The other day, I realized I was only doseing my 20 gallon at a 1/2 dose for fin rot. I decided I was gunna use the two "extra" packets and dose for 7 days instead of 5, and hope for the best. Though, I kinda figure, the tank only has about 12 gallons of water total (the river rock gravel takes up ALOT of space, and theres 5 extra pounds of it anyway, as they only had 25 pound bags when I got it), and the medication (Maracyn 2) says 2 packets per 10 gallons the 1st day, and 1 per 10 gallons the rest of the days, and I have been doing everything in halves. I also added 1 TBS per 5 gallons of aquarium salt... So do you think my plan is ok? Their fins seem to be healing up just fine...

I don't medicate for fin rot. Clean water and salt fixes that perfectly. Save the meds for something serious. Maracyn is good stuff to have on hand, but meds should always be the last resort. Like right now my neighbor is battling ich, we're doing salt treatment only. I'm keeping an eye on the situation though and if it doesn't start to get better I'm gonna bring some medicine over for her.

I tried for about 2 weeks with the 1st infected fish (mouth rot, long story...), then the males ripped up each other fins so I had to add two more fish to the 3 gallon (thats where I had the other one), and I did 100% water changes every day on it, but when another one of my male Guppies started showing signs of it, I gave up on the 3 gallon and put every one back in the 20 gallon and used medication, and then was so freeking over-tired (it was pretty late when I went to pick up the meds) that I misread the directions, and never even thought to re-read them the second dose (I usually do, just to be sure I'm doing right), so they have been being treated for about 4 days, I think, like this.

Vanilla eXee How long has this been going on?About 3 weeks now. Maybe a bit less, since I have no concept of time lol I'm on the last packet of meds today. Unless someone tells me otherwise, I'm gunna go back to water changes and salt...

Yeah. Thats such a stupid freeking mistake though. I cant believe I actually did that! I'm so OCD about meds to make sure I do them right. Like with my WST, I know how much I need to use for the 20 gallon when I use it, but I always check it and I always make sure I have the right measuring spoon when I take it out and right before I start to measure it. Maybe I should sleep more....

It happens. At least you didn't double the proper dose and kill them all! I don't use measuring spoons and all, I bake A LOT and I've gotten to the point where I can measure with my palm.

I probably could, but I dont really like to estimate, unless it makes it better (like certain foods lol). Estimating when it comes to anything about my fish (except their food... lol) just doesnt feel right >.<

Yeah dude, gotta do what makes you feel comfortable. If I was using something strong like a medication, I'd probably use the provided measure. But when I salt, there's no need to run downstairs and grab a measuring cup.

Much easier, and I always know where it is (my room eats things >.<)

my whole house eats everything. Whenever I'm baking I can never find my measuring cups and I had to learn to measure without spoons because those disappeared long ago.

Everything you dont need, in the way so that you cant find what you do need XD BTW, back on topic lol, I did a huuuuge water change on the 20 gallon, and so far it seems to have helped. I will do another one tomorrow, or monday, and hopefully, I wont have to buy new meds >.<
