If you play a Yokai, Kamui, or Onryo,
or are questing for one,
or just generally interested,
this is the thread for you!

Birth.

**A yokai can be born of other yokai, or with a human, but to do so, a catalyst is needed, either an item or a plant/life seed, or bones of a creature long since passed.**

Tsukumogami. When an item reaches its 100th birthday, or has absorbed so much emotion from its owner or creator, it begins to have a sense of self. It sees. It listens. It begins to think, and yet it remains stationary, silent. And eventually, when it begins to feel, begins to want, to dream, to aspire...it departs from its inanimate shape, and takes on a humanoid form. Sometimes, it lingers with its owner or its surroundings for a small while, unseen by any, until it departs, finding its way into the Lost Village.

Henge. Have you ever noticed a cat watching you from above, as if reading straight into your thoughts and actions? Or perhaps a fox that wanders into your yard every morning, just watching you, abnormally curious and unafraid. These animals are unlike normal animals of their kind. They have lived much longer, and are much, much wiser. They surpass their bestial instincts and seek wisdom, wishes, and dreams. When they become close to mastering their magic to transform into a human, they begin to speak, to sing, even in their animal shape.

Kodama. Sacred nature spirits who are born from the forest into plants, trees, and other aspects of nature. The plant they are in is what sustains and grows them until they are ready to change out of it. It is said that to destroy or harm a sacred plant, tree, or other known sanctuary of a Kodama, is to invite despair and misfortune into your life, and possibly death. Their "life seeds" are generally surrounded by ghostly butterflies, fireflies, or hitodama (Spirit fire), and it is not unheard of for the Kodama to manifest itself to peek out of its seed, peering at the world around.

Life.

Generally, Yokai live for about 300 years, minus their time spent as an item, plant or animal. They rarely have an infant stage, but do have child-like years in which they are bumbling around, causing disaster and breaking things that aren't meant to be breakable. Around 100 years is when they come to maturity. **You are not required to RP the yokai as a child, but may write about their childhood if you wish.**

Yokai generally live in the same fashion, no matter where they originate from. They eat, they sleep, but they cannot die of starvation, thirst, or exhaustion, but they can feel the pains associated with them. It is not unheard of Yokai choosing to consume human flesh or blood in order to sustain themselves, though most seem to have lost their appetite for this.

Occasionally, a Yokai might choose to leave the Lost Village and travel into the human realm. Sometimes they go to make particular trades for human goods, some to cause trouble, and others sometimes like to just observe. Yokai are unseen by most humans unless they wish to be seen, the exceptions being sometimes children, or people with high qualities of senses, especially those with the sixth sense. It is not unheard of for a Yokai to venture out of the Lost Village and return later with a human it had become infatuated with, that it had spirited away with it, often times against the human's will.

Death.

Even spirits die, even gods. Nothing is forever, except the things we do, and the memories we make.

Yokai cannot die from things that a normal human can, such as starvation, sickness, exhaustion, thirst, or pain. They can feel the effects of these, but cannot be killed by them. However, there are ways a Yokai can be killed, or die.

Exorcisms by a large group or even just one very apt priest or monk can permanently harm or kill a Yokai. Blessed items by these holy figures or healers can disarm a Yokai if they are harmed with it, or slowly kill them. Only another holy person can reverse the effects, or heal the Yokai.

Another item which can kill a Yokai is the item from which they were born. If it is used as a weapon against them, it will kill them. This only works with items that survive time. A cake will not kill a Yokai birthed from it. This type of death only works with Tsukumogami.

Possession sickness is also one of the more worrying things for a Yokai. Earthbound, scattered souls tend to want to attach themselves into the Yokai, to continue existing, and try to take their form as theirs. Small cases of this sickness can be fought off with certain spells or potion by Yokai witches, but stronger cases can result in the Yokai's spirit being torn apart, and it will succumb to death, or become a Remnant, a horrible creature akin to undead monsters in human lore, which must be slain immediately through means of exorcism.

MURDER. A yokai can kill another yokai.

Bakemono.

Every Yokai has magic in them. The type of magic, of course, depends on the type of Yokai, and how they perceive themselves and the world. When a Yokai becomes a Bakemono, its form changes, playing emphasis on its features of magic. A yokai who has reached this state gains reverence and respect from its fellows. It can change into this state at will, just as how a Henge can change to and from an animal at will.

Kamui (The Ainu word for Kami, or gods/divine spirits.
While they're revered and more powerful than Yokai,
they aren't invincible or immune to anything in particular.
They are just made of a different substance and play a
different role.)

Birth.

The Kamui are born from the memories the world holds of them. They are born as they are, and do not remember things from their past existences, only particular feelings.

Life.

Kamui often choose to reside amongst Yokai, and live as they do. Their connections and everyday actions unfold more knowledge of themselves. Some Kamui may try to govern particular Yokai, or even humans, demanding sacrifice. A Kamui's strength can increase with the sacrifice of life to it, if they ingest the life source of the victim. However, most Kamui do not partake in this any longer, but there are some who delight in it.

Death.

Kamui can live for up to 500 years, before they slip into an equally long slumber. They can be killed only by divine weapons or objects, but a Kamui will always return in one shape or another.
