I've recently decided that I want to dye my entire head red. (that rhymed...) I don't know when I'll do it, but it probably won't be soon. Anyone here with an head of bright color have any recommendations for keeping it looking, well, bright?
Also, I have naturally black hair, so I know I'll get really ugly roots haha.

I would say don't wash your hair as much and when you do use cold water. They have the shampoos for red hair to I have used John Fredda It worked well. I have also heard some people say that they put the hair color in their conditioner, but I have never personally tried that.

Use SFX, keep it on your head as looong as you possibly can and use a blow dryer while you let it sink it. Only shampoo your hair when you really need to, use color-safe shampoo/conditioner, mix some dye in with conditioner, rinse hair with vinegar, use cold water, avoid using products, and avoid using heat styling.
I've had my hair unnaturally colored for the last......8? Years? Right now I'm moderately boring because theres a few places I really want jobs at when I'm 18, so I want to apply and hopefully get the job, then color it. =[

Manic Panic is awful. Get Special Effects or if you know someone with a pro-card, Provana.

Haha, I took the"unnatural" color out of my hair too. It was blue, but now it's blonde. I go tired of the b***h that blue is to keep up.

- Wash your hair every other day, versus washing it daily. This is better for your hair, anyway. =)
- Wash with lukewarm to cool water.
- Use shampoo and conditioner made for color-treated hair; sulfate-free works best, from my personal experience. I like L'Oreal Everpure, myself.

I've been totally tricking myself into saying my hair is naturally colored now. rofl I colored it black, then faded it a loooot, and started going over it in SFX "Blood Red" So it looks just super dark red most places, but I go anywhere with decent light and its pretty bright. I just suck at having normal hair. XD

This is what I do, and my hair stays vibrant red for ages before I feel the need to re-dye it to brighten it up.
First of all, all of my hair has been henna-ed as a 'base' for the bright red. Henna gives your hair a natural looking, coppery red, which is nice, but I want a bright cherry red.
I use any of the paintbox reds (cherry bomb, red corvette, hot chili) over top of my henna, which ARE bright, true red colours. You could also use special effects or whatever you happen to be able to get. So even after a ton of washes, my hair is still bright looking because my hair still has the permanent, henna red base.
Since henna is permanent (as in it can't be bleached out or dyed over) maybe you could try a permanent red hair dye instead as a 'base' for the red.

@Quezie: Your hair is so pretty! And thanks for sharing your knowledge of awesome red hair. xD
@Everyone: Thank you so much for the all tips, but my hair dying has been pushed back until AFTER I get my Senior portrait. I'm a junior, so it's not that far, but it does mean I'll have to wait an extra 3 months. /cries. Oh well.
