Can you do it and still be a good christian? I refuse to define the term for anyone as it is a personal thing and often, that seems to make the best arguments. I've been told my a hardcore Christian that there is no such thing. I have a christian character whom this is a big issue for. He believes he's going to Hell for a great deal of reasons.

Yes you can kill in self defense and still be a Christian and its not sinful. The commandment says do not murder. Defense killing is not murder.
Also the Bible also states that there is a time for war as well as everything else under heaven

you've both got good points. abcjerryingalls, it isn't a sin to protect yourself if your being attacked. however, to a point. if someone threatens you with a knife asking for your money, don't fight back. If you see a police officer or someone. you can call for them or something and you'll be fine. but if they are meaning physical harm, fight back by all means. and yes the bible does say there is a time for war. and I know (like my brother) christians who are in the military and they may end up killing someone. but god isn't going to say that you sinned.
and Sinann of Erin, tell your friend that he can be forgiven of his sins no matter what he has done. God forgives all things.

1stbhk and Sinann of Erin, tell your friend that he can be forgiven of his sins no matter what he has done. God forgives all things. Not a real person...just someone I'm writing. Fiction. My friend and I argued about the subject and I thought it was interesting. This is entirely hypothetical.

you most certainly can! if a person is threatening to take your life away from you, you have every right to kill him/her. God will understand smile

as a christian you are to try to be as peaceful as possible it says if they demand your coat you are to give it or your money but yes there is a time for peace and a time for war when you've tried to be peaceable and yet they are intent on your life your supposed to fight back in fact if your in the neighborhood and you see someone being attacked your supposed to help or do something.

I would say in self-defense you could kill someone...I do Karate and if someone were to attack me, then I would fight, especially if they threatened my friends and family...I also plan on going into the military and I will have to defend my country, by fighting...There are cases in the Bible (in the old testament) where God gave victory to the Israelites in battle when they were attacked...
Jesus does say turn the other cheek, but I can't see God being angry with you for defending yourself and/or those around you...

You can be a good Christian and kill out of self defense....because to kill out of self defense implies that you had no other alternatives ....that was your absolute last resort.
but if you have any options at all and you don't exercise them then that is murder.

1stbhk if someone threatens you with a knife asking for your money, don't fight back. Wait, so I shouldn't fight back, even if I've been trained to the point that I can effectively disarm and incapacitate the person without killing them? I mean, yes, if you don't know how to fight back or can't do so without use of deadly force, it's probably best to surrender and go to the authorities with whatever information on the person you may have. But... I imagine it would be better to capture the would-be criminal instead of just giving up and letting them escape with your money.

The scriptures say not to murder, not "not to kill." The difficulty is in telling what the difference is ><

But... I imagine it would be better to capture the would-be criminal instead of just giving up and letting them escape with your money. I agree...I'm training in the Martial Arts for a reason...I know how to disarm people without killing them...I don't think it is wrong to fight back...If you do end up killing them and their intent was to kill you, then I can't see how God would hold that against you when you were fighting for your life...I would prefer not to kill someone if I had the choice, but when it comes down to it if it is them or me, human nature is to survive, so I would naturally chose me...Its the "Fight or Flight Instinct" that all humans posses to survive... As I said earlier, I also plan on serving in the armed forces, in which if I had to kill I don't think it would be held against me if I had to fight to save my fellow soldiers, myself, and my country...
