I've recently been cutting my own hair as of lately because I don't trust salons >_> anyways, I was wondering, can you give off that 'choppy' layered look with just regular haircutting sheers? Like have the same effects as the razor combs so that the layers are blended and not as blunt. I'm in need to buy one, but I'm not sure when. And this question popped in my head xD
I used to cut the general outline of how I wanted my hair and left it to the salon ladies to fix it up. But I'm better off with my own hands.

I give myself a trim to make my haircut last longer. I have a pixie that I like to keep super short, and when it gets past a month, it just looks so messy. So when it starts growing over my ears and the sideburns start to lose their point, I take my brow scissors and just cut the ear out again and even out the sides, then have my gf stand behind me and trim the bottom in a straight line so it doesn't look like a mullet. mad d When it grows out again, then I go to the salon. And by salon, I mean Super Cuts.
Can you buy those razor combs? That's what they usually use on the top of my head after buzzing the back... that would save me so much $$ if I could buy one myself. Before Super Cuts I went to a cheap salon with a gay woman that would always cut my hair exactly the way I wanted it, wouldn't keep insisting that it was too short or question me, and she would razor the hell out of it. Then, when I moved I just go to the public one, which doesn't use razor combs, and it looks so different. stare So, I guess you can't get the same effect with shears?

You can -kind of- get the look, but only if you want really random choppy layers like all over the place. Before I got my razor and blending sheers, what I would do is take random small sections of hair, not the bottom layer, twirl it like, take it and twist it? Then cut diagonally down it. If you do this to your entire head you get random looking layers that are blended because theres no one straight across length. It requires some styling if you really want it to be noticeable though. I would just turn my head upside down, spray, then push up sections to make it look choppier.

I've heard of the hair twirling and cutting process, but I really just needed to know how to get the choppy look because I was trying out dragon fangs. (I got them and I absolutely love them. heart )
