that none of his episodes leaves Earth's orbit? There are a couple of scenes in Boomtown clearly stating that he has visited other planets with Rose and Jack, and at the end of the episode they head off to Raxikorikophalapretorious (can't be bothered to look up the actual spelling to that ridiculously long word) but you never actually see any of that in the show. All of the episodes are either on Earth or on some form of space station very near by. You never get to see him take his companions to another planet.

You have a point.
I was going to say that The Doctor took Rose to New Earth, which was a different planet, but that was Ten, not Nine.
Raxicoricofallapatorious is my guess.

My guess this is due to budget. Series 1 didn't have nearly the same budget as Series 2-4 and Series 5 is just epic.

In the modern series there is more of a demand for highly programmed effects and realistic costumes because people had seen such things on other shows. And there might be less money because they had to start without much money from merchandise.

(All series 2, why do I pull to show the difference of budgeting.) They where very out there. They had a lot of budgeting and complex things where as Series 1 used lots of actual locations. They had very few actual scenes that where extravagant. Well unless Moffat was involved but Moffat has the power to take a low budget and make it amazing. Then again I love Moffat.

You can do an alein planet episode with a low budget. Just keep the costumes fairly simple. It's like they blew thier entire creature budget for the season on The End of the World
