Unicorns are are legendary steeds of purity! They are forest dwellers, and according to legend will only come up to those who are pure of heart and soul, usually a virgin maiden. Your job is to find out anything you can about Unicorns! Thanks, and have fun, kagome_roker,Katie

*I want to start by saying that Unicorns are my absolute favorite creature! (I say this as opposed to faeries, because to me Fae are not creatures, they are people)*
The unicorn is a legendary creature like a horse, but with a slender, usually spiral, horn growing out of its forehead. The popular image of the unicorn is that of a white horse differing only in the horn.
In medieval lore, the spiraled horn of the unicorns was called the alicorn, and was thought to neutralize poisons. In popular mythology, unicorns were hunted for their horns, which were said to protect one against diseases, or, if made into a cup, would protect one form any poison that might have been added to one's drink.
Traditionally, the unicorn had a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hoofs. Ironically, this perception was more realistic, as only cloven-hoofed animals have horns. Unicorns were once thought of as nasty, easily provoked creatures, unlike the gentle perception we have of them today.
A widespread legend is that, when Noah gathered two of every kind of animal, he neglected to gather the unicorns, which is why they do not exist today.
In Chinese mythology, the Unicorn was an animal of good omen that came to humans only on important missions. Its appearance was interpreted as a sign of good times, and the fact that it has not been seen in many centuries suggests that we are living in "bad" times. It will appear once again when the time is right and when goodness reigns.
During the middle ages, a fable was told that although the Unicorn was impossible to hunt down, it was so impressed by the presence of a lovely virgin that it would run up to her and submissively lay its head in her lap. Legends that spread throughout Europe stated that it was impossible to catch a Unicorn by force. The only way to capture one was for a maiden to wait alone where Unicorns were known to be found. When he saw the maiden, the Unicorn would run up and lay its head in her lap - at which point it could be easily taken by the hunters hiding nearby.
It should also be noted that unicorns do not have wings. While many artists depict winged unicorns or similar white winged horse-like creatures, they are actually Pegasus.

Unicorns are my favorite creature too!! And for basically the same reason as Kyrellyan as to why fae aren't.
I don't think there is much to add to it other than the harry potter myth about drinking the blood of a unicorn gives you a half life.
Unicorns are also said to be the stead to the fae. I have an amazing collection of unicorn and Pegasus figurines. My mom has been buying them for me since I was young, some girls collected porcelain dolls I collected unicorn figurines and jewelry.
As a last little blurb the last unicorn is a great movie with a great song.
The last Unicorn When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn
When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn In the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn
I'm alive, I'm alive
When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn Look and see her how she sparkles, it's the last unicorn
I'm alive, I'm alive

I believe I saw one many years ago when I was a young girl. But it's hard to say as I didn't see it clearly. I just saw a shadow image. It wasn't physical, just a spirit at the edge of the woods near my home.
I believe that they are very real but that in the physical world they have been extinct for hundreds of years. I believe they were hunted to extinction by man. but their spirits still exist for those both pure of heart and sensitive to the spirit world.
