Hmm, well they all have different strenghts and weaknesses, and there are different elements so:
Fire: Zuko
water: Katara (but not in the beginning of the series)
Earth- Toph, she even said it herself "I am the greatest earthbender ever and don't you two dunderheads forget it!"(or something along those lines)
Air- Aang, well not much of a choice here, now is there?

Toph and Katara; both became really powerful benders in the end. Does this include Aang? He's the Avatar, making him the most powerful Bender in the series.

Definitely Toph. She's extremely skilled for a twelve year old, and doesn't let being blind handicap her.

ID SAY ANG heart heart but true, that would be cheating..I SAY Appa because the original benders learnt from ancient animals, and flying bisons are the BOMB and the best animal-bender ..and Im biast about bisons named APPA heart heart
