It was as tempered as a passing breeze, more subtle then the lightest colored storm cloud in the sky, and yet it came from the charred lips of the only female in Marley’s unknown litter...
Her voice would never match her gruff appearance; it wasn't an opinion so much as just fact. It would never make up for the lack of heart she had, nor would such a sweet tone draw the attention of boys or men alike (The only creature who had ever mentioned what a lovely voice came from such a lovely face had to be the creepy little brother she travelled with). Even she could not stand the sound of it...yet she did not move to make a change.
Why? Little Auggie figured that the more out-of-character antics she pulled the better her chance to manipulate would be. Without that strength to pull and push others into directions she chose, whether it be through force or persuasion, there would not be a whole lot to Aug'Hbar worth mentioning...
Of course, her major flaw was most often found in that same, creepy brother of hers...In the midst of an early morning swim, the female glanced to her right to see the cream, boorish male seated off-center on the bank. His eyes were fixed on the mountains, which were farther north then the two planned on travelling, and in his seat he released a series of sighs and groans. What usually worried Aug'Hbar the most about Kriemhild was an ever-present stillness about his company...even when he spoke did she have to tell herself that yes, his lips had moved.
"What is it?" she remarked bluntly, crawling from the water as if preparing to attack. But the male did not respond. He did not seem bothered by his sisters size, weight, or aggressive approach. Instead he lifted a single paw and pointed it toward the mountains before releasing a whine.
Auggie felt her face heat up with frustration. Usually, this meant he wanted to go somewhere and, seeing as she was the largest and strongest, it would be her job to go and investigate that 'where'.
Sure at times she felt a bit controlled, especially when Kriemhild refused to talk and instead silently made orders for her to follow, but the dependency he felt for his sister gave Aug'Hbar purpose; and that alone also gave her a false sense of control...THAT was one of her many faults. "Over there?" She finally whispered, and to this the male gave her a quick nod. "Over there..." his reply was smooth with but a hint of uncertainty that shook the piece around his neck.
She hesitated to leave her place, shaking off the water several times before growling. If it meant adventure, if it meant danger, and if it meant a new source of food for herself, then so she would go and investigate. Usually Kreimhilds desires did not often come without some benefit to his sibling. "Fine. Stay here. Do not move..."
Kriemhild grinned, eyes batting while his tongue poked out between his lips. "Thanks." He murmured, watching as his sister crept into the growth of the forest. She would return later he assumed...he hoped. Until then he would do as she said and not move a muscle...he knew what it was Auggie liked.

Rock had found the bridge relatively easily. The new mushroom had told him riiiight where it was as it slid down his throat to nest in his belly for a few hours. Now as he traveled, the tiny spore sang happy tunes in his ears, keeping him company. Next to his tail, which was particularly pink and fluffy today if he did say so himself, and he did, the mushroom was his favorite thing ever. How wonderful.
Crossing the fallen tree that served as a bridge to those wiley pups willing to leave the pack's boundaries was easy - much against his parents' knowledge. At the center point of the long-dead tree, Rock wriggled a bit, scraping his claws against the tree's smoothed surface. He turned slightly, looking down into the river. It wouldn't be good if he fell in. He wasn't even sure how to go about swimming, or if the notion of floating atop the water was possible.
After a moment's pondering, he continued on, successfully exiting the packlands in which he was born and sort-of raised. He was maybe still a bit young to be out and about alone, but figured there was no harm in sniffing about for a while. And besides, he wasn't truly alone - his mushroom friend was alwaaaays there!
He looked back once, cementing the way into his catalog. He would eventually wish to come back, he did like his big family, they were really cool even though they didn't really understand him. Ohwell. The pink and brown male wove his way through the bushes, disappearing into the dark underbrush with a final flick of his fluffy tail.

"Yeah, yeah." Aug'Hbar snarled as the distance between herself and Kriemhild grew. Ugh...Sometimes the girl could do without her awkward brother! He was embarrassing and flat out weird; he gave off the strangest vibes and could raise the hairs on any neck with but a suggestive look or a wrinkle of his snout. It even got to the point where Auggie had to battle her own subconscious from time to time, one that surprisingly suggested pushing him into a river and mistaking his head for a stepping stone.
It was a force of habit to feel hate toward anything but power, and with Kriemhild she rarely felt in control...
Her thoughts were jumbled but they never seemed to deter her from what goal had been set. Aug'Hbar came across the pup by accident, having only heard the scuffle with a fallen tree moments before all but snapping her neck in surprise. The female hadn't expected to meet another wolf so soon, not when she only just left Kriem moments ago...But she kept her cool, or at least the facade that refused to budge. Her initial thought was to purpose a question. She figured being brash would get the point across that she was not in any mood to fight or make friends--but while she pondered what to say, words so out of character slipped out one by one.
"Oh, hello." Her voice was strong and sweet all at once. It was as beautiful as any voice could be, but as always she frowned and her frame rose to hunch somewhat in place...No genetic defect (or for some, 'blessing') would leave Auggie looking like a petty girl. One brow rose on that red face of hers questioning the male whose face drooped in an unnatural, far too relaxed fashion. "What are you doing here?"

Rock sniffed the pup out before he saw her, with the help of his friendly fungus. He ran up on her quite by accident, not thinking he would meet anyone out here. But he did realize that these weren't his lands, they were the free lands that his parents had told him about. They had jived on about bad wolves looking for a fight. Well, so far, Rock was still alive.
"Wooooah! You look soo cool, dudette!" he exclaimed, never realizing what a huge range of colors and IDs wolves could have. His pack was very plain, his mother, himself, and his sisters being the exception, never the rule. He wondered if maybe it had been a fluke, but his father wasn't talking, and his mother was forever agitated so that he never ever spoke to her unless forced to. But these were happy times, he reminded himself.
The mushroom rolled in the opposite direction now, and he could see it glowing when he looked down at himself, tipping his head nearly upside down. He wondered briefly if she could see it too. He wondered also if she might be interesting in seeing it... or maybe making a friend of her own. Though out here, he wouldn't know where he might find another tiny city of mushrooms.
He batted his eyes slowly as she spoke to him, her words washing over him in comforting waves. "Ooooo" he cooed, a placid smile on his face. "I'm just chillin' out, seein' the sights." his maw quirked in a smile. "You, my friend?"

Auggie stiffened a bit when the boy spoke, eyes lingering on the top of his head while (what looked like) an inspection took place. He didn't seem troubled, although she assumed he was. Not ill by no means...perhaps he looked--distant. That sounded right, and was about as spot on as she could describe.
Aug'Hbar released a stern sigh, thrown by the puppies interesting approach and yet not thrown far enough to forget her place; her high place, way above this creature. Both ears moved to catch his phrases and slurs, her prominent nose moist and flared to keep his scent fresh and memorable.
The female grinned then, ear to ear as the boy responded and prompted her with a follow-up inquiry. In the same sort of curiosity the male had about whether or not she could see his mushroom, Auggie pondered for a moment if he could read her thoughts...and know that only SHE would be asking the questions. Her jaw released its tension for speech, but that same tension only transferred to other parts of her body; for example, the strong display of dominance that was her flagged tail.
"What sights are there to be seen? Are you from these parts?"

The male paused a moment, considering why this pup might be so uptight. With a little chuckle he answered her. "I dunno yet! But I hear there's a groovy bunch of stuff to be seen out here, you know?" his lip quirked into a crooked grin. "I'm from... over there." he swung his head back over his left shoulder, indicating that he had indeed come from where he had just been.
"What about you, dudette, where do you come from?" He knew she wasn't from his pack. His pack was dry and desolate when it came to pups to play with. If there had been a whole other family of pups on the packlands, he would have sniffed them out already, for sure.
As he pondered, he heard the musical stylings of his current mushroom whispering in his ear, playing tiny drums made of deer hide. It was all very soothing and magical, he could almost close his eyes and drift to sleep if his paws didn't feel so chilled out. The mushroom had developed thick messy braids, like that of Auggie.
"You really should hear this, it's groooovy." his eyes closed and reopened very slowly as he spoke.

Groovy? It hadn't occurred to her that there were several types of 'strange' out there in the world. Her brother was one case, a crippled case--one that needed serious watching. She always thought that HE was the only one of his kind...but this pups problem seemed entirely different! He was someone who Aug'Hbar felt she wouldn't have to watch over constantly. Why, he came from some ways on the path before her so his desires for travel were apparently not hindered by family or territory...she thought to herself, relinquishing an 'Mmm' to justify her prolonged silence. As her eyes narrowed, the young female felt inclined to answer his questions in the end.
"I'm from back there." With a smooth tilt of her head, she mimicked the boys previous gesture by glancing over her shoulder. A smile played on her lips, ideas springing to life, but of course the excitement remained a well-kept secret; this girl was no new-born, she knew not to rile up too much suspicion all at once. Auggie chose to ignore his statement about sounds she should 'hear' as well but twitched her ear some what out of curiosity.
"What is your name? And how far is 'over there' hmm?"

Rock bobbed his head and flicked his ears in time with the tiny musical sounds as Auggie processed his offering to her. He really did hope she would agree, but on the other paw, maybe not. He didn't want to happen to her what had happened to his sister not so long ago. That had been frightening, and had happened almost right after his OTHER sister had been attacked by sparks from the very sky.
The pup tried not to ponder too long on these things, because they frightened him, and made him want to cry. They also killed his high fast, and he struggled now to keep his eyes on the mushroom he had in his gut. After being distracted by that for a moment, Auggie spoke again. Rock smiled with her answer, it being so similar to his own, and hoped he had maybe found a friend, a kindred spirit.
"I'm Rock!" he squeaked happily, debating whether to ask her name first and then tell her how far, or tell her how far and then ask her name. In the end, the name question won out. "What's yours?" he asked, and then "Not far, I don't feel."

It was just like her to wrinkle that oblong face when the boy spoke his name, churning the information 'round and 'round trying to make some sense of it. "Rock?" She repeated promptly, a hint of bewilderment intertwined with disbelief seeping from even the droop of her jowls. Was this boy a pacifist? Was she going to be introduced to other free-roaming nature tots and toddlers who would try to cover her in flowers and leaves?
"A name says a lot about ones character, Rock." Eyes of gold searched the soil beneath her feet where stones, of varying shapes and colors, were scattered and submerged beneath the surface. They were dumb things, lifeless and immobile...but fascinating to look at, if one fancied nature and all of that hippie nonsense. Auggie's statement was meant to sound harsh, and for the girl it WAS brash and uncalled for in the best way, but upon further thought it seemed to take a rather kindly turn. He WAS an interesting little thing with long hair and hazy eyes. He HAD a way about his words and movements that kept the female entertained...
Aug'Hbar would never admit it, and even in her own mind did she find reason to snarl and scoff at the ponderings that popped into existence...but it stood true nonetheless; Rock was fascinating. So easy to please it would seem...he proved to be useful more and more.
Turning her head to the side but keeping a wild eye on the boy, she replied. "Call me Aug'Hbar...I won't be running into any more of your kind will I? I'm not in the mood for a fight." Which was a lie since Auggie was always ready and willing to scuffle.

Rock smiled brightly at her comment, though he wondered about it briefly. Why had he been named for the hard, harsh and unmalleable rocks that littered the earth? Had it been an insult to him or his character? He had yet to hear the phrase "dumb as a rock", so he didn't even think to wonder if his parents had thought him stupid.
"Maybe." he allowed, stilling his body finally. It was strange, that his moods were so shifty, but he realized it was probably just the mushrooms.
"Aug'Hbar..." he repeated, just as she had with his name. He wondered if it meant anything, wondered if she even knew. "What does it mean?"
"And... fight?" he pondered, thinking on his family makeup and who might be up for a fight with a puppy. Jani, definitely. "No, none of them leave the pack." he admitted, realizing once again that he was very different.

"We will see." Auggie murmured, features lighting up with malice. But the look dissipated into a challenging glance with haste, his follow-up inquiries one that peaked even her interest. Whatever her name meant she sure as hell didn't know, however if it meant anything at all she assumed it would be this. Straightening up with ears poised tall, her voice roared with haughty intent:
"Aug'Hbar means strong, powerful, and almighty. Light on the feet and quick tongued; quick EVERYTHING actually. My mother might not have been the fiercest looking wolf around but she was smart to dub me so."
"And...that's good." In regard to his family, the girl left it at that. "Does that mean you're not allowed to be out here all alone then?

The pup nodded in agreement. They would see, but that was what life was about. Seeing how things turned out, right?
Rock sat back and watched as Aug'Hbar straightened herself and began to almost chant out what her name meant. How interesting! His eyes lit up with curiosity as she spoke, and he wished that his mother had maybe named him something more respectable.
He wasn't harsh, but he did think of himself as unyielding.
"Cooool..." he whispered when she was done, his tail wriggling behind him to support the emotion behind the word. "Um." he smirked at her question, finally.
"Probably not, but they don't miss me when I wander." he stated with a shrug of his small shoulders. What was there to miss? He really did wonder sometimes.

It was funny at first, charming even. Aug’Hbar watched his motions carefully and noted the empty look that crossed his face and the way those eyes rolled about somewhat, from time to time, with little control. The pup did not favor company such as his often, but he seemed profitable in the long run; she figured a friendship here might aid in future plans…whatever plans she might conjure up.
But enough was enough.
She had humored his odd speech for much longer then would be expected of the girl, lips peeling somewhat in distaste for his final remark. “Cool?” Her words were sharp, tongue flicking out like that of a snake. She expected respect from others, and tarnishing her name with a comment such as his…regarding it as ‘cool’? That would not fly with the female. “My name is more than just cool. Why on Earth do you speak like such a dimwit? I do not even know why I am worried! Your family, they are all probably a bunch of oddballs like yourself staggering around blissfully unaware of what dangers lurk beneath the pretty pink surface of life.” It had obviously struck a chord in the pup that would have otherwise gone unnoticed if she were a smidge less irritable, but it was Auggie; she was incapable of such things as ‘tolerance’ for too long. “Nature frowns on your kind of wolf, I would be wary about your expeditions out and about, Rock. You would not want to be caught in the crossfire of fate, not at such a young age.” With that she rose to her hind feet and glowered, gritting her teeth consciously.
“But that's why I am here. I like you.” She came to, finally, an ear flicking as if to solidify the statement. It seemed a change had gone on within her, one that Rock might not notice at first. “Perhaps more then I should having just met you, but you’re an idiot for leaving home so early. You are still dependant on your mother, your father, and your siblings. You should go back to them and learn whatever lessons are left for you to learn before running amuck. I would hate to see another female snatch you up before I had the chance to…”
With that her lips peeled yet again, this time to offer a very different gesture—but one that lacked a genuine luster all the same.
