I forget exactly what it was I was looking for when I stumbled upon this university's study of the English language, as pronounced by speakers from around the world. I think it's an awesome find, myself, though <3. Simply browse by person/language, select that language, and you'll get samples of those speakers. They all read from the same paragraph and there's transcriptions and summarizations of their accents. The voices recorded vary from intriguing, to ear-rapingly obnoxious. http://classweb.gmu.edu/accent I know that this probably doesn't go into the Dialect section... Since it's accents, not dialects. But it...Didn't go anywhere else either, in my opinion. But, Spanishnerd, Punkpassion and Proudly, if you wanna move it somewhere feel free. And secondarily I dont think this link has been posted in the FLG so I dont' know the utter futility of my post. So if it is already posted then just inform me so I can delete it, or, delete it alltogether.

Well in my opinion, accents are the cause of different dialects. You speak it a different way, and all that.

Swedish people speaking English, oh, I hate it. heart Of course, there are people in Sweden who can speak English as it was their mother language, with absolutley no accent at all.

I think Asian English sounds funny. I watched Memoirs of a Geisha last weekend in English and it was like Asian English all the time. It's a nice movie though.

spanishnerd99 Well in my opinion, accents are the cause of different dialects. You speak it a different way, and all that. I think that that is part of it, but don't forget different social situations as well. Especially in idomatic terms, If I was to use the word SCRUM, as in the media Scrum, I am not sure that people from non-rugby countries would understand. the term lucked out, has opposite meanings in Australian and America. You get the idea.

Sluvotsky You don't know how much fun I have speaking with accents, that site is such a help. xd XD I do that too. Except now I do it so much that I'll slip into an accent when I don't intend to... >.>... It's crazy just how much English varies in the U.S. according to region. Although, I do live in Minnesota (though I'm not originally from Minnesota), and people don't talk here like everybody thinks they do. Only the old people have ridiculous accents. And perhaps the northern Minnesotans. But I couldn't say for sure. >.>

Ohmygosh>_< The Minnesotan people on that thing sound... so... FREaKIn' MinNEsOTAn. I mean. Stereotypical. Like, they sound dumb. I don't think I talk like that though. I hope I don't talk like that >_>. I'm pretty sure I don't. As far as I can tell, I still sound like I'm from the East Coast.
