One or both of my rats always seem to have blood above and below their nostrils.

There is also usually lots of blood spotted on the inside of the carboard boxes I put in their cage.

I have assumed it is just from them fighting, but they don't fight that often and them amount seems odd.

Is this a cause for concern?

Are you sure that it's not just porphyrin ?
It's a red blood-like mucus that some/ a good bit of rats excrete .
It can be cause by humidity / a cold / and other minor things.

Though if it actually is blood , I highly advise going to the Vet .
None of my rats have ever bled from the nose and my friends rat that was bleeding from the nose had a stomach ulcer . ><

To be honest I had never heard of such a thing. That could well be what it is. There isn't an awful lot of it on their noses and it isn't always there, if I were to take a photo, I doubt it would show up. What there is of on the inside of their boxes seems to have been watery.

I take it I have no reason to worry then if it is this prophyrin?

Thank you for responding and putting my mind at ease smile

Yep I would think that that is what it is if it's not always there .
And if it really is blood then it could just be a nosebleed from high humidity or really dry air . { Which can easily be prevented with a cheap humidifier . }

Nope no reason to worry about prophyrin , 99% or rats develop it a few times in their life .

And you're welcome , always glad to help .

Rats also get respiratory infection very easily and is very common. Unfortunately, some rats survive and others do not. I would see if they are having any other symptoms because, like I said, it is very common and other than cancer, this is the second most common way rats die.

It could be that everything is alright, I am just putting it out there. My friend said thats what happened to his rat. He was getting nose bleeds. and had a respiratory infection.
