Word choice largely depends on what type of writing your are doing formal writing, obviously, is going to be more stiff and business-like than let's say dialogue or descriptive.
So, let's break down the types shall we?
1. Formal- essays, letters to businesses, contracts, reports, school papers(not in creative writing assignments)
2. Creative writing (which can be divided down even further!
a. Dialoge - speaking, talking
b. Descriptive - describe
c. Actions - moving, doing something, working, running, fighting
d. Character's inner voice
Let's start with comparing the two big ones and which words can go were
Creative vs. Formal!
Formal - a lack of adjectives, plus you can't really use words like jumbled or pallid, etc. Most of the time when you have formal writing you really want to just get it over with, your words are blunt and straight to the point. No beating around the bush! You smack that bush right in the middle!
Creative - you have a lot more room to play here, I mean really you do! If you want humor you got some words that make pretty much everyone giggle like madmen, if you want scary you have those words that send goose bumps up your arms.
I should say however, this is not the be all end all guide to choosing words! You are the writer, you get to decide what words get to go down on that pretty little paper!(or screen, whichever you prefer)
Pen on Fire.
A writer's guild.
