I'm hatching some Brine Shrimp for my new arrivals in quarantine, so I'm going to take this time to make an easy to follow log/guide for other people who want to raise brine shrimp, but find it too confusing or whatever.

Day 1:

Took 2 plastic water bottles. Cut the tops off at the 3rd-4th indent, then turned the tops upside down and stuck them into the bottoms. My mom came in my room and got mad because she thought I was making bongs. So if you live at home, make sure to let your parents know what you're doing ahead of time!

I filled the bottles both up with untreated tap water. Added about half a teaspoon of aquarium salt to each container and 1/4 of a teaspoon of brine shrimp cysts. I'll start aerating them tomorrow morning, as I've read that it's good to let them soak in the water overnight first. I also put tinfoil on top of the containers to cut down on evaporation. The last few times I hatched brine, I didn't use an airstone, just pumped fresh air in every few hours with a turkey baster and they hatched out fine.

When I find a light bulb, I'm going to sit the bottles in a bigger container of water and place my clamp lamp over it to heat the water. I also hope to use the bigger container to raise some of the bbs to adulthood as a better treat for my betta.

Here is the project so far:

Day 2:

Found a bulb for my lamp and added aeration. More pictures of the complete set-up:

As a side note: The neon tetras in quarantine can see the cysts floating around and they are now trying to reach them. It's cute.

Day 3:

No picture updates because I don't have cool lenses or anything, but some of the eggs have hatched. Still not a large amount and I'm hoping to get some more, but it's been sitting in my fish food box for 2 years un used to I'm not expecting an amazing hatch rate.

Sounds like fun! Keep us posted how it goes 3nodding

Just curious, did you use this as your reference?

No, but that would have been helpful. TY for the link ^_^

Update: I finally found a lightbulb. Wish I had it yesterday because the shrimpies would have already hatched. Better luck tomorrow.

We've got hatchlings!! I might have to put my plans for raising adult brine on hold though, feeding and cleaning the brine shrimp tank will probably be more than my mom can handle while I'm gone.

It's pretty simple and that's what I wanted to convey with this thread. I mean, minus writing about it and taking pictures I've probably spent 5-10 mins taking care of it in the past 3 days. The hard part is going to be trying to raise the babies into adults. The thing is, half of the guides out there say it's really hard and not worth it, while the other half say it's easy as pie, so we'll see.

I have a quick question; Why do you have to use untreated tap water for this? I have been trying to figure it out, but I have no idea lol

I personally don't think it matters either way, but my thinking is that the chlorine in the tap water helps the eggs hatch. People use bleach to decapsulate their brine shrimp eggs and they still hatch, so it's not like it's gonna hurt them.

Gotta keep this project on hold for about another month or so. In feb I can start everything back up and by that time I may also be closer to breeding plecos.

Bristlenose. I'm going to get a longfin albino female and see what I get, then go from there to focus on one thing.
