The Yard

Is well kept with manicured lawns, gardens,
small looking pond, and some trees.
The grass is the greenest and softest imaginable.
There are a few willow trees here and there.
In the not far of distance you can
make out a suspicious looking forest.

Jensen wasn’t sure how long she’d been lying down and looking through the branches at the strange sky. Minutes, hours, she just didn’t know, nor did she particularly care. Something was not right and she was determined not to move until she figured it out. She tried to concentrate but it was so hard when everything about this strange place kept distracting her. Everything was new and different and, well, spectacular. The plush feel of the grass, the way the color of the sky seemed to fluctuate between shades of blue and pale lavender, the sound of the light breeze through the vines of the…That’s it! she thought bolting upright so fast it made her a little light headed. “I can hear,” she whispered, fighting back the urge to cry. Her mind flashed back to that horrid day when she was almost 13 and her foster father, drunk as usual, had decided to take a broken plate out on her. She willingly took the beating so that the younger child who’d really broken it wouldn’t have to, she’d done it plenty of times before, but this time it cost her most of her hearing. This is incredible. This has to be the best dream yet! Slowly she stood up to get a better look around. Behind her was a giant house, its grounds so perfect she longed for her camera to capture it. I hope I remember this place when I wake up… Well I suppose I should see if anyone’s home. And with that thought she slowly crossed the yard and knocked on the doors.
