Rules
1) Each combatant starts out with 500 health points
2) Each combatant rolls a 1 100-sided dice
3) If a combatant wins a roll, they receive no damage
4) The difference between the rolls determines the damage to the losing combatant
5) When a combatant’s health points reach 0, they lose

"Well, here goes."
It was raining, but the small arena within the training grounds was dry. A barrier of a sort kept the rain out, making it a rather nice place to fight. Alnette preferred places like this. She scattered roses all over the floor as she prepared herself for the duel. Though this was a duel of magic, Alnette didn't see anything wrong with providing something she could work with if she really needed to.
This was Alnette's second duel today. However, these were different circumstances. While she had relied on physical attacks against Discord, she intended to rely entirely on magic. She knew Hrothbert was far more skilled, but she hoped her tenacity would assist her in this duel.
Closing her eyes, she recited an incantation, one for a simple fireball.

He hadn't been expecting Alnette to strike immediately. A fireball streaked past his shoulder, singing the fabric of his waistcoat. "That'll be fun to explain to Emma.", he drawled as the fireball finished its trajectory and splashed against the wall behind him.
"No introductions, then?" he said with a wry smile, a spell already developing.

"Would you have preferred to sit and chat while we enjoyed a cup of tea first?" Alnette couldn't help but joke.
Quick to prepare herself again, the baroness recited the same incantation, another fireball launching itself at Hrothbert. This time, however, he skillfully reflected it, sending it flying back at its caster. Alnette managed to dodge, though one of her gloves was singed in the process. "Remind me not to use the same spell twice in a row against you."

She's young, love. Be gentle.
I wasn't thinking of being anything else.
And no sarcasm.
The sorcerer loosed a spell of his own; fireballs, javelins of ice, and other such things were hardly his style. Alnette would feel a portion of her strength drained, drawn into the earth like water soaking into the ground.

"What sort of spell is that?!"
Alnette could counter against magic she was familiar with, but this was no spell she knew. Unable to think of a way to counter it, she stood, helpless against the draining of her strength. She began to recite an incantation under her breath. She wouldn't give in easily.

He took a step closer, hands still at his sides, the wry smile still gracing his hawklike features.
The sorcerer's attack was mental in nature this time, a brief stab at the walls of Alnette's mind. If it was effective, Alnette would be temporarily disoriented.

His mental attack was very effective. Alnette was disoriented enough that she had forgotten the spell she was reciting, mid-incantation. When it wore off, she'd have to begin the incantation all over again.

A single rose petal rose from the ground, transforming under the influence of the Baroness' spell. A single projectile of magical energy sliced right past him, disturbing the air around it and sending Hrothbert back a few steps.

At least two dozen more rose petals followed the first one, firing themselves straight at Hrothbert. Alnette's eyes were closed in concentration.

"I saw it done with cards, and after some trial and error, I altered it to suit the rose petals."
Alnette knew better than to continue her rose assault, so she recited an incantation. Eyes closed, she prepared a spell that was popular among dark knights. It weakened the caster and left them vulnerable, but if the spell wasn't stopped or didn't backfire, it proved to be very useful.

Alnette shook her head for a moment. She was wearing out quick, and she was hardly able to keep her thoughts straight. At this particular moment, it was obvious she wouldn't be able to use and complex spells for a while.
