xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxC O A L Sitting perched before an open book with candlelight flickering across his face was a young owl named Coal. The name had been given to him by a female barn owl who had taken him in under her wing after he had arrived to the great tree. Coal, it had suited him with his feathers of gray, black, and brown. Mostly they were gray and black. Very abnormal in the eyes of other barn owls who had the usual coloring that were white, golden brown, or cream colored.
But, for some reason Coal had been born a black barn owl. Because of this his mother didn't see him as her own, didn't feed him, and eventually shoved him out of his nest. Celine, the owl that had taken him in, had been the closest thing to a mother he had ever had. Coal remained grateful to her, and to the rest of the Guardians for taking him in. The great gray owl who had saved his life still remains Coal's friend.
Blinking, Coal realized that he had been reading the same passage from the book twice. Ah, probably because he had let his mind wander off a little to much. Clacking his beak softly, Coal focused his mind on the book he was reading, which was a book about owl abnormalities. So far he had yet to find anything about barn owls being born with black feathers. He could guess why; those few rare black barn owls had not been as lucky as he had.
Flipping the page Coal found himself reading about a snowy owl who had been born without any spots. That was a bit odd for snowy owls. Bored, he closed the book before setting it off to the side before grabbing another book gently with his talons. Setting it down in front of him, Coal read the title before opening the book. Turning the pages he came to the chapter about King Coryn, a barn owl who had ruled over the great tree long before Coal's time. He skimmed down to the part that talked about Coryn's gift: Firesight.
Coal read over the information about Firesight. 'One gifted in Firesight will be able to look into a fire and see a portion of the past, present or future. King Coryn had described the visions as being moving pictures in the fire.' Coal made a face as he quickly closed the book. Firesight, it would explain the reason as to why he saw things in fires. His gaze flickered towards one of the lit candles before he snatched his gaze away. No, he didn't have that gift. It was just his mind playing tricks on him. And to get his mind off such thoughts about Firesight, Coal picked up a book about wet poop jokes that would certainly entertain him.

FellanThe Ryb of CollieringFellan entered the library as she usually did in her free time. The library was a place of peace for the young ryb. She easily made her way to the shelves and picked up a random book, on some random subject. After making sure she didn't read it before, she lighted onto her favorite perch in the back of the library. She read the book in silence, taking in all the information she can. The book was on crowning, the causes of crowning, and which trees it seems to occurs mostly around.
After a while, Fellan looked up to see Coal reading as well. She looked over him for a moment. He was darker than most other barn owls. At first, Fellan had mistaken him for a lesser sooty, but his chest had been too dark and he had a different build. Fellan didn't know him only for his looks, though. He had been placed in her chaw. He happened to be very talented at colliering. When Kyler began talking to Coal, Fellan went back to reading.

xxxxC O A LxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGifted with Firesight Coal glanced over when Kyler, a fellow barn owl, joined him. Being stared at caused him to shift uncomfortably on his perch. After a moment Kyler asked Coal what it was he was reading. "A book of wet poop jokes. I figured I would take a break from all of the colliering and weather interpretation books that I've been reading a lot of." Since he was in both chaws, Coal wanted to learn everything he could. He listened intently while in chaw class with his rybs Fellan, the ryb of Colliering, and Sandsays, the ryb of weather interpretation.
Feeling eyes on him, Coal glance back to see Fellan herself perched in her usual spot in the library. She had looked down at the book she was reading, and Coal went back to his own book. However, he couldn't read with Kyler sitting right there. That would have been rude really. "So, how is your Battle Chaw going Kyler?" Coal asked with a slight tilt of his head.
The Battle Chaw, it was a chaw that he would have been able to join. Because for some strange reason unknown to him, Coal was stronger than his fellow barn owls. He had proved as much while he had been in the battle chaw before being put into an actual chaw. However he had been chosen for the colliering and weather interpretation chaws. Something he was pretty happy with. Fighting didn't appeal to him as it did many other owls.

Kyler looked at Coal. "Good thanks for asking." He looked at Fellan for a second then looked back at Coal. "Hows your chaw?"

AybaMember of the Search and Rescue ChawA large eagle owl entered the library, looking around. Fellan was sitting in the corner, she observed. A short ways from the colliering ryb, a pair of owls sat talking. It was that Coal owl and the one called Kyler. Ayba often spaced herself from the other owls outside of her chaw, so it was obvious that she could only match name to face and their chaw.
Ayba looked around the library. Nothing much was happening there except for their talking. She sighed as she looked around for a moment longer before she approached the two barn owls.
Almost immediately Ayba regretted her decision. Ayba quickly thought up an excuse. She got an idea.

xxxxC O A LxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGifted with Firesight Coal smiled as he bobbed his head up and down, glad to hear that Kyler's chaw was doing well. He saw the other owl glance back towards where Fellan read, but did not comment on it. Nor did he say anything to his ryb; as she looked busy with her book. Coal tilted his head when Kyler asked him how his own chaw was doing. "It's going very well. Fallen is a good ryb as well as Sandsays." He stated with a smile. He was fond of his two rybs, Fellan a little more because the colliering chaw was his favorite chaw. He had a knack for colliering. Now if only he could stop seeing things in fires he would be good to go. This was not something he had told anyone, and wasn't planning on saying anything unless it became a problem. Or until someone, such as a ryb, asked him about it.
The sound of another owl approaching where they sat drew Coal's attention. He glanced over to see the owl was Ayba, a member of the Search and Rescue chaw. He didn't know the bigger owl all that well, as she was in a completely different chaw than he was. At least he knew her name. "Hello Ayba." Coal said with a slight bob of his head.

AybaMember of the Search and Rescue ChawAyba felt relieved for a moment. She had been worried that she had been seen as evesdropping. She answered a quick reply. "Hello, Coal. Do either of you mind if I join your conversation?" She glanced back at Fellan for a moment, who happened to be absorbed in her book. She then turned back to the two barn owls. To her, their appearances looked like polar opposites. Black and white, hot fire and cold, cold metal. However, like fire and metal, black and white, each of their appearances made the other's pop. This seemed strange to Ayba. ((Sorry, I meant the larger owl to be Ayba.))

xxxxC O A LxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGifted with Firesight Ayba asking if she could join his and Kyler's conversation had Coal shrugging his shoulders. He glanced over at Kyler who said that he didn't mind. "I don't mind Ayba. You can join us." He smiled as he spread out one wing to gesture at a perch for her to sit at. "How goes your chaw?" It seemed polite to ask the other owl, as he had asked Kyler the same question. Coal was also interested to know as well. The Search and Rescue chaw was famous for helping to find and help owls who needed help. Many bring back young owlets who have fallen from their nests which could not be found. Some were just unwanted, such as Coal himself was. The great gray owl who had picked him up had been in the Search and Rescue chaw. And still was. Coal owed that owl his life.

AybaMember of the Search and Rescue ChawAyba thought about the question. "Actually, it's been rather quiet lately. None of us ever seem to see anyone on our usual scout runs. There have been no reports either. I guess that is a good thing." She replied, thoroughly thinking of the events in the past few months. There hasn't been anything since the last forest fire, which all the chaws except for the Danyar, Battle, and Ga'Hooleology chaws are called.

"Thats good to hear. Well I'm off, I have to work on my flying." Kyler takes a few steps and tries to fly out the door. He makes it but he kind of wobbled in his flight.

FellanThe Ryb of CollieringFellan let Kyler exit the library before she put up her book and looked between the young owls. "I'd be glad of the quietness. It never stays that way for long," She said commenting on Ayba's answer. To Fellan, Ayba seemed to want people to rescue. Fellan knew that the chaws were made so that they would eliminate the problem they were made to fight. The Colliers needed to be able to fuel the tree. If they fueled it to the point of not needing to, they had done their job well. Ayba should be happy in the lack of work. Fellan kept her face expressionless as she flew out of the library.

xxxxC O A LxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGifted with Firesight Coal watched Kyler fly out of the library with a nod of his head before turning his attention back towards Ayba. His head tilted to one side as he considered her statement. "It is a good thing things are quiet. Gives us all a chance to relax. Our chaws were busy for a while there, what with that last huge forest fire. We could use this time to rest, so that the next time our chaws go out we'll be well rested and ready to go." Coal stated as he closed the book he had been reading.
Fellan leaving the library also caught his attention. He watched as his ryb left. What she said made sense to Coal. And, the quietness would not last for very long. Who knew when the next wild fire would be or that next great big storm. Coal, honestly, wouldn't mind a little break.
