When you hear a song that invokes a feeling, whether good or bad, what was it that set you off?
For myself, harmony and a driving beat will usually do it. If the musicians are talented and the song can get me into it, then I'm usually there. I'm also a sucker for a good instrumental.
Cheezy, overdone music or lack of talent will typically make me displeased with an artist. If the singing is out of tune or time from the rest of the band then I really can't care for it.

Heavy guitar riffs, good vocals/lyrics, heavy drum beats (double bass), harmonies

Mostly the same with what you guys said, but also the singing. There has to be actual singing. I'm so tired of seeing a band that looks cool, has good music going, and then its all screaming from there on and they completely lose me. Its usuaully about the voice for me. 3nodding I'm a sucker for a rich, good voice blaugh

it varies, sometime it'll be the lyrics, sometimes the rhythm or whatever. But I am a sucker for a good melody and I'm personally usually impressed by a good drum beat. Also if the singer is particularly talented it usually catches my ear... So yeah, like I said, could be anything lol

A good guitar riff or a catchy melody. Or even lyrics which I can relate to.

emotion. emotion is the real power of a song. if you can feel the energy and soul of the preformer in the song, then it really stands out. It can be soft or crashing, quiet or loud. busy or simple. it can be a hard riff or even a single note. it can be even silence.

I like songs with alot of energy. for me its high energy all at once like American Idiot by Greenday. Bolivard of Broken Dreams is good. or Pain by Jimmey Eat World.

for me, the music, the notes, the harmonies, that has really got to come out and say something. if i don't feel an emotion coming out of what i'm listening to i won't like it as much. i feel the best songs have a feeling coming out of the music itself, you can listen to its instrumental track and feel whatever the lyrics are trying to express. the singer's voice also has to evoke that same emotion.

If the musicians are talented, particularly if there's really wicked guitar solos and more than three chords (like punk bands always play). Also, a song can really invoke happy feelings (and sometimes make me cry) if the lyrics are about love and apply to my feelings for my boyfriend.
EDIT: I forgot... I love songs with... oh damn... instrumental, I think it's called. Like Metallica's S and M CD's. And if there's a metal or death metal song it's even better if it has really good piano music in it and some singing too.

If the chorus is good then I like it....Than I'll get more research of the band to determine if I'll get into them or not....

something fresh and new, something that shows why that particular band/artist is different than Bobby B. down the street

For me it would probably be... the beat, how the singers voice fits in with the music, and the overall outlook of the bands music.

I love guitar harmonies! I also love really catchy, upbeat stuff... I especially like songs that have some kind of rise... it starts off slow and it picks up. Decrescendos and crescendos really adds to the effect of a song. Hm... "Dare You to Move" is one of those songs that really draws me in emotionally.

Catchy, meaningful lyrics, nice sounding flowing riffs, and crazy drums. Also ever since I got into Dream Theater, really skillfull Double Bass.

the lyrics and the feel of the song. also if i can close my eyes, listen and imagine what the song is saying i usually figure out if i like it or not. Also the words have to flow, they can't be all choppy.
