Real Reason: Yuichi never liked being with the crowd. No, it just wasn't in him to dive into the education system and get a normal job. His dad wanted him to work in an office, like, do some real important work in accounting or insurance or something. Now, why in Shinigami-sama's name would he want that? Yuichi wanted to go places, do something meaningful, maybe feel like a (real) contributing member of society by helping people. When he told his father about going to Shibusen, he had looked at him as if he was crazy. Yuichi avoided general education in the public school system as best he could, and now he wanted to go to an academy? Dad was proud for about five minutes...before he learned what Shibusen was. Oh, of course he then just had to tell little Yui's dear mama to talk some "sense" into him. Big fight happens, "where did we go wrong?"'s are tossed around, his father calls him a selfish contrarian because he was abandoning one form of education for another, blah blah blah, yadda yadda, so on and so forth...
...So, Yuichi ran away. Boy, his parents were probably pissed off for a good time after that! Yuichi can't find it in him to be too worried, though. If they cared about him, after all, they'd respect his decision and accept it in due time. If they didn't...well, screw them, right? He headed to Shibusen, brimming with confidence and carrying a sack of cash he'd stolen from his parents to get him to that place calling him allll the way in Nevada. Yes, he got lost a few times, but that was all part of the adventure, right? Also part of the adventure was not having that much formal training to go on, apart from the private bokken (yes, bokken, not even a sword) training and a few 15-minute workout sessions a week to go on.

What he does like most of the time, though, is stargazing. It's a lazy activity, and he never loses interest because with so many wonderous things in the sky, he'd consider it odd to do so.
