It's a quiet time in the Gaian Mercenary League. No wars, no megalomaniacs attempting to ressurect the dead gods of the past, no major corporations attempting to create zombies and take over the planet. It's been rather quiet, and the League has settled in for a very well-deserved rest.

The tiny base, nestled in the hills and plains of Beyon, is isolated and heavily guarded. But everything has its weaknesses. Every weapon has the same weakness: its wielder. Every person has a weakness: their bodies and minds. Every base has its weakness: its technology. And that is where the League is struck.

As Gear performs the usual updates to the security systems in the League's computer network, something goes wrong. A virus strikes the network, and anyone in the base touching a device connected to LeagueNet, the League's computer information network, suddenly falls in a pile to the floor. Their bodies are still breathing, but there is a significant absence of thought; their minds are digitized and placed in an artificial physical form inside LeagueNet.

It is up to the Mercenaries to escape intact as viruses and other hazards plague the net in an attempt to destroy the minds of the League members that have been victimized already. Will you escape in one piece, or will you simply become part of the system?

RP Info you might want to know:

This RP came to me as a result of finding one of my favorite computer games of all time, Operation: Inner Space. As a result of that (and my weird method of combining anything and everything into an RP), the scenario and gameplay of this RP will combine elements from Operation: Inner Space, Fallout 3, Carmen Sandiego games, Quantum Leap, Myst, and Digimon (though there will be no overt elements from the latter, simply operating off the theories of the effects of computer networks taking on a physical form).

The characters involved will be your Mercenary League character, so you had best have that character posted in the Profile Reference thread. Your introductory post will have your character awakening in what appears to be the hills of Beyon, out in the middle of nowhere. You see the base, but upon attempting to approach it, a massive force field blocks your way. You can not see any other Mercenaries, even though you are all seeing the same scenario. You are not in the same place as the others, you can not see, hear, touch, smell, taste (why?!) or communicate with them in any way. Your weapons are fully functioning and are all with you, however you have no working communication devices.

Gear is not going to be directly in this RP. He was not sucked into the computer as you were, but will act as your adviser throughout the RP, with the help of the League's recordkeeper, Archive. You will be fighting through the League's history, and against some innovative inventions of R&D that never got off paper. You will be required to solve puzzles and move from place to place. You must keep your wits about you as you travel.

If you can make it from your current location, through LeagueNet all the way to the imaging chamber, you have a chance of escaping.

Good luck.

Gear sat up, moaning as the splitting headache began to rob him of clarity. His vision was fuzzy, and he was seeing static in his eyes as his brain and visor both attempted to reboot. Standing slowly, he removed his helmet, leaving his visor in place as he rubbed his skull, attempting to alleviate some of the pain. He quickly slapped a patch on his arm from one of his belt pouches, and the pain immediately stopped. Shaking his head, he blinked several times and looked around. The power was out in R&D. Whatever had just happened had hit pretty damn hard.

The power returned, and systems began to reboot. Once loaded, he ran a quick scan to find out what happened. As he read though the files, he noticed some lines of code that seemed out of place. He reached for the touch-screen tabletop and enlarged some of the windows, proceeding to "toss" them up on to the bigger screen in front of them to read.

That particular line of code looked familiar for a reason. It was a biometric reading. Specifically brain waves.

Panic washed over the Command Sergeant Major as he began to violently shift windows around looking for anything that would disprove his current theory. Nothing.

Panicking, he quickly put his helmet back on. With a large number of League members suddenly trapped in LeagueNet, he had to find a way to get them out. The only reason he managed to stay on physical turf was because of his helmet disrupting whatever psionic attack was used to trap everyone in the first place.

He tried to establish contact, but no one could hear him. He needed a way to get through...

The imaging chamber.

That was it! If he calibrated it properly, he could appear as a hologram to whoever was trapped in LeagueNet and use that to guide them out. Assuming he could find a way out. Gear ran quickly over to the imaging chamber, which was a massive room that could project arbitrary holograms inside. That way, he could see everything the LeagueNet prisoners were seeing, even though he wasn't actually there. He could even walk around like they could, only he'd be able to pass through solid objects. It was the only way. He opened up a panel, pulled out some wire strippers, and got started.

Xeg had his eyepiece on, connected directly to the League's mainframe, skimming through the news. He never tired of current events, and with the League's technology he could be abreast of everything going on in the continent. He was in the middle of reading about an archaeological find on the eastern part of the continent, something relevant to his research, when something seemed to sap his strength away from him, and he fell unconscious onto the table, face-first into a bowl of stew.

As he woke up, what seemed like hours later, he felt something was immediately wrong. He was on the grass. What happened to his room inside his CHU? He slowly sat up, and found that he was also decked out in his wargear. Two swords at his waist, pistol on his belt, and a full magical repertoire of spells at his command. His eyepiece was also present, but he couldn't yet tell whether it was in a functioning condition.

Turning to observe his surroundings, he noticed that he was in the Radernok hills surrounding the League complex. The League itself was visible to him, he could see it down below. Just beyond it, the River Lanass weaved through the hills slowly, continuing it's ever-flowing path to the ocean. Okay, so I am outside of the League, to the east, wearing all my weapons and armor, and I appear to be alone. I swear to god that if this is some sort of joke and I wake up and find myself in that fancy-shmancy holodeck room I am going to club somebody.

Tapping his eyepiece once on the ear button to supposedly turn it on, Xeg spoke into the Mic. "Hello, this is Xeg of the Gaian Mercenary League, seeking explanation for why the hell I'm out in the hills." As an afterthought, he added, "Over."

Mugan Von Hellscream

It had all happened so fast, Mugan was simply scanning his newest seal design into his seal archive when in an instant all went black.

When he opened his eyes he was gazing up at the morning sky. "Huh?" He could feel the grass beneath him and he rose to a sitting position. "What happened?" He mumbled looking about. His eyes widened slightly noticing he was outside the League Compound and was a distance away.

His eyes narrowed and with a shake of his head he looked down. His eyes widened once again noticing he was in his combat uniform. "What the hell?"

Further investigation revealed he was also armed, heavily armed. His bag was full to the brim and he had no doubt his seals were also as packed as possible.

With a grunt he got to his feet and gazed around. He then noticed his eyepiece was on his head and he reached for the com button. "This is GML Private Mugan, I'd like to request the names of the idiots who thought it was funny to dump me in the hills... Over."

Mugan then crossed his arms and waited.

GM: There is no response on your comm links. No static, nothing to indicate the device is even functioning. And Mugen, I promise I'm not ignoring your post, but the way the RP is set up, I can't respond to everyone at once. I'll get to you next, I promise.

The modifications were complete, for the most part. The big problem would be that only Gear would be able to be seen by the trapped mercenaries; no one else would be visible without the use of Gear's unique cyberpathic signature. So unique, in fact, that it was more reliable than DNA. He was the only one who could guide the group out of the computer. If he could even do that much.

Gear exited the deactivated imaging chamber and returned to the touch panel computer. He shifted some windows and found that the computer had so far located two League members. Crap, one of them was Xeg. This was going to be fun to explain. Either way, Gear decided to start with him, considering he was the highest ranked in the system, and he could only pray that it would stay that way. The moment Wielder ended up in LeagueNet, they were all in trouble.

Gear expanded the window that was locked in on Xeg and threw it up onto the main screen. He was asking for information over his eyepiece, but there wasn't going to be a response. Now was the time. Gear grabbed a small remote from a side table and walked into the imaging chamber. He set the coordinates, and the blue-walled room began to waiver and shift until he saw a perfect image of the plains in front of him, overlooking the League base. Xeg was standing with his back to Gear, unaware that Gear had just spontaneously appeared. "That's not going to do you any good," he said quickly. He took some slight amusement value from this; if Xeg freaked and tried to attack, everything he did would pass right through Gear, as he was simply a holographic illusion.

Xeg jumped, visibly startled as Gear's voice came in loud and clear, as if he was standing right next him. He tapped his eyepiece again, still not receiving any visual input from his surroundings. Spinning around once, he saw Gear, and realized that the man was standing right next to him. He jumped again, next expecting Gear to suddenly pop up out of nowhere like that. It must have been some new teleportation trick he learned. Clapping his hands in delight, he walked over to Gear and tried to clap him on the shoulder, to express his gratitude that the Gear was here. However, his hand passed straight through him, and Xeg frowned when he realized that the image of Gear was merely a hologram.

"While I am sure that this must be very funny to everyone to see me in this predicament, right now I believe my face is currently buried in a bowl of beef stew in the real world and I would very much like to, how did it go, "Get back to Kansas now?' Please switch off whatever device it was that jolted me out of my body through the League's Eyepiece."

"Okay, guys, please try to follow," Gear said as he appeared in front of Mugen, too. Both could see him, but they could not see each other. "I'm talking to two of you now, though you can't see each other; Private Mugen and you, Xeg, so please listen closely." He sighed, not liking this. "This isn't a game, it's not a prank. Our system was hit by a virus that digitized your mind and placed it in LeagueNet. I can't get you out unless you navigate the system yourself. The only thing I can do is guide you in this holographic state. Your weapons should be intact, but the eyepieces won't work because they don't operate on LeagueNet, like your technically simulated weapons do. Any questions so far?"

Dredge had been entering the 20-digit lock on his room door when he had been struck by the jolt, he was in darkness for a brief second and fought to keep it around longer, because if Dredge knew that if he was in a realm of darkness he could easily get back home, but to no avail the darkness soon pulled away and Dredge found himself standing in the hills near the merc guild. Assuming he had blacked out and wandered out here he began his way back to the guild. He talked to himself trying to get a response from the demon in his arm along the way. "You better not have anything to do with this, because if you do I'll kill you dead." He didn't get a response and assumed that the demon merely didn't want to talk back.

Dredge was appraoching the league when his foot collided with the barrier and Dredge looked curiously at the the spot where his foot had stopped, "Well, Well, Well, What's this now?" Dredge said and began throwing everything he had at the barrier to no avail. the ground around him had transformed into a wasteland and he stood in a deep crater with smoke rising from around him. "What indeed..." Dredge said.
