(Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong forum.) So. Basically, for Nanowrimo, I'm possibly writing a story with myself as the main character, which means that my siblings and parents are also in it, being as it's pretty much writing about a true event. My mom gave me the idea, and is now incredibly supportive and really wants me to write it. However. I do not want to write it, because I don't want backlash if I write one of my family members wrong, and I know that it'll happen.

At the same time, I don't have a story idea that would be easier, and I don't want to upset my mom by rejecting her idea (which I already put into the Nano site as my official story). What should I do?

Tell her biographies are against the rules. ninja

I don't think it's true, but...

xD Unfortunately, that won't work. It's not against the rules, and my mom knows it- a part of the whole 'supportive' thing is to go onto the site and see what it's all about. It would have been a nice try, though.

Ah well. In that case, just be honest. She might be disappointed, but she'll probably understand - tell her you don't want to upset anyone by writing them wrong, but at the same time you really want her to read your story. If you wrote the biography, you'd be too nervous to share it with anyone. You may still write her idea in the future but at the moment you have another idea you'd like to work on.

If you're worried about writing them wrong, then write a fictional biography. Have the characters inspired by truth, but don't have them copies of your siblings. Besides, writing them how you see them is part of the fun of a biography. It doesn't have to be how they think they are, just how you think they are.

@Sanguina: So just be tactful with it, but tell her? If it's comes to it, then that sounds like the best solution at this time. Thanks!

@Candied: With my mom, it's gotten to the point that I can't do that. She's writing the novel through me- suggests the names, what the chapters should be. It's almost like she's the one writing it, and not me. If I tell her to let me do it, then she gets offended (and my mom's not a person that you want to offend.). That was what I tried at first, but it's not working with her.

Then make sure she knows she cant' control this. It's your NaNo, you can do what you want. I suggest telling her that while you want her support, you need to be able to do your own thing, or there's no point in even attempting NaNo.

So you're saying to just talk to her, right? I guess that's the best thing to do, and if she doesn't listen, then just change to a different idea. Then here it goes. xD Thanks a bunch!

Hopefully talking with her does the trick. The main thing is to break it to her gently but firmly to keep from everything breaking into chaos.

It's your nano, so it's your choice. You can either write it later or suggest that maybe she could do that for her own Nano this year. You can support each other that way and talk things like other plot ideas and future ideas with her, as well. And you'll be able to keep each other's word count on track, as well. smile

How did it go?
PostPosted: Fri Oct 29, 2010 4:29 pm

I just talked to her, and asked her to let me do my thing for this Nano. I didn't tell her that I was going to switch to something else, but I told her to not ask about it, and not tell me what to write unless I ask for help. Surprisingly, she was happy that I asked her not to, and agreed. I'm a little confused, but hey, it worked out great.

Thanks for the help! I had no clue that it'd be so simple. whee Thanks!!

xd I reckon most things like this are never as hard as we imagine. Maybe she's excited for you, and excited to have a surprise at the end when she gets to read it. If I was your mother, I guess I'd be happy that you were dedicated to expressing yourself and getting your own ideas down.

Tell her to write it? It can be a family thing--FaNaNoWriMo (Family NANo xD)

Sounds like my situation. My stepfather randomly decide to do it. I'm excited, and, kind of horrified.
