So I went and saw Scott Pilgrim with the girlfriend on Saturday. Here's what I thought of it:

It is definitely a movie that you will either love to pieces, or hate to death. There really isn't too much middle ground on this one. If you think you'll enjoy watching it, then go see it; it is worth the watch. If you think you'll hate it, save your money for a different movie.

So for those of you who don't already know, the movie is based on the graphic novel (fixed by Kevin) of the same name. The story centers around (who else?) Scott Pilgrim, a 20-something guy in a band called the Sex Bob-Ombs (they spelled Bom-omb wrong, though...but that's a gripe for another time). He's a pretty dull guy who tends to play it safe due to a nasty break-up, so at the beginning of the movie, he is dating a 17-year-old chinese high schooler, who, being at that age, falls in love with his band. Sure enough, along comes Ramona Flowers (also fixed by Kevin), who is pretty much a cool customer. Scott chats her up at a party, embarrasses himself, and meets with her again...through ordering something off the internet...or something.

Anywho, long story short, they hook up...then s**t hits the fan when some of her exes (they specifically say that too) come into town to ******** him up big time, so he's gotta fight these guys off to win her heart...or...something.

Personally, I thought it was decent and entertaining. Not one of my favorite movies, but still fun to watch anyway. If you watched Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, its the same director.

Just for the record, they didn't spell Bob-omb wrong...wikipedia'd that s**t just to be sure. 3nodding

As for the movie, I liked it. It was very long, but it had a lot of ground to cover. I think I would have preferred a series of movies as opposed to one really long one, but I can always just pick up the graphic novel sometime. I still don't like Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim...he's too scrawny considering Scott is supposed to be a pretty decent fighter...but at least he didn't come off as overly whiny like I thought he would be (he does whine a lot still, but not to the point where I can't watch the movie).

Best character out of the movie was Wallace. It's nice to see a gay character that isn't ridiculously flamboyant and girly (I could see Wallace calling Sex and the City gay). He's just so casual and nonchalant about his homosexuality that you almost have to like him.

The fight scenes were great...with exception to the twin fight. They really got no justice in this movie.

But yeah, definitely worth the watch (although, it's now been replaced as my pick for movie of the summer...just saw the Last Exorcism).

...Really? I always thought it was Bom-omb. DAMN YOU, NINTENDO! YOU LIED TO ME! LIIIIIIEEEEEED!!!

I haven't read the graphic novels yet to really gauge how actors did in their roles, but I think despite being scrawny, Cera did a decent job as Pilgrim. The one thing that confused me the entire movie: how did he manage to get so decent at fighting? Was it from playing the ninja arcade game on a daily basis, or...I dunno; it confused the hell out of me.

I'm glad they went in that direction for Wallace. Too often do I see the flamboyant gay guy that people start to forget that there are gay people who don't act that way. Also, I find it awesome that his being gay doesn't define his character; Wallace has plenty of depth to him, going from a*****e to actually helpful in the film.

The fight scenes...I know the movie is centered around those, but apart from the visual effects...to be honest, I wasn't really impressed by any of them. They were good, don't get me wrong, but I could definitely see where they could have either improved or extended the fight to make it look less cookie-cutter. Maybe its just me...

I had low expectations to begin with (s**t...it's Michael Cera...could you blame me?), so that's one of the reasons why I liked the fight scenes. They were visually appealing, and they didn't do that jumpy "let's shake the camera so you can't tell what's going on" thing...so that was nice. True, there have been better fight scenes, but these weren't terrible.

As for how Scott got so strong...I don't believe it's ever explained. Crazy s**t happens in the graphic novel, and they're very nonchalant about everything. To get Kim to jdate him (and join his band), Scott went and beat up an entire school (she had been kidnapped by that school). People have superpowers, and everyone just readily accepts it. It's just a part of the world. Anything can happen and no one is shocked by anything really...which is one of the reasons I think the graphic novel was so popular.

The whole reason why I wanted to avoid watching it was because of Michael Cera. But as I saw the previews, I couldn't really think of anyone else to fill those shoes...maybe the lead guy from Zombieland...

There are plenty of guys who could play a decent Scott Pilgrim opposed to Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland). Hell, Scott Pilgrim is just a more awesome Peter Parker really, so anyone who'd make a good PP would make an epic SP...like Topher Grace...although, he's too old now to be Scott (though, he'd make a much better Peter). Chris Pine (Kirk from the new Star Trek) would have been a decent choice.

Although, I have to say that even though I was hesitant when I saw Cera playing Pilgrim in the trailers...they did an animated skit for one of the deleted scenes, and Cera definitely nailed Pilgrim in the voice acting.
