Just to get one thing clear: Husker Du is a melodic hardcore band... not an emocore band! Listen to some of the songs in the Metal Circus EP and "Everything Falls Apart And More" (I think the original release was just called 'Everything Falls Apart') and you'll soon agree that the vast majority of Husker Du is Melodic Hardcore.
Most people who have told me that Husker Du is an emo band seem to have mainly/only just listend to Zen Arcade. Well whoop-dee-doo, so what if they've got an acoustic track on there? Husker Du existed before the underground movement of emocore in the mid-80s, they certainly influenced/inspired some emocore bands later in their career but they aren't emo themselves. Granted I'll accept Zen Arcade as perhaps a proto-emo album... but not emo.
There comes a time for every great artist(s) to create an awesome album to just exhaust all their emotional energy and frustration, and Zen Arcade is just that! It swarms with the theme of social alienation (as many hardcore bands do) and is simply something that will agitate you above and beyond your emotional threshold, but not without relieving it all out in the end. Perhaps it was because the members were gay? I don't know... though I wouldn't be surprised if they recieved their fair share of social rejection (and it was the 80s, less accepting of homos then I'd imagine), but regardless, you certainly don't need to be gay to feel the awesome vibes of this album. Zen Arcade isn't an album that you need to deeply analyse to appreciate, the explosive vocals and instrumental melody just gives you that automatically!

Husker Du is awesome. I have still yet to hear one of their songs that I don't like. Two of my favorite albums from them are Zen Arcade and Candy Apple Grey. Good stuff.

Well they're later stuff swerved into some pop-rockish kind of stuff but I enjoyed them nevertheless. Yeah you're absolutely right, Haven't yet heard a song from them that I actually don't like.

Yea, it was good to see how they were able to evolve their sound, and yet still stay as good as they were before.

Zen Arcade... if you can get a hold on it... I heard its quite rare now. But New Day Rising is a pretty good start. Though beware, I don't think their older stuff are remastered...

It depends where you look. Where I live I'm probably the only one to hear about Husker Du but when I went to Vancouver they had 6 copies of Zen Arcade lying around in HMV. I like how 2/3 of the members were gay but they could still write a song about raping women with the best of them. Also if you haven't heard their cover of "Eight Miles High" you're missing out.

Believe it or not I actually didn't know they were gay when I first got into them, I mean they did make references to 'she' in a number of their love songs. After a while I found out that Bob and Grant were gay, then someone told me Greg was gay too! But yeah, I actually had to order an import to get my Zen Arcade. Most of the others were easy to find.

I don't think anyone really expects anyone in the Hardcore community to be gay. I think the singer of Stay Gold is gay or I misheard what he was singing.
