This is more or less for what kind of weapons you would find in the Dwarven territory. Now obviously, there will be things like Pick Axes and drill, and things of that nature. Obviously, they aren't going to be the weapon weapons.

If anything, the dwarves are most likely going to wear heavy duty armor. They won't be blinged out like Knights, but they will be covered at least on their upper bodies. Since they're dwarves, and they do work underground, I believe that their main weaponry are things modeled after digging tools.

Giant war hammers to crush in the skulls of their enemies. Maybe a more techy pick axe that could extend and probably do more than just penetrating the body. They may also have maces. More or less, bludgeoning weapons modeled after mining tools. Though their small, they're super strong and will also most likely have heavy weapons that most humans can't easily lift up. Think big and strong.

As the person who wrote up the current dwarf profile. When thinking of this incarnation of dwarves, for the most part they were using hammers and axes, hammers and axes that are about the same size as the dwarf.

You could say though that weapons like this is very dwarven, a war hammer which when you hit something releases a spring, shooting a spike out the middle of the hammer piercing through armor. Or a pick axe where the end is actually a pair of sharp blades, and if you slip the pick in far enough it would hit a latch releasing a spring that would force the two blades apart slicing the person or object struck by it from the inside. These sorts of weapons could have a screw on the handle that the dwarf twists to reset them.

You have got to think though that a dwarf's strength would be of great use resting a crossbow.

There would also be dwarves who use really large weapons, something like a 12 foot(365cm) long pole that has all sorts of blades sticking out of it. Probably using something like this against cavalry or light infantry.

As far as armor, a dwarf could wear 300lbs (136kg), the amount of armor would more likely depend on how much the dwarf in question could afford. Though a knight would have to be wealthy to afford their armor, so a dwarf to wear more would have to be really, really, wealthy.

With the crossbow. The dwarves seem a bit too small to bother with such a weapon, as they appear more like the type who, when fighting head to head, will actually use melee weapons rather than long range. If there are any long range, then it is most likely mortars that are set up in the area.

I agree that dwarves are more likely to attack with melee weapons, however they are also a defensive race, who build large fortifications even if they don't expect to be attacked. And to defend a fortification you use ranged weapons.

As for mortars vs other weapons, it depends on the tech level more then anything, and I'm not so sure about giving out explosives.

And as for the size issue, you can easily make a crossbow that is the size of a toy, but still has more power then any human could reset. Or you could put a crossbow inside a battle axe, or pick axe type weapon.

I also see mercenary dwarves using gauntlets that hide crossbow bolts that are launched by springs.

I think we should elaborate on melee weapons for dwarves, but since they are a defensive type race, large composite crossbows would be good as well as spring based or more technical type crossbows and related items. I think we could also include mortar if we decide such techniques and technologies are available to the people. [that's something we will have to define pretty soon...]

As for the war hammer, I think it should be spring based to implement more damage...crush just about anything by a dwarf while being too heavy and unwieldy for any other race...maybe oarks could manage to wield it correctly...we'll see.
