Ok, since there is a lot of debate about what poetry really is, I have made a thread where you can discuss such matters. Tell everyone your view on poetry, talk about different poets, and debate which styles are more poetic, and which styles can hardly be called poetry. Please use this thread to discuss these topics, and not the "Poems! smile " thread. That thread is specifically for posting your poetry, and comments on the poems that are posted. Thank You!

Well i think poetry is inner feelings , i wouldnt want to get technical and that it come from with in and its feelings brought together , thats poetry to me .

poetry isn't just about rhyming words. If it were, there would be no soul to it. There is such a thing as free verse. You write whatever you feel and it is still a poem. There is also Haiku's they don't rhyme either. Find what works for you, it isn't about the rhymes.

actually, most hard core poets see free verse as just writing. not as true poetry.
more so since free verse also doesn't follow any set Meter, no set form, and only shares metaphor and simile in common with true poetry. it's why I say I dabble in it when people ask me.

I think that such rigid thinking like that is more of an English language thing. In different coutries all over the world there are different poetic styles and outside of the US and England most don't rhyme. Like the Haiku for example. There would be riots over there if someone said it wasn't "true" poetry. I also doubt most people would say E. E. Cummings, Stephan Crane or William Shakespeare aren't true poets. I think poetry is more of a feeling you get from the words and verses. biggrin I will say that writing in rhyme is harder than not (whenever I do, I feel it sounds childish) and that may be why some people say that is the only true poetry because there is a challenge to it. But some people just need something to set them apart from other people so they can say they are better. *shrugs* (though I am not a hard core poet or a hard core peotry fan I have read a few poets, and some of my favorite do rhyme.)

Actually, William Shakespeare is known namely as a play write, his poetry isn't as 'fascinating' as his plays. so yes, he's not considered (in English terms) as a poet. though he writes plays in poetic style, it's not poetry. but I see what you mean, that it seems to be an English thing. But actually haiku has a set style of writing, a meter as it were, and thus is poetry, Japanese poetry namely. Also, most people feel that those who call themselves poets but only write prose, are really just using the idea of poetry as a emotional outlet, or therapy.

Though quite frankly I write prose all the time, and really don't care if others think of it as 'therapy' because I love the stuff I've written (even the junk works!)
