Character Name: Matuathan (shut up. it’s a family name.)
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Farmercraft/Jr. Apprentice
History: Matuathan was raised like the typical spoiled Holder boy. His father, something of an affluent smith in Bitra, managed to earn enough coin to take very good care of his family, and growing up Matuathan and his younger sister led privileged and fairly carefree childhoods. While he'd certainly never speak for his sister, Matuathan's Holder days were spent with very little attention on chores or acquiring any skills. When other children might possibly be helping their parents with their various Crafts, this boy used his time to pal around with the other rich kids, skirting responsibility and taunting the ones unlucky enough to be born in poor but hardworking families. Thoughts of the future rarely passed the child’s mind. Why work when there so many other, better things to do, like hanging out with peeps?
This mindset extended into his teen years, and when Matuathan was fifteen his parents finally confronted him. They would be unable to support their son forever, and they did not want their oldest child and only son to end up as a lowly drudge. “Find a craft to apprentice into or we’ll find one for you” was their ultimatum. As the boy was reluctantly going through the motions of searching for an interesting craft, the Searchriders came to Bitra. Surprisingly, they chose Matuathan and a handful of other folk to take back with them to Benden. The boy couldn’t believe his luck! If he became a Dragonrider, he wouldn’t have to find a craft, because Dragonriders were too cool and special to do any of that.
That dream was quickly dashed once he arrived to Benden. Once those in charge of the Candidates discovered he had hardly the most rudimentary of skills, they stuffed him into Farmercraft as a tentative apprentice. New hands were always needed to weed the fields and apply fertilizer, after all, and rolling around in the dirt for a few good turns would teach the boy a valuable lesson. Almost four turns later, Matuathan has progressed beyond pulling weeds but is still far behind other apprentices of the same. He holds onto the hope of Impressing, like any other Candidate.
Description: Matuathan's features are more ordinary than anything else, though his mother has always called him “handsome.” You know mothers. He's got a narrow nose, narrow lips, and even the shape of his blue eyes is rather narrow, settled deeply beneath prominent brows. His hair is a dark brown and is kept extremely short (think buzz cut).
He's large-shouldered and tall, built solidly and for strength but not so much for endurance or speed. His height resides in his legs, though at 6'1" it doesn't really matter where most of it is. His acquisition of muscle is recent, due to his Farmercraft Apprenticeship. He's solid as a brick shithouse, and he appears almost top heavy because of his bulk.
Personality: Matuathan is nothing if not outwardly confident - sometimes overly so, to the point of being nigh insufferable. He doesn't feel the need to often break eye contact (because to maintain eye contact makes a pair of people equal, and the moment a person looks away they are the inferior), he doesn't look at the ground when he walks, and he has exceptional posture if one makes an exception of when he's sprawled ungracefully around the fireplace or slightly inebriated anywhere else.
He is, it would seem, the physical embodiment of charisma; he is as unafraid of the limelight as a dragon is of a wherry. Matuathan can and will talk a person's ear off if given the chance, quite often about himself or things related to him not out of sheer egotism (though definitely partially) but simply because it's what he knows best, and he doesn't do well with being embarrassed over anything. It's a rare sight to see him ruffled and out of his element, but it happens now and then, and it has been known to kill his mood for days at a time.
While he's often friendly and easy-going, he has his spells of extreme insensitivity, backed up by a moodiness that's painful, if not from the sheer change in atmosphere, then certainly by his biting tongue and petty insults. He doesn't necessarily enjoy starting fights, but he can and will, especially if he knows somebody is nearby and willing to help him finish it. He'll blithely state later that he could have done it alone, if only to save the scraps of his easily scraped dignity.
Perhaps worst in the arsenal of Matuathan's persona is his jealousy, a streak that runs deep when applied to people he cares for deeply. He's been known to downright hate those who take up too much of his closest friends' time, doing his best to prove them as horrible people regardless of their status otherwise, if only to make sure he gets his allotted time back. Because truly, he gets lost without their presence much of the time, and despite his outward confidence and charisma he can sometimes be prone to phases of self-depreciating loneliness.
To see Matuathan with those he cares about most, the ones that spark such jealously, an observer might not understand the dynamic of the relationship. He can be painfully domineering and rather abusive verbally, though in the end he'll always say they should rest assured, as those he dislikes receive the cold side of his personality. He tends to gravitate to the quieter ones, because he is selfish and has always preferred to keep his most precious confidantes to himself; the less outgoing the character, the less likely they are to stray. He almost always invades the personal space of everyone he knows, acquaintances or lovers or best friends, and more than anything he is a young man who is afraid of being alone in the world.
