Chapter 1~
I coughed once, wondering what illness I had this time. Was it an after effect of my ADD and ADHD medication? I didn’t think so. The doctors hadn’t said anything about that. I coughed again, and grimaced. The coughing hurt my chest. I walked over to my locker, and threw all of my books in. Then I saw Mia walking down the hall and called her over.
“Hey. You have any homework?” I asked her. We both had different schedules, with different classes, but we were still best friends.
“Hi! And no, I don’t think so. Are we going to the football game tonight?” She asked. It was tradition, that we go to all the football games. But I recently started to only go to the home games. Since I started paying for my own gas.
“Depends. Is it home?” I asked.
“Yeah, I think so. Who are we playing?” She asked, tucking her golden blond hair behind her ears.
“Elco.” I said, and watched as her blue eyes widened.
“Elco?” She squeaked. “We haven‘t beaten them for over . . . ” She trailed off.
“Fifteen years.” I finished for her. She nodded her head, and we started walking down the hall, out towards the school parking lot. I coughed again, away from Mia. When I finished, she looked at me and grimaced.
“Are you alright?” She asked.
“Yeah, just another stupid cold.” I said. I brushed my black hair out of my face, and looked out at the parking lot. There was Kevin, Mia’s boy friend. He was the quarter back on our football team, the Vikings. She started walking towards him, and I followed her warily. I didn’t much like this crowd. Mia and the rest of the cheerleaders were all burnettes or blonds, they were all tan, and had pretty blue eyes, while I was pale, had black hair, and dark brown eyes that almost always looked black.
“C‘mon, Emily! You‘ll be fine!!” She said, and then she ran up and hugged him. I groaned as she said my name. I hated it. I wanted to change it to Fang or Nyx or something like that. I shook my head, and followed her. While she was hugging Kevin, he grimaced at me over her shoulder. Then he whispered in her ear, and she turned around to look at me. She whispered something in his ear, and she walked over. I raised an eyebrow.
“Let me guess. He wants me to leave?” I asked, before she could say anything.
“Well . . . . Yes.” She said not bothering to deny it.
“Alright. I‘ll see you around.” I walked off, ignoring the laughter behind me. I walked back to my locker, so I could grab my iPOD touch, and then I walked over to my car. I unlocked it and got in the drivers seat. As soon as I turned on the radio, it started blaring the lyrics to Perfect Weapon, my favorite song by my favorite band Black Veil Brides. About half way into the song, I heard a loud bang on my passenger window. It was Shane. I unlocked the door and he opened it, and plopped into the passengers seat.
“Hey!” He shouted over the music. I laughed and yelled, “Hi!”
“Can you turn down the music?” He shouted, smiling at me. I nodded and turned it down to an appropriate level.
“So what’s up?” I asked, putting my feet up on the dash.
“Nothing much. Were you waiting for someone?” He asked, looking at me.
“Yeah. Mia. She‘s talking to Kevin.” I grimaced, and saw him grimace, too. Neither of us liked the crowd that Mia was in, and both of us were hated by Kevin.
“Well, I saw her get in his car. They probably already left together.” He grimaced again, and looked at me.
“Shane, you are a life saver.” I said as I took my feet down and started the car.
“You want a ride, or do you already have one? And I‘m not going right home. I‘m going to the old cemetery.” I told him.
“Cemetery sounds great to me.” He said, leaning back. Neither of us bothered to buckle our seatbelts. I peeled out of the parking lot and headed towards the cemetery. Within minutes we were there. I hoped out of the car and stretched, my black tank top riding up to show an inch of skin at my waist. I didn’t bother to pull it back down. It was raining, though. I shivered slightly. Shane came over and gave me his jacket. I pulled the sleeves up my arms and shot him a grateful look. We started walking through the wooded part of the cemetery. I wound my way around the trees, until I started to see some of the first headstones. I ran ahead of Shane, and hid behind one of the trees. I giggled, and that gave me away. He ran up to the tree, and put his hands on either side of me, so that I was caged. I looked up at him and smiled. He lowered his head towards mine, and I stretched up on my tiptoes. Right before our lips touched, a man with black hair grabbed both of us by the arm. I cried out as his grip tightened on my arm.
“Yukori has chosen thee! Night calls to thee! You must answer Her call!” He shouted. Then there was stinging pain in my upper arms, and I passed out for the first time in my life.
