Hi everyone, I'm somewhat new here, but I was just wondering:

Almost every night I try, but cant fall asleep untill almost three in the morining. I lay down at ten with all the lights and TV off, but its no use. I've tried meditating, and drinking decafinated Tea, but nothing seems to work for more then a week. I almost fell asleep in science class today, and realized that this has got to stop.
Does anyone know of something easy to get to that would calm me down and cure this sleep issue? I have a karate tournament on saturday that I have to be up a 5am for and I cant survive on this much sleep ammount longer. confused

don't drink caffiene, chocolate has caffiene. Even in the morning, when you are tired. caffiene stays in the system up to 16 hours

What happends when your trying to sleep?

There is this tea you can by from celetial seasonings that is sleepy time tea.

Is there stress in your life?

kava-kava i would suggest you trying it out before your tournament. Vallieran root and chamomile tea could help. but Valieran root might make you drousy in the morning..
There are others

if your mind is racing and you cant get to sleep
you can use:
skullcap valerian or chamomile and linden flowers will help.

or skullcap and vervain could be a calmative without a sedative effect.

You would wand to use 1 1/2 teaspoon of each plant and make a water infusion. [tea] let it steap for 10 minutes.

But if you dont know where to get all of that above

the celestia season tea works really well.

oh and you could put lavender in your pillow, it could help with a calming effect

Wow. Mech, that's a lot! ^_^ Very nice!

I use a pillow made with hops, which has a sedating effect. Also, try winding down your day around six in the evening- take a warm bath (to which you can also add oatmeal- it's not neccessarily calming but it's comfortable, which helps you relax.
The SleepyTime Tea is really good, I have some as well- or chamomile. Avoid mints, which are stimulants.

Also, I don't know your daily schedule- but at some point in your day, get in some hard, physical labor. Go jog (Or walk, if you're fat like me whee ), get into a good sparring match, shadow-spar outside, do situps and pushups- work yourself into a sweat. Casual meandering walks, while soothing, aren't what you need to do. Just remember to leave yourself several hours for your body to calm down before bed. A walk first thing in the morning or a gym class or aerobics class during the day is a good option. If your body isn't tired, it will interfere with your mind's rest.

Also, try to keep your mind stimulated- the same way as your body can interfere with your mind, your mind can interfere with your body. If you're in school, then you're probably alright- if not, then make it a point during the day to do something that isn't mindless.

Avoid TV for an hour before bed- do something calming and routine, like a yoga workout or some gentle, non-vigorous stretching or meditation.

Try sipping a calming tea before bed and reflecting on and putting your day aside- don't let the day's worries stress you out at night. Don't worry about getting to sleep, either. Focus on relaxing your body- counting sheep works by lulling the brain into a relaxed state. Do this simple exercise: get into bed and lay flat on your back. Starting at your toes, tense them as tight as they'll go, and then let them relax fully. Remember to breathe into your stomach and not into your chest. Next, do your feet, then your legs, and so on up until you've tensed and relaxed every muscle in your body. Then just conciously focus on relaxing each muscle- imagine yourself a wet noodle, just limp. Be like a cat- just lounge.

Make sure you try the non-medicinal options first- get enough exercise, take the time to de-stress and relax, and try the tea. Give them a month to work- all natural remedies take time to work, and you won't find a miracle cure overnight.

If they don't work, try looking for valerian root at your local supplement store. Follow the bottle's instructions- but only use it as a last resort, because like with any sleep aid, it can mess your body up more.

And, because I am the queen of emergency OTC remedies-
Come Friday night before your tournament, at about seven pm take two Tylenol PM and go lay down. Remember to focus on relaxing your muscles and your mind- and not on sleep. The Tylenol will help you get to sleep- it's very good at that. ^_^ It eases the aches and pains of the day, takes care of stress-headaches, and gives you a small dose of something to make you drowsy. Just DO NOT USE IT unless you have something HUGE the next day... and take it early, and go to bed early, so that you're not groggy when you wake up.

Wow, thank you. We're going to go shopping tomorrow but I have access to the tea tonight ^^. The bathtub's dirty but a soothing hot shower sounds nice now. My mom's not sure about giving me the Tylenol because she says it makes her nausious. I think I will be motivated to excersise more to practice for the tourniment, instead of watching as much TV and Video games...So I think I could do with the excersise. As for the questions:
When I try to fall asleep my body is tired but my mind is racing, going from memory to memory and getting all excited or wrapped up in embarrasing or stresful memorys. Then I feel energetic and awake, and start worring about everything.

Yes, there is a lot of stress in my life. Midterms are on friday and my first detention is tomorrow, there are a lot of other factors, but those are the two main ones. I have high anxsity and that doesnt help eather.
((sorry about my bad spelling))

So just relax, you know? Focus on something else. My old martial arts instructor used to tell me that when I meditate, I should take my day like a cup of tea. Every morning, I should meditate and drink what's in my cup, emptying what I dreamed about, what I feel like, all those things- drink them all and deal with them. Then at night, do the same thing- slowly sip your "teacup" of your day, and process it enough to relax- even if it means deciding firmly that you will deal with it tomorrow.

To help ease your mind, you could also listen to low, relaxing music.
There are all kinds of CDs for it.
There is no lyrics, so nothing to focus on but the soft sound.
Just select something that you believe will be relaxing.

I listen to native music.
My friend listens to oceans.
While another listens to soft piano music.

There's a broad category, so I'm sure you could find something you like.

The music, combined with everything else suggested, could really relax you and help you fall asleep much sooner.

this thread is a bit old, but it's one that's close to my heart!

i have terrible trouble falling asleep and always have, and working shifts some weeks this means i'm getting up after only an hour or 2 asleep, so i'm interested if anyone has anything else to add to what's already been stated here 3nodding

my worst night is tomorrow night actually, going from working until 10PM one week to starting at 6AM the next, having to force myself to get up early on the Sunday so i can try to go to bed at a decent time in the evening, i often find it makes no difference though, i can go to bed before 10, and lie awake until 2.
i do drink camomile tea and a night-time blend when i can get hold of it, also hot milk in the winter, but if i'm going to lie awake it doesn't seem to matter what i try.
i am guilty of the racing mind when i'm trying to sleep, one ploy of mine when i'm trying to shut down at night is to focus on an image, i'll imagine myself somewhere, sometimes it's in a hammock between 2 trees in a garden, dappled sunlight coming through the leaves, a gentle breeze rustling the boughs, bees buzzing and me snoozing. Another is i'm curled up on a supremely comfy sofa infront of an open fire, the rain is falling against the window but i'm snug under a blanket, these can help sometimes as i'm focusing on being still and asleep somewhere else, but not always sweatdrop
it go so bad at one point that my doctor prescribed me a short course of sleeping pills, over here in England doctor's will not give you more than a 2 weeks supply of sleeping pills, because they are aware that people become dependant on them.
The first time i used them i only took half a tablet, on a Sunday night before my early shift, the effect was a bit scary, i was swaying by the time i got the the foot of my stairs, i bearly made it up to bed, but i suffered no grogginess the next day, i made those pills last for nearly a year, only taking them when i really needed them, but, even though i only had 14, they soon started to have no effect.

i always have a candle-lit bath now, at around 8/9 o'clock on a Sunday night, i have a particular product that i put in it, one of these..

a lurid looking item i know, it's a bubble bar slice from LUSH

it's aimed at kids really, a cunning device for getting over exuberant children into the bath at the end of a nerve fraying day by turning the water a gruesome colour, then knock them out with the slumber inducing fragrance. it does work though! and unlike other bubbly products it doesn't dry your skin, the bubbles are produced by bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartare so it makes the water lovely and silky, and it's laden with ylang ylang and lavender oils.
this is the best thing that i've found for easing me towards sleep, i wonder if ylang ylang is my personal little saviour then, it seems to work better than other aromatherapy fragrances that i've tried, but i'm still very open to any other suggestions that anyone else may have.

oh! It's a little off topic, but we have this stuff in a store here that turns your bathwater into like... a thick jelly type feeling stuff, it keeps the water hot for like four times longer. Then when you're done, you mix in this other powder and BOOM water again!

Balm tea, lavender scent and I think you'll sleep like never before XD
also meditation before sleeping helps.
Don't watch television, computer or other screen before going to bed. Music, not to noisy and some calm kind.
Jogging (sp?) half an hour before sleeping is also an idea. Take some fresh air and calm those brains X3
