I guess things are better than they were in the fifties! But in some ancient cultures, the mentally ill were considered to be much honored shamans! Heh, it's a living! razz

I think it's much better now, though there are still problems with the treatment of the mentally ill. In the past people probably thought people were cursed, posessed, or as Alex said, sacred and powerful! I can imagine mentally ill people had some fun in ancient times, being worshipped for their insanity! xd

Yes, considering the sacred honor that some mentally-ill people had as Shamans in the past, it's odd that negative stigmas carry over to modern Shamanic religions. I was actually kicked out of a Coven because they were afraid that my mental-illness might make it hard for me to properly perform Shamanic practices. Curious, seeing as how some ancient peoples thought the mentally-ill were better qualified for such pursuits!

The priminister of my country actually had a nervese breakdown... he tolerance got much better after that. Its really good what happening with the system now. Its still far from good, but they work on it. But still I have to wait for mounds to get help since I dont want to kill myselfe...

That's a rough compromise. I hope that you are able to get help soon!

The stigma is still there, but instead of sticking us in a room and shocking us, spinning us around blinfolded, sicking our heads in cages with rats, beating us, or the like, they stick us in a hospital until we're "better," meaning we fess up to everything in our heads.

Good point. The hospital system, far from "fixing" our problems, just teaches many of us how to avoid looking like we have to be fixed. We suffer in silence with the same stigma as when we were treated like animals in the past.

People refuse to see the similarities, and condemn the anomaly. Human nature.

You know what I've noticed? People want to be crazy. But, why? With all the stigma that goes around it, why would any person want to be crazy? Being "mentally handicapped" gets you no more attention than if you spoke loud all the time, or wore a purple hat, or had fluffy hair, or had a tattoo on your forehead. It's hard.

That's a good point. I think people have fun playing around with some stigmas, especially if they know they can escape that stigma and never have to deal with it again. Some people find it fun to be alienated and persecuted for a short period of time... As long as they can stop whenever they feel like it.

I just don't like those people. The stigma stays with those truly suffering. What kind of person mocks others' suffering?

people are probably a lot more aware about mental illness nowadays.
but i still feel a stigma. I am always really self conscious of it, I feel like people won't like me if they realize how messed up I am in the head. It happens to me a lot, so I only can be my true self around those I really trust. I think a lot of people are scared or annoyed by mental illness.

People think mental illness/disorder/etc. are more extreme than many can become i.e. severe injury caused by severe handwashing OCD, really bad rocking, etc.

They're in for a shock when they meet ADD and mid-high functioning autistics. And that's the thing, because people, especially those from the "Mental Hospital, now! *jail door SLAM*" generation haven't had that much experience as ours when dealing with/knowing about people with MI's. It's wearing off... slowly...

I just hate how you have the slightet bit of anxiety or stress and they think you need pills. No one knows exactly what those pills do anyway.
