess you're right," she said in a matter-of-factly tone.
"I am not! We really should, you know. Your birthday is supposed to be a happy day!"
((My post isn't as long as yours since I don't have a phoenix))
As the wind blowed through, a shadow, unlike any other shadow had appeared as someone started to run out of it. Running... Running as if your afraid of everything that is chasing you, but nothing is chasing you.. All it is, is yourself.. Running... The person seemed to be searching, but for what? A place to call home? A friend? Someone who she could call family? Or was the thing she was searching for was her desire to steal something precious? Although the things that were precious were usually made by things around them. Who was this person running? What is the thing they are searching for? What do they want? Why are they here? So many questions that are wanting an anwser but all that was in action was running.
Yoshiko ran as her heart beated rapidly she needed to find what she wanted. She wanted everything that she wanted and usually she would get it, although if she wanted the most unbelievable thing it sure wouldn't come. Her brother? What about her brother..? Would she truly want her brother to come back? Yes.. What if it actually happened? Again, so many questions but just little actions.
"I need to find it.." She mummbled as she ran. She had a sudden stop as her hands flew out to her knees and she bent over to pant. "huff, huff, how can looking for this thing be so hard to find?" She then swallowed as her throat and mouth were dry.
She continued to run as she searched she thought more and more about everything around her, it seemed that it was changing to different beauty's. She stopped again as she started to walk so she could admire the beauty around her. She knew she would find it soon but when? When would she find what she was looking for? If she finally found it what plan would take her in lead? A plan... A plan smart enough to trick the one with the phoenix.. But all she knew was that she can't get thrown back and become good friends with them and end up not finishing her task. It was all up to what was going to happen.. The future...
She thought deeply about everything and a right plan to follow for a long while. It seemed like the only thing to do as she was walking and searching for them.
I wonder... What will happen..? What will happen if I get a phoenix? Will I ever get anything special or precious? Precious... Gold, Silver, Diamonds, Money, Food, Home, Friends, Family. Wait who needs a home, friends, or family? Do I really need them? Are they more important than gold and silver? Jewels and diamonds? Emeralds and pearls?
She continued to think as she looked down at her pendent with wonder. She stood straight as she picked her hand up from her side and grabbed the pendent that layed a bit higher to her chest. She looked down at it and examined it.
Malice? Why is this so important? How can it be so important..? Why are all theses questions coming to my head?
She let the pendent down as she looked up at the sky and at the shadow of a large building. She ran straight into the shadow but it if a normal person did the same thing she did they would maybe just end up right into the wall, but it depended on if they had the power to control shadows.
((Is that good?))
Laying back lazilly in a tree, the winds played with Matthew's silver bangs as he slept. Pondering at the meaning of the prophecy even his in his sleep, he murmered sleepily in his slumber. Perhaps there's a hidden clause... Whoever was speaking might have left out some vital piece of information...
Opening his eyes slowly underneath a black mask, he didn't move from his spot, comfortable up in the massive tree. "What are the people missing... What am I missing?" Looking down at the grassy paths below, he gave a slow sigh. Flicking his tail around, he rubbed the fuzzy appendage against his face, whilst his hands and arms stretched away the talons of sleep and stiff muscles. Another day, another opputunity to search... It's time to make a run to town...
Grasping his bow, he slid out of the tree, landing on the soft ground twenty feet below with a slight bounce. Shaking out his silver hair, he slid his mask off to rub sleep from his eyes, his feet mechanically following the paths that were burned into his mind.
The two of them were silent for a while, just content to sit back and watch the sun die once again, as it had done for thousands and thousands of years.
Hey Ai... Shreya peered up at Aiya. Have you heard from Shiro and Hotaru lately?
What's that supposed to mean? Aiya asked lazily. You know I haven't heard anything from them since they left Etsuko. And stop trying to hook me up with Shiro, Shreya. It's getting annoying.
Shreya sighed. It's just... Shikyo and Jade have been gone for a while, too... there's none of my own kind around. You, of all people, should understand.
Aiya stiffened at this blatant slap in the face. That's none of your business. Getting up abruptly, she wheeled around stormed into her grungy apartment building, slamming the door behind her and severing contact between the two of them.
Strolling into town, his icey blue eyes scanning the surrounding area, Matthew was slightly put off at how empty the place looked compared to other places. Heading towards a shop, he stopped in to buy some things to keep him going out into the woods, flicking the shop keeper a few extra coins as thanks for the good service.
Slinging a small haversack across his shoulder, his other hand vanished underneath his cloak to wrap loosely around the hilt of his longsword. Catching odd scents on the breeze, two wolvish ears perked up off of his head, scanning for sound like satellites. Something's not right... Dropping his haversack, his longsword cleared its scabbard with a glorious ring as the bag hit the ground with a dull thump. It's too quiet... There's not a single breath on the wind...
