What is it about Tennant that people love him? I mean he was a good Doctor but he was just so... so... so human! I mean everything about him made me want to sympathize with him. He really wasn't that weird it seemed. I mean his speech pattern was wacky at times but all I seem to gather from those who are obssessed with Tennant is "HE'S SO AWESOME OMG!" That just means you think he's hot. This offends me on a personal level because that's just insulting to the other Doctor's.
See I think Matt Smith is the s**t. He is so out there and so alien that it makes me happy. The Doctor shouldn't be human and understandable. He's an alien. If I want understanding I have the Doctors companions and Captain Jack for that. Matt Smith's Doctor also gives me this feeling that yes nothing can beat him even in the most desperate of situations. He bluffs the Darleks with a Jammy Dodger! I mean come on!
Tennant's doctor was honestly, and I cannot stop saying this enough, so human. He panicked then last minute came up with the solution. Seriously one of the few episodes I saw Tennant act like the Doctor I liked (a Doctor that both Eccelson and Smith have portrayed) was the scarecrow episodes. He had the air about him that made me think that yes this man is the Doctor but most the time he just seemed like fan candy.
I mean I'm a Matt Smith> Eccelson> Baker> Tennant fan. I mean I really haven't watched much else of the other Doctors (this includes Baker) but Key to Time is the next on my list for sure. This being said I'm posting this because I want to know why so many people think Tennant is awesome when I see him as par.
I don't know I just don't see why people think Tennant is amazing and I've never gotten a straight answer.

Well, I'm a Tennant fan because of how much humanity he showed through his run. I thought he brought a new dimension to the character. I mean he was wacky and he was out there--just like any doctor--but he also brought a certain degree of darkness to The Doctor, like he was battling with a lot of inner demons. More so than most of the other doctors.
Though the same could be said for Eccelson, who I think was the most human of all of the doctors thus far.
I will admit, Tennant does have the good looking factor as well, but so does Matt Smith--just not to the same degree.

I think the fact that Tennant's doctor seemed so human is why people like him. It made everything slightly more realistic in a very non-realistic setting, aliens and time travel. Portraying human emotions and reactions made it eaiser for the audience to relate him. That's just my opinion, though.
Matt Smith. Oh, where to start with him. I agree, the alien in the Doctor certainly comes forth with him, as does the cocky confidence the Doctor's always had. Maybe he's a little too confident in his actions, though. It's like he knows everything's going to be okay, even though the odds tell otherwise, and for me that slightly takes away from the suspense Tennant was able to bring to the episodes.
Although the Jammie Dodger trick was brilliant. But if I don't stop now, I'm going to start talking about Steven's writing, so I'll sum this up.
Basically, for me, Tennant was brilliant because he was so human. Matt's brilliant because he's so not. And they both have amazing hair.
Long story short, they tie for me.

You know, coming at this discussion from a classic Who point of view, I really think that a lot of people only like David Tennant most because they haven't seen anyone else or have only seen him and then Nine and Eleven. To give credit, I do like David, but he's not a high-rank on my list of Doctors (which isn't saying I dislike him, because I love all the Doctors a lot.) But whenever I hear someone saying that they love Ten most (Or Nine/Eleven for me, but mostly Ten) my first thought is always 'have you seen any other Doctor?'
Of course, being a fan of Four, I get the exact same reaction from people sometimes and have to actually back-up my love of him. But I'm fine with that. I don't mind people who like Ten, but I don't give them full-credit unless they have at least some working knowledge of the other Doctors. If they just so say 'OMG He's so HAWT!' I tend to not give them much time.
I do agree with most of what you said, though, Neo. I like David, but he's not a favorite and it's because of a lot of the reasons you listed. He suffered from 'Human Syndrome.' I'm not really sure that's his fault, though. I think he suffered more from 'RTD Syndrome.' I mean, of course he was a little human. Almost everyone of his stories took place on Earth and if when they were off-world they usually on some space-station or any a vehicle. All of his companions were human and from the modern-era (excluding Jack). I think the whole Tennant Era was a little too human, not just Ten. I mean, sure, the Earth is the Doctor's favorite 'pet' planet, but he doesn't live on it. (Well, Three did, but he didn't have much choice. = ) )

I definately agree on the humanity bit. I love the Doctor. He's probobly one of my favorite character of all time. I always liked his eccentricity and even more so, I loved how he always was well mannered and was able to be charming while keeping his distance and without romantic implications. Ten kissed every girl he saw, had a guilt trip over everything he did, emoted about Gallifrey right left and center, and was hyper as a squirrel on a caffeen high. He had moments where he really was like the Doctor but most of the time, I didn't see it.
And speaking of attractiveness, I never really saw why people loved him there either. Speaking in that order, I'd say Jon Pertwee places first, Tom Baker comes in second, and Matt Smith falls to third.

Much like with Tom Baker, Tennant was the Doctor for a long time, four out of the six years so far since the show's return, and was the current Doctor during a huge upsurge in popularity and so for an awful lot of people he was their first Doctor and for a fair few, until Smith turned up, the only one they had watched. He's charming and funny and handsome so people like him and for many of the new audience his humanity is a good thing. While I agree that he was too human and the whole lonely-god thing was wearing a little thin by the end of his tenure, he is still one of my favourites. True this is partly because I got very attached to him over the years but it is mainly because despite his flaws he was still an excellent Doctor, just like all those who came before him.

Speaking of the number of years playing the Doctor, a bit random this coming out, but here's the order from longest to shortest number of years (screen time, not including audios). Matt Smith is no included.
1. Tom Baker 2. Jon Pertwee 3. William Hartnel 4. Peter Davison 5. Patrick Troughton 6. Sylvester McCoy 7. David Tennant 8. Colin Baker 9. Christopher Eccleston 10. Paul McGann
So, though David Tennant did have the same numer of years running as the Doctor as Hartnel, Davison, Troughton, and McCoy, he had much shorter episodes. They were each only 45 minutes giving him much less time actually being the Doctor. He places only 7th. Tom Baker went for 7 years followed up by Jon Pertwee who went for 5.
