Can't Read My Poker Face:
Lady Gaga Tutorial

Sorry for the crappy webcam pics in advance...

User Image

Since Lady Gaga entered the scene, the only thing more distinct than her music is her style. This tutorial is replicating the infamous Lightning Bolt mask and makeup as worn in the video for Poker Face.

I think the quintessential Gaga look is one that is unique, DIY, and personal, so all of this is just my interpretation. The only keys to the look are a lightning bolt shape on the face and a shimmery, silver smokey eye. Her eye makeup has a distinct blue finish, as blue is the primary accent color in the video, so my version begins with a wash of a bright, vibrant turquoise that serves as an undertone to the silver. Other than the eyes and mask, the rest of the look is flawless and nude to the extreme.

This look is actually quite versatile. Obviously it is perfect for Halloween, which is when I wore it, but the eye makeup technique is perfect for New Years, Christmas, or the club. The undertone color can be changed to create an entirely different look. (changing it to purple makes dark brown eyes look amazing) The mask technique can obviously be done in any shape.

Hope you enjoy this look! Have fun with it. smile

Pictures coming soon! (probably tomorrow, will update first post when they're linked)

Products I Used
links all lead to product websites

It is by no means necessary to use the same brands and shades that I did. I used products that I think work very well and that I had experience with. Some products are duplicated, I listed them in each category if I used it in that area. I love multifunctional products. xp

Face
Covergirl TruBlend Mineral Powder Foundation in Soft Honey [X]
Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer/Highlighter Perfecting Duo in Medium [X]
Covergirl Clean Pressed Powder in Soft Honey [X]
NYC Face Mosaic in Bronze Glow [X] (this is garbage, use a better quality bronzer.)
Maybelline Pearl Lipstick in Coral Glow [X]

Bolt Mask
NYC Retractable Kohl Liner in Plum Perfect (for outline) [X]
Cream Makeup/Facepaint in White (purchased at Walmart in the costume aisle, you can also get this from Hot Topic and Gothic specialty stores/sites. A face makeup primer would probably work too, or maybe even a shadow primer.)
Hot Topic Eyeshadow Palette in Sour (yellow color) [X]
Covergirl Eye Shadow Trio in Dazzling Metallics (gold color) [X]
NYC Liquid Eyeliner in Black [X] (for outline; a metallic gold or silver would work too if you have it)

Eyes
(eyeshadow primer... I used an old crappy concealer, but use any primer)
Hot Topic Eye Shadow Palette in Sour (turquoise colors) [X]
jane Eye Shadow Quad in Chicago [X]
wet n wild Illuminating Palette in Paradise Cove (any white or pale purple highlighting color and neutral tan highlighting/blending color)
NYC Liquid Eyeliner in Black [X]
jane BePure Mineral Liner Pencil in Ink Mica [X]
Almay Bright Eyes Liner/Highlighter Pencil in Medium (champagne color) [X]
L'Oreal Bare Naturals Mascara in Black

Tools
Triangular makeup sponge
Ecotools Retractable Kabuki Brush (foundation and powder)
Eyelash curler
Equate Double-Ended Shadow Brush (any flat eye shadow brush)
Equate Angled Liner Brush
(optional: crease brush. I didn't use one, but if that's your thing, rock on)
Essence of Beauty Angled Blush Brush
Small Paintbrush (optional, but good for the bolt if you don't want to use your fingers)
Lash glue (optional)

Step One: The Base

If using liquid foundation, apply with a sponge and buff to an airbrushed finish, then freehand the lightning bolt on your face in a forgiving brown or purple kohl pencil. (I used NYC's retractable) Do not get powder in the bolt, make sure to go around it. If using powder foundation, draw on the bolt first, then apply foundation on it, again being careful not to get it in your outline. Conceal, highlight, etc. You want a flawless finish. I apply concealer under my eyes and around my nose, and then the highligher on my cheekbones, cupid's bow, dotted on the forehead, and on the bridge of my nose. Set this with powder, again avoiding the bolt area.

Apply smokey eye and bolt mask as in the other posts. You can make your own mask out of a piece of gold cardstock or tin foil, and glue it onto your face with lash glue, or do it with makeup as I did.

Apply bronzer under your cheekbones, avoiding the makeup mask, under the jawline, around your forehead, etc. Cover your lips with liquid concealer, and then dab on a tiny amount of pink or pale coral lipstick with your fingers. You want very sheer lips with a tiny pop of color.

Step Two: Shimmery Smokey Eye

pictures soon... taking them tomorrow smile

Lids
1. Prime lids.
2. Apply a pale turquoise color all over your lids, to slightly above the crease. This will be the undertone to the silver.
3. Apply a medium shimmery silver on top of the turquoise.
4. Apply a darker silver/gray in the outer corners and hollows of your eye, stopping about 2/3 of the way in.
5. Apply a forgiving black or very dark gray in the outer corners. Fan/smoke the darker colors out.
6. Blend all these colors together.
7. Apply a neutral, shimmery highlight under your brow and blend it along the top line of the shadow to smooth it out.
8. Apply a white or pale purple in the inner corner as highlight.
9. Apply a super shimmery pale silver on the ball of your eye. This will make it pop.

Apply glitter if you'd like a little more shimmer, then move on to liner:
1. With an angled brush, line the outer half of your lower eye with the dark gray.
2. Line the inner half with the turquoise color.
3. Run the shimmery silver on top of the turquoise and into the dark gray, about two thirds of the way out.
4. Tightline your eyes with black or blackened blue, and line the outer two thirds of your waterline with it.
5. Line your inner waterline with a white or champagne color so your eyes don't look too close-set or tired. (optional, but recommended...)
6. Line your upper eyes with black, liquid liner. Taper out into a slight cat eye if desired.
7. Apply false lashes if you wish (I didn't), then curl lashes and apply black mascara.

Step Three: Lightning Bolt Mask

1. Fill in your outline with white facepaint or a pale primer using a paintbrush or your fingers. Blend out streak marks as you go with a makeup sponge.
2. Outline your new mask in black, silver, or gold liquid eyeliner. (I used black, but a gold metallic would be so awesome)
3. Using a yellow (or any color you want) eyeshadow and a brush, fill in the white area. The white paint acts both as a primer and to really make the color pop. This will be the undertone.
4. Then, using a shimmery gold shadow (or again, any color that compliments the first), apply on top of the undertone color.
5. Taking the same shimmery gray from the eye, run it along the inner edge of the liner, blending the gold into the edge.
Optional; create the "bolts" she has in her mask:
6. Dip a Q-tip in a tiny amount of lash glue, and then in a dark grey. (you might want to scrape some into another dish if using pressed) Dab this onto each point.
OR, you can use some face gems or child's stick-on earrings. Or even a shimmery eyeliner.

This look is all about creativity, so there's no need to use these exact colors. This base can be used for pretty much any color combination; it would look awesome in silver instead of gold, or even in rainbow colors. It's all about building pigments on top of a sturdy base to get a perfect blend of color and shimmer.
