The Grinder Trailer

So, The Grinder. Originally a Wii-exclusive; now a multi-plat title. This here is footage from the Wii version, which is going to be an FPS. From the looks of the trailer though, perhaps it can be played as a TPS? The PS3/360 version will be a top-down shooter. Game is set in an alternate universe where zombies, werewolves, and vampires run amok. You control one of four characters, each with their own unique ability as they attempt to exterminate the threat and find the source of the outbreak. As you can see, this looks pretty sick. I'm interested in seeing the differences in the two versions. But yeah, it's supposed to drop Halloween '11. So Wii owners, be on the lookout.

Wow, way to cheap out on the PS3/360 version. It might as well have stayed a Wii exclusive.

There's an interesting video editorial on Escapist, talking about what happened to Survival Horror, and he makes a good point, "Just because you got boogeymen and skeletons in there, doesn't necessarily make it a 'horror' game."
And I dunno about the grinder either. I mean if you ask me, any game that's a First Person Shooter is already not a survival horror title. But I have yet to play an FPS that actually scares me.
Still, he brought up an interesting point, that we're closer to meeting horror elements in RPGs such as "Demon's Souls" than these Action Adventure titles.

The whole thing is right here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/1933-Where-Did-Survival-Horror-Go

In any case, the Wii version of The Grinder could be if nothing else, a decent FPS along the likes of "Clive Barker's Undying". But the PS3 and 360 versions really seem pointless. I mean, there's already a dozen titles just like this on the PSN/Live Arcade. And each one is equally entertaining for all of ten minutes.

Well... it's usually the other way around, so lets let the Wii have its day. xD

Pretty good video there. I posted this before in the RE guild, but again, you should read this: History of Survival Horror Even though it's IGN, this is a really good article, and the guy knows his s**t.

Anyway, I'd consider anything with a horror atmosphere or enemies a horror game. Survival Horror, well, that's another story.

Demon's Souls, aww christ. ******** that game. Didn't get very far in it, because it's bullshit, but I saw nothing scary there at all, so I don't know what this guy's talking about. Problem with that game is it's a hard game, and if you die, you lose all your s**t and all your progress. Only way to retain your s**t is to go back to the hub world and save. Well, my personality always decides to push a little farther along in the level before going back, and then I end up getting killed and losing everything, then having to restart the level with less supplies than I had to begin with. And after restarting the same stage with absolutely no s**t about twelve hundred times, I hung it up. And as far as the game itself, it's got a pretty big following and is hyped as the most "HARDCOREZ" game on the PS3, but I didn't find anything special about it all, even purely from gameplay standpoint. Maybe I'll hit it back up someday. But yeah. Not a very good game if you ask me.

Anyway, the Grinder looks like it's going to be something along the lines of Left 4 Dead. And as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing.

But again, only the Wii version.
Honestly, I'm so damn sick of hoping for a new good survival horror game to come out.
Like, yes, some companies are trying, but they're failing. The new Silent Hills, sure, they might still have great storylines, and really psychological aspects to them (in some cases) but they're still not scary. And I know it's not because I've grown numb to horror or some crap like that, because the OLD ones still scare me. Same with Resident Evils, if I put them down for long enough to forget what IS behind the next corner.
But the stuff that comes out today is so focused on the "Action" that it completely misses the whole point of a horror game and that is the feel of helplessness.
And sure, action shooters get a bigger audience, but they should stop trying to pass off as the "new generation of survival horror", because they're not. Not Silent Hill Homecoming, not Dead Space, and sure as hell not Resident Evil.

Well. In defense of Dead Space... it started you out with pretty limited resources and had some genuinely good survival horror moments towards the beginning. That scene in the very opening gameplay moments actually made me jump, and really got my heart pumping. Then yes, it devolves into pretty much pure action with a horror setting. I don't know, though. I just loved the atmosphere of that game. I like Dead Space.

I really, really wish Deadly Premonition was multi-plat. So you could play it. I didn't find it very scary or anything at all, but it felt like a true oldschool survival horror kind of experience. It felt like a Dreamcast-era survival horror game. And it has very endearing characters and a good storyline.

Cursed Mountain, also, was pretty good. Yeah, it's definitely got an RE4-style aiming mechanic and gets a little heavy on combat at times, but it's also very oldschool. And that's another newer horror game that wins for me due its unique atmosphere. And there's some genuine horror to it.

But I agree for the most part. They should stop trying to call it Survival Horror, because for the most part, that's just bullshit posturing. If you want newer Survival Horror experiences, I suggest maybe picking up a Dreamcast. You can find them very cheap on eBay. It's got the best version of RE2, as well as some Survival Horror classics like D2 and Illbleed. And some RE-clones like Carrier. Or you can dig up some classics for the PSone, like Clock Tower. Call of Cthulhu for the original Xbox was also very good. Although I've never personally played it, I hear Half Life 2 was very scary. You can find that on the orange box compilation for PS3. It's an FPS, though...

First I've heard of it. Quite groovy (though not very scary looking).
