~ Clean your tank at least once a week. Make sure the thank is properly filtered, and use a syphon (also known as a gravel vaccuum) for the best results. Cleaning should include a 30%, or more as needed, water change, the removal of any algae if need be, checking filters and other equipment to ensure they are working properly, and cleaning filter media in syphoned tank water as needed.
~ The less stocked your tank, the smaller your water changes will be. Like wise, if you tank has too many fish in it, the water changes will be bigger and more frequent.
~ Only keep fish in your tank that can live in it for the rest of their live happily. For example, Goldfish do not belong in 10 gallons and Bettas need more then 4 cups of water.
~ Over feeding your fish will cause your water quality to decrease. Feed only as much as your fish can eat in a few minutes. Also, feeding several times in very small amounts may help with not over feeding.
Feel free to add anything I have forgotten. I'm just going by things off the top of my head =3
